Southport is not really a town; it's part of Fairfield, but it's beautiful. Another park to consider is Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden, which has some 30 miles of trails packed into a small space. You'll find everything from moderate walking to scrambling (i.e. using both hands and feet). In the northwest corner, there's a 50-miles section of the Appalachian Trail as well.

Gillette's Castle State Park is also a nice half day visit, with hiking trails and the German-style castle built during WW1. Close by is Devil's Hopyard State Park. Sadly Hartford is a pretty dangerous city, because the Capitol is amazing and would otherwise be worth a visit. Most believe it to be the most beautiful state capitol in the country.

I live in Mystic CT and I agree with your recommendations. I have a few more - the cemeteries are fascinating. I mean they are old and filled with really unique tombstones . Not many places in the USA where you can find tombstones dating back to the 1600’s. Many of these stones have written stories of the persons life and/or death. If you like antiques you’ll love the number of antique stores here and there. And despite CT being costly you’ll find some very reasonable prices in those stores. Then there’s the Peabody Museum, affiliated with Yale University, which has some of the finest collections of dinosaurs in the world. As for lodging accommodations check out some of the Airbnb’s. There’s more still but I’ve said enough. Come and visit, you’ll be happy you did…

As a nutmegger, don't expect anyone local to pull over and help you or anyone to oblige themselves to help you. We're almost ruthlessly self-reliant folk. If someone asks us for help, we're almost dumbfounded. Either they're from a rich area that has enough money to throw at all their problems or they're woods-type who change tires, have hook ups with locals and fix their own stuff. You don't survive the random weather shifts, biting wet cold and constant flooding without figuring out how to get things done yourself because, despite popular belief, we arent a bunch of rich folk. There's some, but not most of us are just carving ourselves out a place here.
@dougsanteramo30082 жыл бұрын
Thank you for covering this area. I lived next to Mystic for a couple years and I apparently the name nutmeger comes from the story that nutmeg was a popular trade export from CT in the colonial era. Besides the casinos and Mystic. CT is boring, expensive and miserable. Avoid Hartford, Waterbury, Bridgeport, Norwich, Meriden, New Haven, etc if you value your life. Lots of rough neighborhoods. Even the beautiful woods here are filled with deers with lots of Lyme Disease.
@rebeccahetrick65762 жыл бұрын
And the Merritt is just as bad as 95, there's just no rigs allowed on it. But there's no shoulder for most of it so when (not if, WHEN) there's an accident, you're literally trapped. The trees are so close to the road, or the embankments are too steep, so you can't even off-road to get around. I've been stuck for 2 hours on the Merritt before. I DREAD driving on that road..... And the deer here are suicidal. They TRY to get hit. They even jump onto moving cars. Both my mom and my sister have had deer jump through their windshields! My mom nearly took a hoof to the face when one jumped on her windshield!

I visited Mystic Seaport twice so far. First visit was during a wooden ship festival with a lot more ships than usual including a copy of Amistad. On both occasions I visited Joseph Conrad, which used to be Danish training ship Georg Stage, and as a Dane and former sailor I felt obliged 😉 - and of course I also visited Gerda III, that was used to smuggle Jews from Denmark to Sweden during the German occupation.

As a CT native I agree with the comment about Dunkin but I would say that is for drive through/take away. If you want to eat out breakfast like a native, you can’t beat the local diner. You must try a CT lobster roll which is hot lobster in butter not cold lobster salad prevalent in other nearby states. And besides learning that we were the Nutmeg state in our grade school history class, I can tell you that noooobody says Nutmegger.

Don't of Connecticut: don't use the Merritt Parkway... it is two lanes in either direction with people driving 70 or 80+. If you're prone to road rage this highway will trigger it in you. On/off ramps are incredibly short as are entries and exits to the gas stations. Just avoid this highway.

Way overrated, tourist trap bigtime. You know what Mystic has that other sea coast towns don't? Nothing. Every sea coast town up the East Coast has pizza and beaches and little quaint shops. Give me a break. It takes 45 minutes to get thru aquarium and then what? Seaport? Your kids will not enjoy it. Closet public beach? 30 minutes away. Worked in Mystic 20 years. Probably the most overrated place in the Northeast. You'll wish you were somewhere else after a day here because there will be nothing else to do. Just keep driving thru to Newport RI, Cape Cod, Boston, Marthas Vineyard, etc. etc.

For a 10min video, you did a great job of summarizing the highlights. And as far as tourism, there isn't much more unfortunately. Our state government has never done much to support this business sector and our parks are pathetic compared to NYS and MA, which are enviable. If we ever decide to stop rescuing the dying city of Hartford and investing in the recreation and enjoyment of the rest of the state, we could compete with our neighboring state parks.

I was born and raised in Ct. I think you represented the beautiful Mystic Ct. perfectly however, Being from from central Ct. to south western part of the state, mainly the Naugatuck valley area. Although we are only about 25 minutes from the shore line we are very different from the beautiful Mystic. Ct. from pizza to hotels and most of the things you mentioned. You won't get the New England. "Port village" vibe here and clams on a pizza? Not here . We do have some sandy beaches but because They are in Long Island sound, the water is dark green and you won't find white sand. Camping, fishing, and hiking nice day trips too. I do agree that the food here is fantastic regardless of type of cuisine and We practically have a pizza place on every corner. If you are visiting Ct and are from the western United states, I highly recommend you try "Dunkin's "jelly doughnuts" because as I found out while Vacationing jelly doughnuts don't exist out west, "Hummel's" foot long hotdogs, a Ct. company. Instead my humble opinion, the best hotdog ever and in this part of Ct., try "Zoi's" or Roseland's. They are popular in this area. One of my most memorable long weekends in Ct. was aboard an oldworld type sailing ship. Meals included. The one I was on was a clipper ship they offered from day trips to several days. It's well worth checking into if they are still offered. Regardless of which area I hope your time in Ct. Is a memorable one.
