My favourite is from the Seoul Olympics. It was the women's 500m speed skating competition. Lee Sang Hwa from South Korea was going after her 3rd gold medal and was edged out by Nao Kodaira of Japan. During the celebratory skate around Lee was crying and Nao came to her and hugged her and they skated together. I later found out they were good friends. It was a beautiful example of how rivals can be friends.

They couldn't have spent a bit more effort in cleaning that pool? It looks like a lake!
@jasminejohnston6393
@jasminejohnston6393 4 жыл бұрын
Well they can’t just put chlorine in the pool because chlorine stings the divers’ eyes and that’s dangerous because they need to be able to see where they’re swimming in order to get out of the pool. Besides, you can partially blame the design of the venue too. This is why Olympic pools shouldn’t be in outdoor venues...

@@jasminejohnston6393 true but there also have been international diving pools that is still the same as the indoor ones Example: Seen per Tom Daley vlogs where he went for international competition... Outdoor diving... And still clear as day unlike this one

Apparently the pool _was_ chlorinated, but then a contractor dumped a bunch of hydrogen peroxide in there to clean it. This neutralized the chlorine and allowed algae to bloom.

@@jasminejohnston6393 actually most diving boards are in the same (heavily chlorinated) pools as the swimmers and water polo teams. They maybe separated at higher level meets (worlds, Olympics, etc.) But for most it's all the same pool.

It's amazing how the athlete's bodies who partake in this level of sport adapt to their item. The swimmer's shoulders are quite broad, and they have smaller hips, these divers have bodies that are as rectangular as possible, ect.

My son went to the "#1 Beijing Technical Sports School" (were the Chinese top swimmers and divers train). Interesting fact: The first time a diver does the 10 meter everyone stops to look. Olympics gold medalists, trainers, children. And everyone claps if it goes well.

Question: forgive me, I'm not familiar with diving as a sport. What are the athletes doing when they're not diving, when they're splashing themselves with water? Are they supposed to be completely dry before each dive? Sorry if these are silly questions, I was curious as to why they were splashing themselves.
@caitlingerard4161

I just looked it up, it is so keep their muscles warm and lose before each dive and then they also dry off after to avoid losing grip to avoid losing points for small errors from slipping
