There is a condition that has very common symptoms (fatigue, aches, slow thinking, heartburn, brittle bones) that is often over-looked by health care providers. It can lead to terrible medical conditions and a reduction of your life-span of up to 6 years if it is not diagnosed and corrected. Hyperparathyroidism is more common than many doctors realize.
Very often the only lab finding is a slightly elevated calcium level. Doctors often consider this elevated calcium to be not important and don't even mention it to you. If you have a slightly elevated calcium (even 1/10th of a point high) you need the other lab-work I talk about in this video, and perhaps a referral to a specialist. The only ways to know is to check your serum calcium level (often not done), and then to follow up with additional testing.
The additional lab tests you will need are an intact PTH, ionized Calcium, fractionated Alkaline Phosphatase, and Vitamin D-25. If any of these levels are abnormal your doctor should refer you to an endocrinologist +/- order an Ultrasound/CT Scan of your Parathyroid Glands. Smoldering hyperparathyroidism can be difficult to spot for some health-care providers, but can make you feel terrible

Dr. Berry, I've been off kilter dizzy (no rotation), for 5 years every single waking moment. I`m an RN and lost my career because i can`t work like this. 25 specialists all look at me cross eyed. I have all of these symptoms with hypothyroidism and benign nodules. Do you know if this can cause an off kilter dizziness or a feeling of pressure on the brain (not a headache). I hope you answer, I'm DESPERATE and can't live like this anymore. Thank you

Hello Dr. Berry, I started eating: fewer carbohydrates, sugar, less drinking soft drinks, 3 eggs per day and circa 0.4 kg meat per day (chicken, pig, cow (beef) and some vegetables and I am less hungry. I fart very little, do have more energy. I eat basically 2 meals per day. I drink a lot of water, tea without sugar. Before I started, I needed to eat at least 3 times a day, because these carbohydrates made me feel hungry. In the first days I started, I had a headache (withdrawal symptoms sugar / carbohydrates?), but now that is completely gone. At the moment I have random diarrhea (not necessarily on every day). I am also losing some weight. P.S. I am in my 3rd or maybe 4th week. Is the diarrhea also normal?

A simple blood check is all it takes. I am a Nurse and also had Covid. Prior to this Dx I was blaming my busy schedule or just getting older and then Covid. Theresa, This is what she wrote and the lab notified her each time she removed a healthy gland. "We" looked at the upper left gland and it looked mildly enlarged, so we removed it. We waited for the lab. An hour later the lab informed us that we removed a healthy gland, so we proceeded to the next gland that also looked mildly enlarged. An hour later, the lab told us that this gland also was healthy, this was repeated for the next. We then looked at the remaining gland and it looked healthy, so we left it.

@@seashoregal2769 That is awful. I am sorry but not shocked in today's world of medicine. I would get another Doctor's opinion. All of mine were bad but he left part of one not sure why they do that. I had a very good surgeon. I also had to have my thymus removed. Between being sleepy post op and my anxiety I could barely remember everything he said. My pathology was negative thank God. I never had the miracle of feeling like a million bucks like everyone else. My follow up appointment was with a PA who was an airhead and I didn't learn much there either. I have a Dr who I work with that also had a similar surgery and she was always checking on me and she kept saying give it time but personally I saw no miracles. Many years ago I had chemo and although grateful for being cured my body was never the same and I felt like all of my organs took a hit. So I do everything I can to stay healthy and feel good but it's a full time job and can get discouraging. All I can say is maybe see another Dr and get their opinion. Good Luck. I feel your pain and frustration.

@@seashoregal2769 There's a Hormono Hyperparathyroid version where calcium reads high but PTH reads normal. It's simply because a seb set of people have hypersensitive parathyroid glands so their readings are never as obvious as other people. The glands are just as dysfunctional. The UCLA videos explaining the variants explains the types well. Also LarianMD.

He is absolutely correct! I had an excellent doctor who caught this at my first visit with her. And sadly I had this condition for about 30 years. Some of the missed signs for me was after never having a cavity I had a ton all at once. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis when I was in excellent health exercising, eating very healthy, I walked regularly, and the kicker to this being off for me is that I’m very bottom on the risk list for osteoporosis. I’d fall asleep at red lights, my excellent memory was gone, AND looking back over my blood tests for decades (retired military wife so had my complete medical records), I had consistent SLIGHTLY elevated calcium levels. I had the effected parathyroid removed and IMMEDIATELY felt 💯% better no osteopenia, no more foggy memory, no falling asleep at red lights. Thank you Dr. Ken Berry for taking care of folks. 😘

In a way it appears that Doctors have a "not my job" way of diagnosing & treatment, but what has happened is that "The SPECIALIST" has taken over the medical Health yindustry. They have divided the human body into parts. Therefore being able to assess symptoms to arrive at a suspect, potential illness does not exist. We see "Part Specialist " referred or not referred to by our Internist or General Family Doctor. The patient has to do research before going to a Physician or Specialist. Being an informed patient.

My mom has hyperparathyroidism - she had a bunch of symptoms generally called "groans, bones, stones and psych overtones." Plus she had high calcium levels on multiple blood labs. So I asked her doc to check her PTH (parathyroid hormone), which was high. Hyperparathyroidism confirmed. Problem is, surgery is the recommended fix for it (removing the growths causing it), and mom doesn't want the risk. It could fix many of her problems and significantly improve her life but I understand her worry over surgery.

The surgery is a lot different than it used to be. When my mom had it in the 90s her lung collapsed and she was hospitalized for about five days. Presently I believe its outpatient and requires just a small incision. Much simpler. But I guess it's a matter of weighing risk vs reward.

Thank you so much for addressing this issue. I commented on one of your other videos about covering it. I knew before you spoke the words what disease you were going to cover. Yeah yeah yeah!!! I had this for years undiagnosed after having one major kidney stone at fifty, the same time I was suffering with mental illness, and also had an STV discovered. This went on for six years, all while being put on many sorts of psych meds that did nothing to help. My calcium bounced around for several years unnoticed all because they were still in range. Finally at a 10.7 reading was it flagged and the dr tested my pth. Yes it was elevated, but was told not to worry and don’t go googling anything. Yeah right, that’s exactly what I did and I diagnosed myself and found my own surgeon who specialized in endocrinology and insisted on further testing. It took 6 months until I was proven right and had an adenoma removed. The thing is I’m not alone and thousands of women have suffered unnecessarily for years and years without people in the medical community believing them. So thank you again from the bottom of my heart for touching on this debilitating health subject!❤️

Katie T Be happy to. We are talking back in the 80’s - Dr. Larrian Gillespie, a Urologist from L.A., was doing some groundbreaking work on a not very well known badder disease. Out of desperation, I decided to make an appointment with her to see if this might be what I had. It was. There weren’t many treatment options at this time, but she informed me that my diet had much to do with the symptoms I was experiencing. IC symptoms feel much like a never-ending bladder infection. Once I focused on the elimination of those foods and drinks that were acidic and would trigger symptoms, I slowly began to recover. Looking back, it was likely close to what is now called an anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine diet. Dr Gillespie turned out to be a bit controversial, but never the less she pointed me in the right direction, and I am grateful. Her book was called, “My Body My Diet”.

Thank you for this talk regarding the para thyroid group ( 4 ). My girlfriend moved to N.H.. Over time, she had gained weight and felt horrible in general. Numerous previous tests were inconclusive. Lab work here showed that her parathyroid was dying and had to be removed. The doctor said the para thyroid was a major player in traffic controlling the glands. And that four para thyroids were safely nestled away. After my friend's surgery, the second para thyroid stepped forward and started working! It drained a huge amount of fluid and the change in health was dramatic! That was many years ago and I never forgot the ordeal we went through, considering how challenging it was just to finally identify the problem. She got her life back!

An endocrinologist diagnosed it when she saw my blood calcium level at 12.5. The parathyroid was the size of a golf ball. This video is so very important. Thank you Dr Berry.

With parathyroid problems there is so much calcium deposited in your body the kidneys flush it all out. That’s why you have frequent urinating or kidney problems. This leaves your body running on no calcium until parathyroid is removed. It will then go back to normal and if you have suffered bone loss that can be helped with glucosamine.

I know about hyperparathyroidism because my husband had it and had to have his two left glands removed. Gary Shandling passed away from this at the same time my husband had this. The hospital I took him to would not do an ultrasound on his parathyroid and Endocrinologists in Phoenix do not do rounds in hospitals. I was his advocate and pushed until I could get him a fast appointment then to the surgeons, then took him to Banner Teaching Hospital here after being in three times to other Banner Hospitals admired three times. He got operated on and was back to normal after coming out of surgery. It was a mess with Banner and I will never use Banner services again. He almost died, it took me over two months of fighting with Drs and they would avoid me in the hospital because I had read all the pubmed papers on it and they had cardiologists and nephrologists wanting him to be their patient instead of telling us to go to an Endocrinologist. Scared me.

When any labworks comes back and the results are in the "normal" range, most doctors do not look into it any farther. It has always seemed so odd to me. The doctors blame most symptoms on getting older or fibromyalgia which I think was created for conditions they can not pinpoint just to ease the patient's mind to receive a diagnosis.....so sad.

I am 55 and I have been feeling bad for years and have been feeling horrible horrible horrible .....with 1000 symptoms....... for 1 year now, right around when my menopause started. I went through some horrible horrible months......then I had a slight hyperparathyroidism blood test result......and I started to research. YES.....all the symptoms I had were from hyperparathyroidism. I had to understand all the things on my own. The docs were of NO help!!!! No thyroid specialists. No kidney specialist. No family doctor. No ER doctors. For them the result were not BAD ENOUGH YET!!! And feeling like I was going to faint/die soon....daily......every minute of the day......for 12 months......that was not enough for them......that was ALL IN MY HEAD!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The KZbin Medical doctors and the KZbin Medical Experts on this and the KZbin SURGEONS........explained it to me. (NORMO-CALCIUM-HYPERPARATHYROIDISM) THEN somebody somewhere said: Do not go for the surgery.....try BORON first. And so I did. On day 3 on the supplement I started to feel better. I am now on day 29 of the BORON supplement.......and I can not even explain how good I feel. I have my life back. i could start to cry as I write this because I remember how aweful I felt. I suffered so much physically. And I suffered so much mentally. The BORON PILLS gave me a second life. No more physical symptoms and no more unexplainable depression. I did not have a life for such a long time. Now I DO HAVE a life and also a future. And I will be utterly disgusted for the rest of my life with the medical system (as if I had not been already before). But these experiences really broke the camel's back. They should be so ashamed. They do not know anything about anything.........and happily tell you you are crazy.........just because THEY are living in this sea of ignorance.

I have all but 1 of these signs, and being told there is nothing wrong with me. This explains so much and I have already forwarded it to my physician. I've been in keto 3yrs now and have lossed a significant amount of weight, but lost my way in covid. I'm back strict keto now, but have had full hysterectomy due to prolapse and I am so stalled right now and experiencing horrible things and being told maybe I am not a good person to be on keto. That keto was most likely my issue. We both know that is not my reason for what these symptoms are trying to say. So, thank you. Seriously thank you.

Thyroid, other vitamin/minerals, adrenal, cortisol levels showed no problems. It might be, like you mentioned, within what my doctor feels is acceptable when perhaps they are not and this is why I still don't feel well, had to give up work and surviving on my savings. He did say it must just be chronic fatigue. I will attempt to reach out to my doctor again and hope these tests could answer why I feel so unwell and useless to be honest. I personally know several men who went to the ER with heart problems and they all tested deficient in magnesium and vitamin D. So I and my husband both take magnesium, vitamin D3, and vitamin K2 (which guides the calcium in your body where it needs to go so it doesn't block your arteries).

Thank you Dr Berry. I'm seeing for 5 years an Endocrinologist. Diagnosed with real bad Grave's disease. Hyperthyroidism. I take 1 pill a day of Metholmazole. But all of a sudden last week my check-up showed im in the hyper state again. My TSH was very very low. So he upped the medication to another half added to 1 pill. He also noticed my cakcium levels has been a little high for awhile & my Alkaline Phosphate too. Which my primary Dr. Never said nothing about it. ? I hv a thyroid nodule he's keeping eye on; with ultrasound & had grown but very very tiny bit. I also hv an adenoma on my adrenal gland left one. So, more frequent blood test my Endocrinologist said. Right now every 3 months. He also diagnosed me now with Hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism. 😮 thank you for this info. You're exactly right. My calciun & Alkaline Phosphate is high. I also hv sĵodrens disease & it's affecting my intestines; digestion, & of course eliminating. My skin, hair & nails too. BOTH thyroid disease Graves & Sĵodrens is a MONSTER 👾 I STAY SO SICK. I eat well & healthy and lots if water, vitamins, organic foods, no processed foods , no fast foods, hardly no fried foods. Baked meats, lots of green veggies & fruits, lower sugar intake. And i still feel bad all the time. 24/7. 😢 no matter what i do? 61 but feel 91. Doing a full workup now for the hyperparathyroidism. High calcium, kidney stone, severer anxiety and depression! I have diabetes, so I thought how I felt daily was based on that. My A1C was 12 after all! After going on Trulicity last year, my A1C dropped to 6.0 in 5 months. I still felt awful. Tired, brain fog, constant stomach issues, and I'd broken a bone with no idea why. When my calcium was checked, it was 11.9. It was supposed to be 9.5 with a limit of 10. The bad guy? One of my parathyroid glands was 1130 mg (normal size is 60 mg). After having it removed, I began to see improvements in my brain, body, and stamina. While I still have loads of problems from not dealing with my diabetes well or properly, my PTH gland coming out made a huge difference. Easy to check it out. Get it done! Oh, and I'm 51 years old.

This is a problem in public healthcare, you can’t really ask for anything, you get what you’re given. Because they are discounting possibilities. They have no clue and they do a math solution. And lets give meds and they are so “worry about drugs and alcohol in our country”. Meanwhile Doctors are the cost of so many addictive humans. From young, they have been popping pills. If someone is feeling sad or devastated is considered bad and they need to be in psychiatric treatment. In reality those are only unfortunately events that leads to sadness. Hello, no reason to cover them up. They are totally normal. I have to stop because the system is toxic and smart people with no money are treated like they are crazy or dumb because they can actually make their own conclusions. I lost respect.

Dr. Berry your videos are pure gold. I am a 53-year-YOUNG!!! post-menopausal woman with so many of these symptoms. The problem is I've never tripped the parathyroid diagnosis criteria. That said I've been using BHRT on and off. Question: Can using BHRT (or HRT) hide or mask a parathyroid disorder? My PTH has been up and down based on 4 labs over the course of 5 years as follows - all figures using Quest Labs (USA): 52-43-22-41. Calcium was consistently at 9.9 and recently dropped to 8.9. The one time my ionized calcium was checked it came in low (red). Is this more indicative of hormonal imbalance? Did some research where thyroid also has an impact on the parathyroid gland. My TSH has been steadily climbing up from 1.8 in 2015 to 3.7 most recently. Thoughts?

It took 10 years for me to be diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis even though I kept tell my doctor my symptoms and my thyroid was slightly swollen. He kept telling me the labs were coming back normal and they were. He should’ve sent me to a specialist anyway but the hospital fight this. I suffered for years. The other complication was the fact I was also going through menopause which mimics Hashimoto’s. It wasn’t until I started to develop a goiter that I was finally referred to endocrinologist and diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. Once I was on medication my life changed for the better.

Agreed on the labs required. Also a full kidney function test. To see whether the calcium build-up is a kidney problem or a parathyroid or Vit D problem. Hyperparathyroidism can also be caused by hyperplasia or where certain medications have changed the PTH set-point. This is an awful disease, much worse than thyroid disease. For some reason, difficult to get treated and not considered serious until the levels are way out of range (but even slight elevation of calcium is a red flag and should be taken seriously).

Thank you so much! Thank God I have an awesome NP who tests for these insufficiencies! I got up and checked my lab work and sure enough it’s on there and my levels are normal.

5years ago my GP tested by blood because my calcium markers were way off. I had osteoporosis diagnosis for a few years but no flags were raised. He found out that I had parathyroid disease. I didn’t know we had these glands (4 tiny rice sized ones that hang around the thyroid). This condition caused my body to pretty much deplete my bones and now I have advanced osteoporosis in parts of my body. The surgeon was able to find the one gland that was acting up and remove it. Since then I always get that special blood test. Anyway glad I found your videos. Thank you for the valuable information. Hoping I can rebuild my bone density. If you have osteoporosis have this blood test done.

In 1995 at age 43 I visited several doctors who diagnosed me with arthritis, put me on Tramadol. It had just come out, safe drug for pain and you positivity couldn’t become addicted to it. Another doctor said fibromyalgia. I would at times forget how to get home when I went to the store. I practically lived in the bathroom having to urinate many times day and night. Then in 2000 I went to visit my daughter 2000 miles away and my blood pressure spiked 200/120. It was a small town upstate NY. I saw the local doctor who gave me blood pressure medicine and did blood test. He called me next day and ask if I was drinking a lot of milk or taking calcium tabs. I said no so he said my calcium was very high. He sent me to endocrinologist then a surgeon who said I had parathyroid problem. Surgery was done and they removed one parathyroid which are normally size of pea but mine was size of a walnut he said. It took a couple months but I got feeling much better. No groggy symptoms no living in the bathroom. He said I had had the problem about 5 years before he saw me. At 48 I had bones of a 70 year old. So ask for a parathyroid blood test.

Wow !! Bizarre timing !! I have been diagnosed with this but only by the grace of God that my naturopathic doctor along with Dr Naiman, found these things and put them all together!! My former MD NEVER picked up on it....waste of time and money going to a common MD ! Thank you for putting this video out !!! I now check these items on my clients labs. Next is the Dexiscan to see if surgery is needing to happen.....I’m fasting and have eliminated all forms of calcium, increased potassium and electrolytes tremendously as the muscle cramps have been awful I’ll keep you updated if like ! I hope everyone listens to you on this as it’s a REALITY !!
