Arkansas' Lauren Gregory's massive anchor leg wasn't enough to pull ahead of Stanford as the Cardinal win the Distance Medley Relay at the 2023 NCAA indoor track and field championships with a time of 10:56.34. Watch the full race here.

Gregory has such insane range. Mountain vertical runner, insane 5k, and a 4:31 anchor here. Insane mental strength

That was an insane leg from the Arkansas anchor but hats off to Stanford. Whittaker ran a gutsy leg to seal the win. That takes physical and mental strength to push through like that with a runner bearing down on you with nothing to lose.

Irene Griggs out of Morgantown, WV is gonna add lots of strength to that Stanford team next year!

Why can’t producers figure out how to show the other finishers instead of focusing on the after race collapse of those who have finished? Production would be better if the entire event were shown and there is interest in those who do not finish first.

Lauren Gregory’s 4:31 would have had 6 seconds taken off for altitude, so she essentially ran a 4:25 altitude-adjusted mile!

Lauren’s 4:25 mile altitude adjustment would put her at the 2nd or 3rd fastest indoor miles by a collegiate runner if it was an open mile, just behind Katelyn Tuohy’s 4:24 or Jenny Barringer’s 4:25! Of course Tuohy ran a 4:23 split in a DMR too. Where can we see top collegiate times that are part of relays to compare them?

What a brilliant competition the DMR is! The length of the race allows plenty of opportunity for placement to change and change again. Even if one team gains an early lead to watch it being run down on the anchor leg is so exciting. One anomaly is that while at baton changes most athletes break towards the centre after releasing the baton, one or two break towards the outside potentially interfering with opponent's exchange in the outside lanes. That can't be right and speaks of poor thinking on somebody's part or it's a deliberate tactic of interference!

What happened to Washington's team - did someone get hurt?

It would seem the coaches messed up Washington. "Washington ran three of the four women (albeit in a different order) from the squad that set the NCAA record of 10:46.62 back on February 3 at Boston University. Anna Gibson ran the open mile instead of the DMR anchor. Yet tonight’s race could not have gone more differently. The race started poorly as UW handed off in last at the first exchange, more than four seconds behind."

NC State sacrificed this race for good coaching reasons. Put any of NC State’s middle distance people in the race and anchor with Tuohy and it’s game over. NC State ran 10:48 in February with Tuohy. Stanford ran 10:56 (at altitude). Great effort by Stanford by does anyone doubt that Tuohy in her present form wouldn’t have run down Stanford? Or Gregory (although she is quite on-form right now). I don’t. Kudos to Stanford and Arkansas in any case! Side note. Note that in men’s DMR, the slow teams yielded the inside lane to the fast teams. The women did not. I’ll never understand why. Let the fast teams have the inside lane(s). Please.

Good point about NC State. I'm anxiously waiting for the 3000 at 7:00PM EDT to see what Katelyn does. Mercy and Hilda did her a big favor yesterday pacing the 5000 at a crawl instead of going full gas. Tonight the 3000 is packed with talent. Besides Tuohy, there's Hilda and Mercy, Ceili, Olivia, Kelsey, Taylor, Sam Bush; just to name a few. KT says she's been working on her 'patience' and running tactically, but with a field like this the race could blow open anytime, really. If Tuohy does win she will be first runner to make the 3/5 double at this meet since Karissa Schweizer in 2018.

I used to think so too, but indoors, you put a lot more effort into running the legs on the inside. It is incredibly painful running longer than about 600-800 meters at 4:00 mile pace on the inside, and the 400 and 800 go well below that pace. One lane out is not much better, but hardly any longer. I've run and won many distance races running in lane 2,

If they want to make these events popular, they should hire horse racing announcers instead of these idiots that tell you nothing.
