I was there a couple of years ago. It was great! Only reason I didn't move is because lack of jobs and shrinking middle class. I'm originally from Los Angeles (uggh!..) Now I live in Denton, TX. It's artsy like Asheville but flat w/ no mountains. Exceptions have to be made. Also, we have a strong economy and middle class. I can come up w/ a months rent in week. Asheville is amazing.

Well done...and accurate. After 47 years in Michigan our family moved to North Myrtle Beach and we love it. Myrtle Beach area is a little different, (it's own animal) because people who live in Myrtle Beach for the most part aren't from here. Which can take a toll on the (Southern Hospitality thing, if you know what I mean). But spot on! Love your videos!

It's hot, and it's sticky. July- mid-September are pretty rough in SC. Best times of the year are Oct- early December, and March- May. Even the criminals are nice, unless they are on duty. Now for a well kept secret: We simply will not miss early December in SC. For instance- the plantation reenactments of Christmas' s past in the South, like in Pendleton, SC, and some other plantations.

I'm 30 minutes west of Charlotte, I know when people say stuff about southern hospitality and the people here, i'm kind of indifferent, some people are nice some not. The whole notion of southern people as nice has been diluted over the last 20 years. So much government money went into revamping the south because it was suffering so much lead to all the suburb commuters we meet everyday that aren't from the south (people go where the jobs go) so it is basically just like the rest of the US now.

That's my problem with generalizing the south; the real, broader south is too big to generalize and isn't really the sub-culture it's often portrayed. The south can be said to be conservative; (and this is a drawback), but it often gets exaggerrated or subjective to what that actually means. As for Florida....is that traditional anything? South, sure. Traditional south? I'm not so sure....
@mrmeeker7313
@mrmeeker7313 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this. Pretty much anywhere in Florida outside of a big city (and likely a sizeable portion of people in that city) is thickly and long ingrained in Southern culture. But people who visit just aren't as likely to visit Keystone or Madison or Ocala as they are Orlando or Miami or really any tourist beach town. Yes Florida is its own beast, and don't dare forget that if you visit, but if you're not used to Southern culture in general, you might find a decent dose of culture shock visiting many places in Florida. And along with what SUpersaiyajinjerkbag said, it's really just more or less a branch of a larger Southern US culture, mixed with heavy elements of its own state and regional cultures, with that mix concentrating most around the most densely populated areas.

I live in Tennessee and love it here! Nashville is now considered one of the "it" cities and there's much more there than just country music, although that is certainly part of the culture there! West TN is bordered by the Mississippi River, one of the world's longest rivers, and the Appalachian mountains border East TN, which is one of the world longest mountain ranges! I live in West TN but will admit that East TN is the most beautiful part. The population of TN is larger than most states but the state itself is smaller than most states so you would expect it to feel crowded but it doesn't because TN has historically been rural so dozens of small cities dot the state and everyone lives in suburbs or rural areas surrounding the cities instead of crowding into large cities. Memphis and Nashville are the two largest cities and neither have a million people in the cities but they do in the metro areas. If you love the outdoors, there is plenty to do here and at the same time, you are never more than about 30 minutes away from small a city, were all of the conveniences of cities are available. There are also a large number of natural beauties including underground waterfalls, vast wildernesses and again the mountains which are stunning beautiful, especially in early Fall when the leaves have just changed colors! I could continue but this has already turned into an article!

Your right I'm born and raised in Tennessee, and it's great. I live about 45 min outside of Nashville, and my town is booming. Everywhere around here is growing insanely fast. Mark, Just in case you don't know when a county is DRY one cannot buy nor drink alcohol. If a county is MOIST, you can drink alcohol but can't buy it. A county is called WET someone can buy and drink alcohol. There are many counties like this through out the entire US. Did you know that almost all native Eskimo villages in Alaska are DRY? It's a felony to even process a bottle of liquor.

I am from rural Georgia, west of Savannah (deep south). I have to disagree with some of the negative remarks in this video because they apply only to tourist areas and only if you're behaving as a tourist. The bug comment is true, the dry counties (as far as I've ever experienced) only apply to liquor. I've never been anywhere that beer was not sold. The number one problem I would imagine European tourists would have with the south is either lack of, or extremely inadequate public transportation. Only the very poor use public transit in the deep south (with a few exceptions). It is necessary to rent a car unless you're taking a short vacation to Savannah, New Orleans or Atlanta. Also it is very important to avoid certain neighborhoods, almost all violent crime here happens in these neighborhoods. Most of the south is extremely safe (especially all rural areas) but the ghettos in even small cities can be extremely dangerous. There is a huge amount of natural beauty and I highly recommend renting a car. It is the only way to access anywhere but the designated tourist locations. I highly recommend Savannah for a vacation. Its my favorite city anywhere, although I'm biased. Great nightlife, serve alcohol until 3 a.m. (even on weeknights), great food, music, culture etc. He is also right about the food. Eating diverse cuisine is my favorite part of traveling, but we have the best food in the world (and its affordable). And in reply to the comments about Virginia... its not really the south anymore, at least not culturally... they put sugar and milk in grits.... completely unacceptable and nasty. Various other things like that example separate VA from the rest of the south GA, AL, MS, LA, SC etc..

Have you ever been to Virginia and if so what did you think? I like it here well enough I guess except it's too damn hot in the summer time, temps in the 90's with 100% humidity and you walk outside and you can't breathe. I hate it!
