My first video in what will be a large series on the clothing worn by women in Medieval and Renaissance Ireland. This video touches on the dresses worn during the period and a little bit on headwear which will be an upcoming video of its own.

Super helpful thank you! I’m American but much of my family ancestors come from Ireland and I wanted to do a tribute to them on our channel with my daughters coming up here soon but I have a lot of trouble finding resources on what traditional Irish clothing actually looked like. This is the fourth of your videos I have watched now and I feel much more educated on 1 - why it’s hard to find what authentic traditional Irish clothing was like, and 2 - through your channel and others like it, what they actually DID wear. Thank you!

I'm late to the game on this one but here's a reference to women wearing saffron léinte in 1618 from an Englishman named Thomas Gainsford: "Their apparel is a mantle to sleep in, and that on the ground or some rushes or flags: a thick gathered smock with wide sleeves graced with bracelets and crucifixes about their necks: They wear linen rowels about their heads of divers fashions: in Ulster carelessly wound about: In Conach like Bishop's mitres, a very stately attire, and once prohibited by statute: in Munster resembling a thick Cheshire Cheese. Their smocks are saffroned against vermin; for they wear them three months together" I believe the statutes from Henry VIII's time also mentioned women's clothes being coloured saffron.

Would the children's clothing be a miniature version of the adults, or just simply a tunic (kids can be messy) as it'd be easier to clean?

There is one drawing showing a young boy dressed in the same attire as men. For children it would often be lower quality eg less expensive dye but the same overall design.

Another great video. Irish women clothing is a highly underrepresented topic. I wonder how accurate the Grace O'Malley statue is. Though Grace was a Irish noble of the 16th century she was a pirate and probably wore more functional clothing.

I mean I am by no means an expert sailor but sailing in pants seems like a solid option to me. It is also hugely under appreciated so many interesting and beautiful styles.

I do personally believe the léine was only for nobles and the warrior class and people are mixing up undertunics with Léine's. Amazing video as always man. picked up a ton of great info.

Yes its hard to discern as all of the information comes from British sources.

Nice basic presentation. You should review the transcript and rewrite it if possible.

It's auto generated by Google. I think there is some way to edit it but it would take me many additional hours to do.

My dear. You are pretty and everything but please show the pictures of the traditional clothing even more than your shinning face. I had to stop the video to study the pictures in silence when It would have worked well to see them over your talk.
