Women's Prize for Non-Fiction Predictions!

Hi everyone, in today's video I will be making an attempt to predict some books that might appear on the Women's Prize for Non-Fiction Longlist.
Apologies for getting Cat Bohannon's name wrong in the video, and for adding a 'the' to the title of Grief is for People.
The actual longlist will be announced on 15th February by ‪@Womens_Prize‬.
For the second year running I am cohosting the Women's Prize Plodalong with ‪@GemofBooks‬ and ‪@CharlieBrookReads‬ #wpplodalong which will run alongside the whole of the Women's Prize season- this is an unofficial readalong of the prizes. We will be hosting live shows to talk about the books, hopefully with some special booktuber guests.
Our opening show is the day after the announcement of the Non-fiction longlist and will be a discussion of our reaction to the list. Join us for this on 16th February at 8pm on ‪@GemofBooks‬ channel.

Eve is something i think sounds perfect for the women's prize. Maybe the Polly Atkin memoir some of us fail will make it too. This is an interesting list, can't wait to see the direction. The judges go.

I agree! That’s probably the one where as soon as I heard of it I thought we would see it on the list. Oh the Polly Atkin sounds brilliant, ever since I filmed I keep finding great stuff that I missed. I feel like there are whole genres I didn’t even find a book for so I fully expect the real list to be full of surprises.

This is the second non fiction prediction video I've seen so far, and both have had the caveat that the booktuber has not read any of the books. I think this probably shows how valuable the women's prize for non fiction will be for women non fiction writers. I have read Wifedom which was very good. I'm excited for this prize.

Whether or not any of these make the list, it's brilliant to hear about so many non fiction books!! I feel like this is going to be my year of non fiction 😊 I can see the Naomi Klein book on the list. I hope they're not all 500+ pages though, or people won't get through very many!

I'm so excited to be seeing your list! Eve and Divided sound so good! Hope one of them makes it! Doppelganger and Emperor of Rome haha bogth that came right off my list after making my last selection because they sounded a bit dry, but we'll see! It's so exciting to see what the judges pick - I didn't see the panel included multiple historians haha. Though to me Divide Might and Emperor of Rome don't sound very relevant, but maybe that's not a criteria! I think The Chain is likely to make it, but it sounds like a tough read! Space books is not one I included in my list, so very interesting!

This is true, the historical ones could be seen as less relevant, but I still have a hunch we will see a well respected historian or classicist on the list. Maybe. 🤷‍♀️ The Chain does sound like a very tough read. I can’t wait to see what surprises are in store for us in a couple of weeks! 🤩

im trying not to get excited about the non-fiction prize because i dont read non-fiction, but i cant help it! thanks for this video Alice- id have no idea what would be eligible! Also the judges for the non-fiction prize look so much better (and more qualified!?) than the fiction judges!! 😭

Oops, sorry about that! I’m not a big non-fiction reader but I’m excited to see if this changes my mind. Coincidentally I have also been really enjoying the non-fic I have been reading lately. The judges do seem like they’ll pick a good variety. 😊

This is amazing Alice! I never even had a tickle of a thought to predict the 1st WP NF longlist. Kudos to you for diving into the deep unknown! I love a lot of your choices. Doppelgänger sounds like it’s in with a good shot and likewise with the Mary Beard. I love Samantha Irby but Quietly Hostile was my least favourite…. I just can’t cope with bodily fluids 🤢😅 You have chosen such a great list and all of them have perked up my ears ❤

Natalie Haynes and Mary Beard are both good shouts though I think Haynes edges it. I am a huge fan of both and have both books on my tbr. Mary Beard is super accessible but the content being about the emperors of Rome doesn’t strike me as best Women’s Prize-y, though I think she has been a brilliant and prominent female writer who deserves a nomination for that alone. Not the End of the World sounds great as we need some hope. I’ve just started Monsters as well which I’ve been meaning to read as part of my fandom reading. I think Laura Bates will make the list…

@@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf turns out she doesn’t have a recent non-fiction - the book I was thinking of is Fix the System, Not the Women but it’s 2022! 😂She does have a new fiction out though I see which I’m definitely adding to the wish list as it’s a feminist Arthurian retelling which I bloody love!

Emperor of Rome by Mary Beard is today's audible daily deal in the US, it's $4.99 if you want to let anyone know because it might get nominated for the Women's Prize. I bought it and it might be on sale in the UK too I don't know

I really enjoyed Wifedom but it’s been quite divisive as there’s quite a lot of speculation/ fictional elements in amongst the fiction as Funder tells the story as it might have happened. Philippa Gregory’s book is on my TBR.

That’s interesting to know, maybe it won’t be listed if it’s possibly fiction as well as fact. I’ve got it out of the library, so if I get time I might pick it up. The more I read about the Philippa Gregory, the more I wanted to read it. 😊📚

@@lizh9497 interesting. I liked Animal Farm when I read it but was disappointed with 1984, I think I had overhyped it too much for myself and was sad I didn’t love it.
