A playthrough of LJN's 1994 license-based platformer for the Super Nintendo, Wolverine: Adamantium Rage.
Have you ever noticed how small children, when they lack the words to express themselves, sometimes just let loose a scream of pure, unadulterated frustration? As a grown man, this game made me do exactly that. More than once I had to put the controller down, walk away from the machine, and actively avoid talking to anyone for several minutes for fear of unfairly taking my temper out on them.
Wolverine: Adamantium Rage is absolutely vile, and I don't mean that in the least bit hyperbolically. I honestly believe that anyone that claims that LJN's NES X-Men game was the worst Marvel game ever made has never played this game. And anyone that tells you that this isn't LJN's worst game deserves a condescending smile and a pat on the head, as if to say, "That's so cute that you think that!"
Sure, the title screen looks awesome, the in-game graphics are passable, and the soundtrack kicks ass. And the bio screens look like they're from Carmen San Diego, which is kinda neat. That's the only positivity I have to offer here. If I suffered from anger-management issues, I'd be in jail long before getting even halfway through it.
Rather than picking apart every single aspect of the game, though, I'll say that the majority of its issues boil down to the mechanics. The collision detection is ridiculously unforgiving, and Wolverine loves to skid into the exact wrong place to land hits.
A common scenario: an enemy is shooting at you. You swing and miss by about 2 pixels, so you inch forward and swing again. You still miss because now you're too close for your claws to hit, even though he can still hit you, and he'll continue to do so until you reposition yourself. After you've lost a substantial chunk of your health manoeuvering back into position, you miss again, and the cycle begins anew. Yay!
Just think - that's against just one! The game loves to overwhelm you with up to a half-dozen of these douchebags at a time, and it's more often by sheer luck than skill that you survive these encounters.
Even better, there's a counter that shows up (with no explanation at all, mind you) at the bottom of the screen that tells you how many enemies you have to kill before leaving the level, but it never tells you which ones, and not all enemies count toward that total, so good luck there.
Finally, that goddamned maze near the end... I swear, if I was 10 years old and playing this, I would've been in absolute tears of frustration at that point. It took me hours to map that section out and figure out the right order for the switches. Everyone loves mazes, right? Especially ones that get restarted everytime you're swarmed by enemies that you can't defend against in tight quarters. Right?
Give me Home Improvement, Batman Forever, Bebe's Kids, or even Race Drivin'. Anything but this. I honestly don't believe I've yet to play a worse SNES game than Wolverine: Adamantium Rage, and I pray that I never have to.

There must have been something wrong with me, because I actually enjoyed playing this back in the day. One of the little touches I enjoyed was the addition of Wolverine's healing factor. I thought I was so clever by leaving Wolverine standing still and going to grab a snack while his health slowly crawled back to 100%... ...until I saw that timer suddenly appear. After that, I rushed through the level as fast as I could, but couldn't make it before the timer ran out, and I saw this little girl flying at me. I thought it was some kind of bonus thing at first, but she grabbed my leg and exploded, which was an automatic game over. It freaked me out, and I thought it was cool back then.

She's also a combination of two characters from the comics who happen to be sisters. She has Benazir Kaur's name (who was the White Queen at the time), but her sister Reeva Payge's powers (who was the Black Queen at the time). Neither of them were named Fugue, which oddly enough was the name of a giant Morlock that looks like Wendigo. What a mess, on top of that godawful art. My best guess is that they wanted to use Selena Gallio's more iconic Black Queen and wanted to avoid using White Queen, as that would be too confusing given how Emma Frost was blowing up around then. Very odd.

So let me get this straight... of all of Wolverine's rather extensive and awesome lineup of bad guys, they decided on Shinobi Shaw as his primary antagonist for this game. (Nothing against Shinobi Shaw, he's just not a Wolverine baddie). Not Sabertooth or Lady Deathstrike. Not the Silver Samurai. Not Omega Red. Not even Shingen or Ogun. They chose Shinobi Shaw. Then they decided it would be a great idea to have Wolverine never actually fight Shaw. Instead you just see him for like 2 seconds and then leave never to be heard from again and the final boss is some giant cow that they made up. Then the game just stops with no resolution to what little plot there was. Brilliant story choices all around.

I remember this game back from the 90s. When they made the x men game for the nes and wolverine for the nes as well. There are the 2 x men games for the sega genesis like x men and x men 2 clone wars...I don't know about this wolverine game I did not know that was one the late 1995.

I was really frustated watching this even though it is only for a mere minutes because you're having a hard time killing enemies and it takes forever (because the hit apparently didn't land just like what you say in the description?). I can't imagine how frustating it is to actually play. Thanks for your sacrifice tho, I won't touch this game ever.

Having played this game a lot I find that it ranges from annoying to outright frustrating. I've never beaten it and have only gotten as far as the level after Cyber. The game is very biased in favor of the enemies. From the hit detection to how many hits it can take just to down one guy. Healing factor is a cruel joke since there is a hidden time limit in each level too.

What's REALLY bad about this game is that Capcom did their own X-Men SNES around the same time as this bad Wolverine game which makes you wonder how LJN was able to do an X-Men game at the same time Capcom did theirs?

My guess is since they were separate comic books (Wolverine's solo comic regularly outsold the X-Men comics at the time) they were licensed as separate entities, barring a few things shared between them. It's pretty interesting how this game focuses pretty strongly on characters that were featured almost exclusively in the Wolverine solo comics of the time (Sabretooth and Shinobi Shaw being the two exceptions - even Lady Deathstrike didn't show up much in X-Men comics by the early to mid-90s) and apart from Sabretooth the villains in the game weren't really the best known villains in the X-Men rogues gallery of that era and are generally B-tier (no Juggernaut, Sentinels/Master Mold, Magneto and the Acolytes, Blob, Mojo, Mystique, Apocalypse, Mister Sinister, Omega Red, etc). Meanwhile the Capcom game felt like it wanted to contain as much of the X-men universe as possible, so you get to see a lot of stuff that had been featured in the new flagship X-Men Volume 2 comic: Gambit, Cyclops, Wolverine, Psylocke, Beast, Magneto, Apocalypse, the Sentinels, the Genoshan guard, and with the exception of Psylocke these were also all pretty prominent in the animated series. I wouldn't be surprised if LJN's license prevented them from including certain characters (Magneto, the Sentinels) and allow others to appear in cutscenes only (Xavier, the other X-Men), and vice versa the Capcom game couldn't feature characters like Lady Deathstrike and (iirc) Sabretooth. Licensing agreements can be really specific about this sort of thing. Sabretooth is likewise absent from X-Men 2: Clone Wars for the Genesis, which was also released around the same time. And considering how ubiquitous Sabretooth was in that era of X-Men comics/the animated series, and how heavily he was featured in the Phalanx Covenant comic book storyline on which the game was based, him not being part of the X-Men licensing agreement but the Wolverine licensing agreement instead seems like a plausible reason for why he wasn't in either X-Men game released around that time.

@@Jayce_Alexander I doubt wolverine outsold the two main x books at the time uncanny xmen and xmen I could be wrong but its doubtful but I have no doubt as an x adjacent book wolverine sold very well due to him being the most popular xman.
