Recap below...
The Georgetown University women's basketball team made a late run to defeat the Howard University Bison 69-63 on Sunday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium in a crosstown battle. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-3 on the season, while the Bison drop to 5-3 on the year.
Head Coach Darnell Haney
"I'm just so proud of our team and their grit, they kept fighting. Going down, understanding that you're going to face some adversity, these things are difficult and I'm so proud of our young kids. Our freshmen Alexia (Dagba), Jaeda (Wilson), Khadee (Hession) and Jayden (McBride) were huge today, and Kelsey (Ransom) just did what she always does and took the team on her back to get it done. Even Victoria (Rivera) hit two huge free throws and a three late, it was a total team effort and I'm just so proud of them. Now we're just going to continue to beat the pavement. We will celebrate it tonight, and then get back to reality for a really eventful week tomorrow."
How it Happened
The lead went back and forth in the first quarter, and GU was looking at a two-point deficit with 2:51 to go.
A bucket from Kaliyah Myricks and four quick points by graduate student Kelsey Ransom closed out the quarter as the Blue & Gray led 17-13 after one.
Howard answered right back early in the second quarter, and even used a 7-0 run midway through the period to take the 26-22 lead.
However, it was Ransom again who banked in a triple to stop the momentum and a late 3-pointer by Jayden McBride made it 29-27 in favor of the Hoyas at the break.
Howard made up some ground in the third quarter, going up by as much as four points midway through.
The play of freshman Jaeda Wilson made the difference as she kept the Blue & Gray within a possession before a pair of free throws from junior Victoria Rivera would knot the contest at 41.
With both benches on their feet, the teams battled through the final minute of action with both squads showing flashes of brilliance. At the end of three, the score was tied at 46.
Wilson driving the lane was effective for the Blue & Gray early in the fourth as she scored GU's first five points.
Howard would come back to regain the lead going up by as much as six before Ransom scored four quick points to pull the Hoyas within two.
In the final minute, a late triple by Rivera and free throws would seal the victory as GU escaped a wild finish with the 69-63 win.
