The funny thing is, John Lennon was often very insecure about his singing voice and sometimes doubted himself, but I can honestly say I think he wrote one of the greatest love songs ever. He worked hard to overcome a lot of his demons, I really believe if he wasn't killed at age 40, we would have seen the next few years of Lennon creating more masterpieces as he was really getting in touch with himself. The best thing about this song is that its so open and vulnerable, when you listen to the words, it's simple, honest and touches REAL emotion. It's actually super hard to write like that. Rest in Peace John, we love you too!

These lyrics tell me of a woman who hasn't expelled or left her man abandoned, for something bad he did and/or said, but who has very greatly expressed her displeasure, with a fair warning. He makes amends with wonderful words of deep and real sincerity, perhaps fully fit for whatever bad he said, and maybe even for some of whatever he did. But, for whatever he did, there must truly be more than words, and ending with "I love you" isn't enough. By doing and/or saying bad, he did not love her. One must do right to love. He doesn't have to actually say all this, but it will all be contained in what he does, in the love he gives before he says he loves AND adores her. Since she didn't go beyond a fair warning, she will accept his response. She will understand its full meaning. Mutual love and adoration will bloom again, as new as ever. In real life, this is how a man must respond in such a situation, not just with truly sincere words, but only ending with "I love you". Oh well. Most of these pop songs are only three minutes long. Can't cram everything into three minutes. All in all, I really like this song, emotionally, if not so much substantively.
