When telling people about what the internet used to be like I reference stuff like this all the time. How there were so few people on the internet compared to now that the weird ones and weird sites really stood out. I tell people that if they want to get the most accurate idea of what the internet was like, they need to install tor and browse the deep web. That's the closest thing to the old days that exists. Slow, confusing and gross with illegal things everywhere.

I remember having a 33.6k modem and pouring over supposed "hacks" to make it faster when 56k started catching on. Each increase in speed back then had a huge impact on your Internet experience. Now broadband is "fast enough" that any increases are just icing on the cake rather than a whole new, way better cake.
