Can somebody explain to me how not wanting kids is “selfish”? Like, to me wanting kids is selfish…
@lioness2000
@lioness2000 Жыл бұрын
Wanting kids is taking resources from already existing life, worsening the overpopulation problem and climate change, it creates a lot of trash (diapers etc) and unwanted items like small clothes when the kids grow, old toys etc. I have never understood how not making a new human is selfish. Like, how?? Parents are jsut so jealous to childfree people who can do what they want with their lives.

Unless you live off the grid, then having kids automatically increases the family consumption and consumerism exponentially.

@@sparrowtakesflightLiterally how is it selfish? If you consider being childfree “selfish” you must also consider literally everything you do for yourself as being selfish. When you eat food you’re being selfish. When you decide to watch a movie you’re being selfish. When you get a pet you’re being selfish. When you listen to music you’re being selfish. Etc etc.

There's this deeply ingrained idea that women are meant to serve others, and if we don't want to spend our lives serving others in the prescribed way (husband, kids, etc), then that means we're spending our lives only serving ourselves, which some people are as selfish. I don't get it either. It's insane.

If a woman doesn't have kids, she doesn't have to sacrifice herself daily, it's easier life. That's why people perceive as wanting to be selfish because caring for a child is very hard.

Its easy to say when your young and pretty and people want and actively seek to be with you. As you age, your friends will drift away a long with your looks and further on they will die as will your family/extended family. Ageing sucks but kids are out best chance at a graceful end. I know plenty of childless women in the 50/60's and they are permanently heartbroken for the most part. At that age, no one really wants to make you a part of their life, unlike when your young and vibrant. Its really sad to see them at family gatherings, they feel like they are just being pittied and have very little to talk about due to missing out on such a big gap of their life compared to others. I used to think like you, then I realized it was short sighted. I have a little girl and I gotta say, if your financially stable and have a decent relationship, a kid is not miserable and stressful, its the opposite. The love you feel and the new things to look forward to are rejuvinating.

Having children so you are not alone at Christmas is a bizarre reason to have kids. Childfree people still have families who involve them in holiday plans. Uh, what? We absolutely celebrate Christmas in Japan? In fact, it's gotten bigger and bigger each year. It's everywhere, and they even start putting out the decorations at the end of October. What we don't have is Thanksgiving. But Christmas is more a lovers holiday here rather than a family one.

They do t do Christmas like the west. It’s not a public holiday like in the west. I’ve been in Japan twice for Christmas and spent both times skiing in Hakuba and it was awesome. Where I come from everything is shut on Christmas. Yeah, there were decorations and Santa was riding the chairlift but the focus was more on fried chicken than eating turkey or ham and having a public holiday.

Although I don't mean to sound disrespectful, I don't agree that the world is just simply too corrupt and troubled as a reason not to have kids. This world has been corrupt, troubled, and terrible for centuries, and yet, women still have children. My grandparents were raised during World War I. My parents were raised during the Great Depression and World War II. I was raised during the Vietnam War. Watergate. The drug culture. the riots in the inner cities and on college campuses. The Civil Rights movement. The assassinations of both the Kennedy brothers, Martin Luther King, and Medgar Evers. The Bay of Pigs Invasion. Castro taking over Cuba. Protests against the Vietnam War. The war and violence in the Middle East. The energy crisis. Draft card burnings. The murders of those eight student nurses in Chicago by Richard Speck. The Manson Family murders. And the list goes on and on and on. However, I do agree that it's just way too expensive to raise a child. Food. Clothing. Shelter. Utilities. Insurance. Transportation. Medical expenses. School expenses. Activities and recreation. Child care. I even heard that it costs about $250,000 a year just to raise a child; although I might me wrong. Either way, it just too expensive to raise a child. Even with both parents working full-time jobs today, the cost of living is so sky high that it's not even funny. By not having kids, you're saving over $200,000 a year right there. Now that's a good reason why shouldn't have kids in the first place.

I don't want kids cause I saw how much my mom struggled in life. From age 7 to 18, my mom wore the same hand me down clothes everyday (some had holes in them!) she got when I was a baby. Didn't go clothes shopping for herself or buy something nice for herself at all, she couldn't afford to, she had me and my siblings to feed and clothe. Also, I watched flies fly out of her wallet, she had no money left as soon as the paycheck came in. I remember being 9 and thinking to myself "This is no way to live, barely scraping by." It only finally got a little better for her when my siblings and I got to college age and had our own jobs. My mom only then finally went and bought herself something nice, *20 years later* mind you. 20!

Absolutely true. My dad and landlord (same age) both had 7 kids. We all love our dad. We take turns visiting him and having cookouts. The landlord treated his family badly, so he was all alone after he became a widow. He was also alone when he was diagnosed with cancer and during all his appointments. Then finally he ends his own life leaving a note saying he wished he had treated his family better. I think the loneliness during the time of cancer treatment was the final straw. We don't prepare for being over 65 anymore.

One thing that terrified me when I thought about motherhood was the sleep deprivation. This was before the internet. Now, on mom subreddits, women talk about the absolute torture of sleep deprivation. Moms whose kids didn't sleep through the night for FOUR years. The nuclear family combined with our economy pushes young families far from the intergnerational familial sharing of child-rearing and mothers are just scorched. I hear a lot of dads rhapsodize about parenthood. Turns out they get plenty of sleep and take 45-minute bathroom breaks all by themselves.

I'll be 66 on October 2, and I never had kids myself. In fact, I never wanted to get married and have kids period. I was raised in a family of eight kids. Six brothers, one sister, and myself. (I'm the third oldest.) Four of my brothers are mentally handicapped. But unfortunately, one of them passed away back in July of 2000. I just don't have any patience with kids. I would go to jail for what I would do to the. I strongly believe what both the Bible and the Catholic Church teaches us about sex, marriage, family, and relationships. Therefore, based on my family life growing up, as well as my Catholic upbringing, I decided not to get married and have kids. I chose instead to work full time and travel instead. I was in the workforce for 40 years. By being single and childfree, I was able to get to work on time and put in a full day's work without having to worry about my child getting sick, child care/babysitting issues, if my child's school closes early due to bad weather, my child's having problems in school and I have to go see his or her teacher, and so forth. Also, if you love to travel, you can always plan your vacations around your job schedule instead of a school's calendar. A lot of these schools don't allow you take family vacations during the school year because of each state's mandatory school attendance laws. Family vacations during the school year are unexcused absences. For example, here in Pennsylvania, where I live at, K-12 students have to be in school for 180 days a year. Also, back in April of 2015, there was this guy, who lives right here in the Philadelphia area, who took his two kids out of school, and up to Boston because he was running in the Boston Marathon. He then got a letter from the school's principal saying that it was unexcused absence. He wrote the principal back and he told her that his two kids learned more up there in Boston instead of sitting inside of a classroom; and that he would do it again. Don't let anybody judge you simply because you choose not to have kids. That's both your choice and your decision. In fact, St. Paul says that the single person pleases The Lord; whereas the married person pleases the spouse. After all, getting married and having kids isn't for everybody; especially me. And it's going to stay that way also.

I was just thinking of a famous Reddit post about a single dad. The birth control failed, and his partner at the time wanted an abortion but he refused. She gave him full custody, but other than child support wanted nothing to do with the kid. He had somehow gotten into his head that once the kid was born, the maternal instinct would somehow kick in and was disappointed to find out it didn't. He was tired all the time. The kid cost a ton of money. He had to rely on his mom and sisters for child care. He wanted advice on how to "make" his baby mama take the kid every once in a while so he can go on dates. The comments section *savaged* him, pointing out that he more or less that he had it coming, and what did he expect would happen when he forced this woman to have this kid against her will. Told him that he had to suck it up.

My autism makes it hard to function without a routine and I'm not in a position where I can raise a child completely on my own, leaving me in a position where I would have to mostly rely on my partner (something I'm not comfortable doing) to survive. I have maybe 10 years where I could still have a healthy child without any extra help but I'm making peace with the fact that if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen and I'd rather regret having a kid than regret having a kid I couldn't take care of.

What if that child has the things I have? I do not think that I should allow a child of my own blood to suffer with what I’ve suffered just cause I want to further some stupid bloodline, WHO CARES if I die alone? Not everyone should have kids. Not everyone would make good parents. Some people are happy being child free and fuck the people who keep trying to gaslight them into thinking they arent. Everyone has a different view on personal fulfillment and if you find fulfillment in being a parent, great! Being a parent is hard and its awesome that you find that to be your best life, but someone else might not find happiness in the same way and it has ZERO consequences for you, so bug out. To the woman at 6 minutes: I know. I never had them, but I know. I was the eldest of 6 kids. I'm the oldest. I KNOW. Big factor in why I'm child free.

tbh even if i had a better childhood i probably wouldn't consider having children unless i felt financially stable enough to have them, and even then- i can barely handle my niece and nephew, i feel like having a child would just make me a worse person "BuT yOu'D bE a GoOd PaReNt" hell no dawg

I like quiet, and freedom, because I don't have kids. I have said no marriage, and kids, starting when I was 7. I will always be that way. I'm lucky no one ask, or expect me to babysit. I can't stand kids

When he was 15, my son told me, "I wish I didn't have YOU as MY father." God heard that earnest plea, and granted my son's wish, removing both him and his mother from my life before I had met her, resulting in her son being fathered by someone else rather than me. I never did have any children. At the age of 60, that's not likely to change.

Having to put your childs needs before yourself, and taking care of it everyday, is the most beautiful, soul filling task you can do. It just fills your heart and soul and you will love the hard work of it. It's just so full of love. Before I was a mom I was just concerned with my own comfort. That doesn't matter anymore now, I am happy to have less time for myself and just give all my love to my child

The redhead thinks along the same lines as myself. I love kids, I love good parents... but I also like not sacrificing the freedom clawed back after a bad relationship, I like putting myself first after being a people pleaser, we're not swimming in money, my identity doesn't hinge on being a mother to be "a real woman", I've never had the maternal instinct to the degree I want to incubate life in my womb and expend a load of minerals and health that I have also just clawed back. Also I'm too sensitive to over stimulation, I know the attention to detail would fall to me and in the future I would like to live in a motorhome and tour the country on a motorbike. All good reasons to never do it. If you are on the fence you probably don't want kids. I also have a husband I want to focus my time and energy on..he is enough for me and maybe a dog or dog fostering in the future.

I'm in my early 40's. I haven't wanted kids since my teens. I don't want to have something growing in me, I dont want to birth, I dont like babies. I like kids, but I dont want to be a mother to them. They are expensive and I can just afford to care for my own basic lifestyle and care for my mental health. When I tell people I didn't have kids and I have a dog, TO PARENTS, they say, 'Good decision!' So yeah, we are going to be proud and happy with our decisions.

I’m not unhappy because I don’t have a husband and kids. I’m unhappy because rent and grocery prices are through the roof and I want to be able to just buy a cute place alone by myself.

I’m a mama one and I still get crap for that. A lot of people only want a new one in phase but as soon as that child has her own opinions and wants to be alone that there’s a problem because they have autonomy. My child is a little older and lives her best life I don’t limit her or try to 430 or so away. She’s her own person I my own person. We should encourage that instead of wanting our kids to be mini me’s.

I think many women these days have kids just so they can walk around dressed the same as their baby and call them their mini me's, but, just like you said, when the baby grows and starts to become it's own person, then it's not fun to be a parent anymore. Most people should just get a doll or plushie to dress up and cuddle if they don't want their babies to grow up to be their own person.
