I feel so bad for her! :( Having a comfort smell is totally normal, but when it gets to eating non-food items I think that mental health starts to play a role. I think that she might have been going through something really tough, and in her weakness she started having compulsive thoughts more often and more intensely. She is most likely coping and eating the detergent was a regressive coping method that she compulsively started. Like it probably provides comfort to her every time she does it and she may not be able to feel happy/comfortable in whatever situation she's currently in.

I used to have pica in a month I would kill 3/4 a small box of baking soda. I’m so glad I’m over it I had a iron deficiency. I got pregnant with my daughter and I absolutely had to take iron pills then they were huge but I figured it was for my baby and I’ve been better ever since. That was 5 years ago.
