Women and Photography in the Nineteenth Century

Photography in the nineteenth century is often seen as a men's profession, but women contributed to the trade in a number of ways.
They owned studios, took photographs and worked as finishers and retouchers. As consumers, they influenced the way that studios looked and operated, making them into female-friendly spaces.
In this talk, Curator Human History Dr Jill Haley explores the various ways that women shaped the profession, both behind and before the camera.

The weak point of this presentation is that the emphasis is on the number of women doing photography rather than how women contributed to photography. I wanted to watch this video because I personally find the contribution women gave to photography in this time period amazing. The droning voice of the presenter and her misguided approach prevented me from continuing watching. For those who may not know, women may not have had a large footprint in the beginning of this art movement but they had a powerful impact. Rather than concentrating on the negative aspect of small numbers of women in this art form, we should be celebrating the ones that did participate and the incredible legacy they left us.
