Women make up majority of people ‘sleeping rough’ on Melbourne’s streets

The Herald Sun's Suzan Delibasic says homeless people in Melbourne have been forced into “vulnerable situations” after government-funded hotel accommodation ended.
“They’re sleeping rough, they’re being robbed, some are even being attacked and the really sad thing is that majority of these people sleeping rough are women,” Ms Delibasic told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
A woman in her 40s told Ms Delibasic all her belongings, “down to her lunchbox”, were stolen.
Ms Panahi said homeless women face “all sorts of additional dangers”.

How is this now an issue?!! Men have always been homeless, many of them veterans, and society couldn't gaf, cuz they're men and we're supposed to be throw aways. Women have equality now, so since women disproportionately out number men, we should expect to see alot more women homeless, before it's actually deemed a crisis.

And the whole time men were the majority, it wasn’t an issue? Are the stats the same for every major city? The whole of the country? Homeless ppl shouldn’t be dismissed off the cuff, but such reports usually have to be taken with a pinch of salt. In the UK for example, woman’s institutions were tasked with collecting and reporting data about domestic violence, female homelessness and such. During this period there were no such things as a male DV victim. However, now that the task of data collection is more diversified, and reports are gathered from many other sources, where it can easily be verified, and is analysed by the national office of statistics, it turns out 35% of all DV victims are actually male! Take into consideration the reluctance of men and boys to accept many types of DV as being criminal, never mind reporting it as such to authorities, and specialists in the subject now estimated males are actually the majority of victims. The same is true in almost all socio economic polls and surveys, but little is done about such things until it’s women who are the victims and most negatively affected ….. it would seem any notion of egalitarianism is still a long way off yet.

Am from India . My window to Australia used to be Radio Australia which used to be broadcast from Melbourne which even though I never visited so far is a very dear city to me . A bit shocked and sad to watch this news . Even though I am an outsider I 'd suggest that instead of taking hundreds and hundreds of refugees every year the Aussie govt. should take care of these homeless people first and provide them the same facilities that are provided to refugess.cause afterall they are their own people. And suddenly sky news australia goes woke. Those policies giving free stuff to a demographic attract the same demographic. So the situation was created where money was borrowed to give free stuff, attracting people who wanted and took advantage of the policy and when the money ran out, those people remained so now there's a larger demographic. It is entirely predictable. The solution should not be more of the same policies that created the problem. Instead, consider the alternative, communities want to attract demographics that contribute to the tax base, not those who consume the taxes, which should be going to things that create assets for all taxpayers, allowing the taxpayers an easier means of passively contributing even more to the tax base. Generally, these would be infrastructure projects. The solution for taxpayers is to move away as that social contract has been broken by the elected officials. The same officials who keep getting voted in by people who support policies that create tax burdens on taxpayers. Now, consider the difference in the way the circumstances are presented.

I dare say the same can be claimed of male rough sleepers, many have been abused, neglected and down beaten, by family, by the system, the courts, their parents etc…. But few care about them, or take such level of circumstance into consideration when it comes to men and boys. Domestic violence is not a gendered crime, only the narrative is gendered.

Call the police if its safe to do so. They're a minority those meth heads. And not all of them are trouble but when they are they are big trouble (had a knife to me neck once you're sympathised with). Who is giving you grief? Are you able to get them into mental health / 000 ambulance for rehab?
