We use social media to keep in touch with our family and close friends, and to share photos. If you use reasonable care, and are moderately skeptical of ads and phishing emails/texts, most experienced adults can safely navigate the Internet. Of course, the platform "owners" can (and should) do more to protect their users.

My job said the same to me that i didn't click to confirm my status and they tried to suspend me. I said that text was from a random # with a link on it, if i would have clicked on it and got a virus, you would have suspened me, now i DON'T click on it to keep from getting scammed or a virus and you want to suspend me for NOT clicking on it.... I had an “IT person” call me about a possible issue. I heard the accent and then got extremely rude and insulting with him - then hung up. I realized later that our company brought in a group of foreign IT workers to save on costs. My bad.

My advice: Just assume every unexpected link you receive is phishing or a scam. The way i see it, it’s probably not important anyways if it’s coming from somebody you barely speak to. So don’t even risk it. If it’s somebody you know well, and it’s that important, they should have other ways to get in touch with you, and they will. Or you could text them and verify it’s legit.

I work in cybersecurity. You’re exactly on the money here. This principle in the industry is “trust but verify”. If you’re dealing with an honest person, there will never be any issue with verifying what you believe you’ve been told. Only a dishonest person would disagree with that.

A few years ago an old tv movie popped up on KZbin and I commented how much I loved it as a teenager and about how all the girls at school loved that movie too! Then some guy asked for my email in the comments because he wanted to talk to me! I gave it to him and we chatted for a few days then all of a sudden he wanted me to send him a picture of myself, but I told him no! Then he sends about twenty hearts and flowers emojis and starts saying how beautiful I was and that he loved me so much! I just said that was a lot to send me in just a few days and how did he know I was beautiful since I refused to send him a picture! He kept up the saying "I love you" in his reply but I just blocked him! Then someone read his response to me months later and told me he was a scam artist and the picture he used wasn't of him and was stolen! I thanked her but told her I had blocked him months ago! Social media is full these creeps!

Pssst - deleting a social media app is as effective as a smoker putting their cigarettes in the next room and thinking they’ve quit. It takes 30mseconds to reinstall the app, and you’ll be logged in and ready to roll. I actually DID quite Facebook - it took weeks of effort and waiting

Hover over the link and look near the bottom left of your web browser to make sure the link address is real. If it’s not linked directly from the reputable source, it’s likely fake .

My Mom keeps getting a screen that says Microsoft has locked her computer for "safety reasons" and for $300 they will unlock the computer. She fell for this once and we had to scramble to stop the check and close her bank account. Now she has to pay for extra security from the local internet service provider.

This has been going on for years. I've gotten a few very similar to this about 5 years ago. I said "nice try, I'm not clicking the link". They will also make a profile with your friend's or family's name and talk about a "Government Program". I said.. "So the Gov. uses Messenger to sign up for their program?" followed by some laugh emojis.

if on desktop hover over the link (don't click) they'll be a preview of the full URL usually lower left and itll have typos or whatever nonsense. also disable others from posting on your feed/privatize your account. 2FA is always a good choice

Facebook is so lame at removing scammers. You can report them, and they ignore it. I got a weird message that said I had posted something about fishing or cyber security but you couldn’t see what I allegedly posted. This was legit from Facebook but I can’t help but wonder where it came from, of course you can try to protest it, but since you don’t know what they are complaining about and they won’t share it it’s useless. There is a lot of information on this kind of problem on Reddit.
