I love the fact that most of the tournaments i watched Cuba was always down 2 sets, and then proceeds to whoop their enemies asses on the latter sets. To play never losing focus and determination with that pressure and then snatch victory at the end goes to show the hearts of true champions.

Russian coach Nikolay Karpol. He produced 2 gold medals in 1980 and 1988 and produced the silver medals in 1992, 2000 and 2004 for a total of five Olympic medals. When he resigned from Russia WVT Russia never had podium finish after 2004 in Olympics. He might act like that different from most of the coaches but it worked with girls in Russia. Btw- he is still alive today at age of 82.

Fuera de la isla juegan mas de 25 mujeres en las ligas de Italia, Brasil, Japón, Turquía, Rusia, Puerto Rico, etc. y que la federación cubana NO permite que jueguen por la selección nacional. Después de esta generación dorada, en Atenas 2004 se ganó bronce y 4tas en Beijing 2008. Alto seguido, 3 4tos lugares consecutivos en torneos Grand Prix, plata en una copa del mundo y campeonas panamericnas en Rio 2007 , ganandole 3x2 al equipo brasileño que meses después se coronó campeón olímpico. CUBA no decayó en el volley, simplemente sus Federación y gobierno son un desastre. Igual pasa en el masculino, Leal, Simón, Juantorena y León estan considerados entre los mejores 15 de todo el mundo y sin embargo, excepto Simón, los demas no pueden representar a Cuba. Por esa razón, Leal representa a Brasil, León a Polonia y Juantorena a Italia.

Lioubov Sokolova is the most complete Russian female volleyball player I have ever seen. She's a great open and opposite hitter. She's also utilized as a middle quicker. She's running bicycle in cuatro and cinco positions. She's also doing back-row hits. She's one of the better receivers and blockers on the team and she's doing jump serve, too. Plus, she's incredibly beautiful as well. I can't think of any Russian female volleyball player in recent years that could come close to her talent.

@@goodbyestranger6824 la FIVB no siempre le da el título a la persona correcta, en varias ocasiones el premio va para otro y otra jugadora y ellos deciden a quien dárselo, en mi opinión el premio estaba entre Mireya Luis y Regla Bell, ser jugador de zona 4 es más difícil que ser central, Regla Bell y Mireya son las que tenía más responsabilidad. Incluso las mismas jugadoras de Cuba saben que ese título le pertenecía a Mireya.

We all know each other since we were in 7th grade because of the Cuban structure and I am telling you that the physical training we all got no one in the world got it. Including the white cuban women they were super strong. But I get you... We are black...hahhahahah We practiced 3 hours in the court and 1 hour of conditioning in the morning and same in the afternoon. That was after 12th grade but since 7th grade we practice 4 hours daily from Monday to Saturday. We slept in dormitories since them. going home just in the weekends returning Sunday night. That is the reason that they became super strong more than the color of their skin

My favorite group with Mireya Luis, Regla Bell , M Carvajal and company was the best up to 1999, NO LIE. 2000 team was alright since Bell, Costa Torres were still there, LOL. CUBA was the BEST nobody could beat them. The girls were so strong, excellent and very smart athletes on the Volleyball Court. Mireya Luis is and will be always my favorite volleyball player in the world the second is of course myself. :)

Y Cuba que es? acaso un desconocido en este deporte. Un poco de historia, desde los 60s Cuba y Usa se disputan la hegemonía del voley en América, hasta que en 1978 Cuba se consagra campeona mundial. Luego de un recambio generacional, Cuba es subcampeon mundial en Checoslovaquia 1986. Boicotea las olimpiadas de Los Angeles y Seul 88 pero gana las copas del mundo 1989 y 1991 en Japon. Nuevamente es campeón mundial de Brasil 1994 y Japón 1998, asi como obtiene los oros olímpicos en Barcelona 1992 y Atlanta 1996. Osea que de raro tiene que una potencia mundial derrote a otra potencia mundial. Lo que paso con cuba despues es un tema netamente político, pero de que talento hay en cuba para que vuelva a ser lo que fue antes, lo hay.

For TV/screen fans is best visible and recognizable the white ball... Since 1998 volleyball watching on screen is huge problem... TV tries to solve it by slow motion replays, but fans miss the direct, first experience... All balls which FIVB and Mikasa introduced in this period, have functioned more or less as a Newton disk - when quick and rotates - disappeared on screens... However this ball had at least small parts white... Yellow and blue/green are against optic rules...

Embora a Rússia tenha perdido, acho impressionante como sempre a escola russa de vôlei fica décadas após décadas entre as grandes equipes, seja como na forma antiga União Soviética ou como Federação Russa, a escola russa com certeza é uma das melhores neste esporte, a história do Vôlei Mundial cruza sempre com a história do Vôlei russo. É lamentável que ambas as equipes não possam participar das competições como a Rússia, ou não estar na sua melhor fase, como Cuba, são equipes elevam o nível do volei junto com Japão, China, Estados Unidos, Brasil, Itália, Sérvia...

I remember when I was a kid, the Cuban team always won the volleyball tournament I used to watch whose name I can't remember anymore and Russia was always second. I don't remember the tournament but I still remember the names of some of the players. I remember the Cuban team looking like they were just naturally stronger and faster, and everyone played so well. Pak na pak pa pag pumalo.

Cuba made history. Although Russia was denied of the gold medal, they were very strong in that era (iron curtain/wall). Cuba just had the heart to win. Gamova was still a baby in this era. But still ❤.
