Djibouti is a country that barely can afford clean water or food. She is probably the best player there. She got a chance to represent her nation and she was very proud of doing it. At the opening ceremonies and even attending the closing, Hassan Farrah was all smiles. She made it to the Olympics, something you won't do. She was happy. Obviously she wasn't the best. She had a good time and was proud to be a Djibouti athlete. Give her respect.

Women need empowerment in these Islamic countries. Too often they are seen to be good mothers and help raise the kids and satisfy their husbands. Things need to change. I'm sure there are many talented muslim women who's talents are nowhere to be seen due to religious culture. I'd love to see things change...i doubt it'll ever happen because personally I don't think women in the Muslim world are prepared to do what the feminists of old did in the west. However if that day ever comes I as a man will happily salute them on. This poor girl was humiliated. Things need to change

Starlin Abdi - I agree - this is what the Olympics is about. We should be questioning the "Brazilian" athlete - where is she from (I'm guessing somewhere in Asia, and she is not good enough to make their team) ? Do they have no table tennis players in Brazil ? I support one or two young female Somali students in my main job and I wish them every success. It is great to see.

Oh, OK. Sorry. I didn't know that. It's just that in Europe there are so many Chinese and Japanese players who represent other countries, having moved there recently, which I think robs the countries of development of their players..

Respect for the Brazilian player here, though she knew she was in full control throughout, she at no point tried to level down her game or mock her opponent. I think this is one lesson we should all learn from her. Mocking someone does no good, respect all and move on in life no matter what.

She's not that bad, just way outclassed by world class players. If you've never played at that level it's very hard to adjust to the serves. Then you try to get your serves perfect so they don't get attacked and hit half of yours into the net. She can play though, when the Brazilian player eases up on her serves at the end she can legit attack them and score some points. I'm sure she can beat most commenters on this video :)

yes but she's the #120 woman in the world. by comparison, if you're in the US the top women in the country are around that world ranking, and the top women in the US are only a bit off the top men. these players could make a solid club level player look foolish, and your average club player is way way ahead of your average basement player, which is where i'm assuming most of these people that think they can beat her are.

Yeah, I think you're quite right. In table tennis, nervous tension and psychology is very important. I suppose she's not used to be in such an environment. On a way representing your country, in the other the mediatic stake . We have to remember that in many countries of East Africa, for people especially women, life is quite hard. Even in France, lot of people don't consider TT as a sport. Most of time, they have not much money for their effort. I played 10 years in Germany where even in a small town you have everything to train.

Hassan Farah isn't bad, but she clearly isn't at the Olympic level. There are many conditions or variables unknown, but you cannot attribute her failed serves and many times not even attempting to return the ball as results of her country's poverty. Perhaps she has the potential to do better, but at the moment, it's not fair for her to be forced to compete at such a competitive level against players who have trained at very early ages. She is brave for willing to represent her country, but watching this; it seems like it's an embarrassment both to Hassan Farah herself and to her opponents.

Hey internet geniuses, Brazil is home to the biggest population of Japanese outside Japan, so she isn't "Brazilian", she IS Brazilian. Unlike the rest of your countries, there is no "pure Brazilian identity" we're a big melting pot of different people, so being black, white, arabic or asiatic has nothing to do with being Brazilian or not.

So many derogatory comments towards Yasmin. Djibouti obviously doesn't have the resources and funding to put towards sport like other countries, such as Brazil, so of course Yasmin is going to struggle against competitors with such advantages. This doesn't take away Djibouti's right to represent themselves at the Olympics and Yasmin's privilege of representing her own country, which a lot of people in this comment section really do not understand. Very, very sad.

You're right. Born in Brazil. In other words, 100% Brazilian. Or do you discriminate against Brazilians of African and Portuguese descent as well? Her name is Caroline.

BoomersGold Some kids have been born on a plane, or on a boat, what are they? If you're raised like a Japanese you can barely consider yourself to be a ret al Brazilian, yea, perhaps that's racism, but that's just the way it is. If you're born as a boy, you aren't allowed to join the olympics as a girl either, no matter what you do.

lol. We're talking nationality here, buddy, not ethnicity. She's 100% Brazilian. If you're Asian and you were born in the states, you are 100% an American, like Tiger Woods (who's half black, half asian) or Daniel Inouye. If you're African and born in the USA, that makes you 100% American. Like Obama or Michael Jordan. If you're Irish, but you were born in Australia, that makes you 100% Australian, like former prime minister Julia Gillard. Being born on a plane or a boat has nothing to do with this. LOL. She's not a refugee, mate. She was born IN Brazil and raised there.

This comment section is filled with people that are racist and making jokes about this. Being in the Olympics from a country with barely any recognition that's poor is very huge accomplishment indeed, and the Djibouti athlete must be very proud she made it even if she lost. You guys are making fun of her because of her lack of skill and religion, but to honest at least she made it into the Olympics than all you guys. I just got angry looking at all the jokes about her religion in the comments and you guys should respect her religion and not be making fun of it as a joke. Like what's wrong with you guys.

Most successful 3 nations from London 2012 Olympics by total gold medals were USA, China and UK. Muslim countries always do terrible in Olympics. Not 1 made it into top 10 by gold medals totals. Only 1 made it in to top 20 - Kazakhstan. Only 3 made it in top 40 - Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkey Many Muslim majority nations not even 1 gold medal!! - Pakistan, Afghanistan, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Somalia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Tajikstan, Lebanon, Algeria, Iraq, Iran, Bangladesh, Brunei, Gambia, Oman, Yemen, Jordan, Maldives, Niger, Sudan etc.... Why so many negative views?

28 sports being played.. most of them have litterally 0 participants from the midle east or north africa... like sailing, and other unpopular sports... world record holder at 1500 is moroccan. and most long distance runners in the top are muslims... the usa as muslim athletes, same goes for china and even russia... so yeah. dont compare big countries with hundreds of millions inhabitants to small country's that are pretty poor and rarely play most of the sports that are in the olympic to begin with.

Something suspicious is going on, as the Djiboutian athlete got in by Invitation. They had 69 athletes qualified and needed a 70th somewhere, but surely there are better athletes than her? No disrespect, but she doesn't seem nearly as skilled, only getting 8 points in the whole match off an athlete who lost in straight games in the next round.
