my favourite line in this movie was one that showed that this movie did diversity well. the actor guy says "I always wanted to be an actor, i didn't want to be a soldier, but i was the wrong colour." and it's not forced, it's not mentioned again or overused. it's subtle, effective, and hit me hard.

The problem these days is everything seems to have a political agenda. The critics reviews are always based on some sort of idiotic diversity criteria check list. Even though the series of wonder woman, the six million dollar woman or Xena weren't big screen those shows were great. Xena in particular was fantastic. It was light, funny and good natured, now a days it's in your face for no particular reason wonder woman. The notion that women were ever oppressed is laughable when comparing like to like. Imagine and ordinary household 70 years ago where a man/husband works long days in a steel mill, or factory or some other blue collar job to support his family and the woman/wife stays at home to care for the children. They worked together as a unit for the welfare of their family, there was no oppression. The fraud of women being oppressed comes from comparing the wealthiest of men to the poorest of women.

There's a line in the movie where he says "it's no man land meaning no man can cross" and they could've so easily have said "I'm no man" but instead she just says "it's what I need to do" this movie never makes men feel inferior to make woman feel powerful this is an amazing movie

What kind of angers me most about this topic and the feminists who are putting this movie on a pedestal is that they are kind of forgetting the point of the film. Wonder Woman was all bout Diana and her love for mankind, her love for the world and her fight to save it from the brink of destruction. She didn't have anything against men, she didn't leave themysciara to prove to men that "Hey women are amazing and better than you look I can lift a truck with my bare arms." She went because she saw that the outside world was in danger and wanted to use her abilities to help save it. And feminists are using the movie as a chance to bash on men and to push forward their agenda while the movie taught an amazing message of what it means to be HUMAN and what it means to LOVE. Sure, lets celebrate the fact that its the first successful superheroine movie and that we have literally been waiting since forever to see a Wonder Woman film. But it shouldn't be such a huge deal and such a groundbreaking moment in women history when literally the movie is telling you "We're all humans. We all love."
@morelihernandez7456
@morelihernandez7456 7 жыл бұрын
strontiumXnitrate Kind of disappointing since its the complete opposite of what the message originally meant all those years ago. Even the director stated "I want to be a great director, not a great woman director. But at the moment the world is still preoccupied with the fact that I am a woman director." I bet its hard for her to only be known for her being a woman than her amazing work with the movie.

I didn't have high hopes for wonder woman but it really surprised me because with female super hero/villain movies they either overly sexualise and reduce her to a poster on a teenage boy's wall for him or jack off to (e.g. Catwoman) OR they take the opposite route and completely desexualise her and try to sell the feminist angle (e.g. Supergirl) which defeats the superhero awe factor. With wonder woman though, they achieved the perfect balance. She looked good AND she was badass and sturdy. I truly think it's one of the best films DC has released in the past couple years.

salaah khayr Lol, it seems you are kinda fucked up. No, she was protrayed in exactly the same angle as a superman (or other male action hero) movie. We all like superheroes because they represent the traits we all wish we had, superpowers and superlooks (hence the tight outfit of superman and the muscel body display). If we cover wonderwoman up, well, we are just giving her a different treatment from what we give other "male" superheroes. We would actually be shutting the whole escence of a female hero (or any superhero) just because she is a woman..that doesnt seem like equality to me. .. What you decide to do with her poster is up to your twisted mind. So don't blame wonder woman's portrayal for that

Gi Bo One can catch a bullet while the other is immune to physical trauma of almost any kind. Their costumes shouldn't, for any practical reason, be similar. I know the reason why WW wears her spartan gear, it makes sense in context. It has nothing to do with her being sexy. Superman's suit is just a uniform/under-suit from his planet, which was worn under their astronaut gear. Again, it doesn't, and shouldn't, have anything to do an looking sexy. They should look like they make sense, like a real person is wearing it. They're still people, and what you're doing is actually a disservice to potential writers trying to see what people are into.

(No malicious intent is in this comment. I really like this channel, I genuinely am not trying diss this video, and I'm not trying to start an argument.) I had found when I was watching Wonder Woman I was so hyped. I had never seen a woman fighting by herself. Helping the soldiers that were behind her advance. I do Tae Kwon Do, I had started a couple months before I saw Wonder Woman the first day it came out. I was in love, fighting and learning forms. Throwing punches, kicks, and using mock weapons. Seeing Wonder Woman made me feel better about being a girl and liking to fight and feel strong like one would expect a boy to. Although I could still build confidence in that field without seeing Wonder Woman, it still was important. I didn't feel weird because I liked feeling strong. I had never seen a woman do this, where she helped her friends, felt no shame being stronger than the men around her, and lead everyone by herself. It felt good to see a woman fight like what I'd been seeing male actors do for years.

I thought Wonder Woman was a great film and actually wasn't feminist but egalitarian. After all, Diana and Steve save each other multiple times. She acts like a feminist in the beginning, but at the end she realizes that men and women working together is what the world needs.

Yo, Diana never tried devaluing Steve by his gender. His "lack of honor" and other cultural differences were fair game, but not because he was a man. She grew up on an island of only women, but she never tried to say that she was inherently better. On Themyscira there weren't any men so there wasn't any separate way to treat them. She demanded the respect she was owed by virtue of being a sentient being, that's pretty much it. Her character development is based on her perceptions of good and evil, humanity and mankind as a whole.

Sounds like you are falling back on the preconceived notions about feminism that were mentioned in the video. It's literally just the belief in gender equality. Like any group of people, we are not a monolith. There will be feminists that believe rejecting all femininity is important to their feminism because they see it as an unnecessary performance for men. Other feminists believe forcefully rejecting all femininity is anti-feminist as it assumes feminine characteristics are inherently worth less than masculine characteristics. This is just one common difference that arises among different feminists. It's like some guys just met one or two assholes who called themselves feminists and now they associate everything evil and mean with it. That's just irrational.

jhunt5578 I totally enjoy and understand the contrasting themes. I just didn't like how wonder woman defeated Ares. Just didn't like how she won but it was still a great movie

Sherdog I understand why some people didn't like the fight, the CG and the villain holding back is derivative of other CBM endings. But I really enjoyed the meaning and most of the execution of the fight. In the end WW defeats Ares in a very un-violent way, she's tranquil (almost peaceful) in her power and Ares' angry attacks dissolve right in front of her, she even defeats him by deflecting his attack back at him. The theme and message carry through the battle poignantly. Most other CBM endings don't have anything close to that. It's just CG visual eye candy and nothing more.

The important thing about Wonder Woman is that it's a movie featuring a woman who owns her femininity and badassery equally, engages in a romance, and kicks ass; that's directed by a woman; and is actually a coherent story with good superheroic visual aesthetics. It's an opportunity to say that we (women and moviegoers generally) want that. We want women to be given high-powered roles in movies like this because they can do fantastic things. Patty Jenkins proves it, having done what Zack Snyder's consistently failed to do in making at the very least a well put-together film. Heck, if we could have Patty Jenkins take over from Snyder for the rest of the DCEU, I'd actually have some hope for its direction. Granted, I wouldn't call it the best film of 2017 (Logan and it are roughly equal for their very different merits, and Get Out was possibly more ground-breaking and so, so smart). But it was a damn good movie.

IMO wonder woman is a bad film. It's boring, CGI is terrible, characters and script itself is dull and at times very stupid. So.. I actually agree with Cameron, that this film isn't proving anything. People should instead look at films that actually has strong, interesting female characters in the lead roles. "Big little lies" I think is a great example. Also "Arrival", "Incendies", "I, Tonya" etc. are much more important and waaaay better films than "WW". Making a film where this supermodel with godly powers kicks asses doesn't prove anything and doesn't make any real change
@SummerGayle
@SummerGayle 7 жыл бұрын
I liked Wonder Woman because the film itself didn't feel like it was trying to push a political agenda. It was just a fun movie with fun characters. The reason I was so taken with it was because I went in expecting something at Suicide Squad level of story telling and character development, and got a good movie instead. It's like the burger analogy: For the friend, that burger probably came out of nowhere and blew his mind, but for our host it came up against imagined perfection. For people who were disappointed with Wonder Women after all the hype, they went in expecting that perfection, and left with however their opinions lined up with their expectations.

I hated "Wonder woman", I think, it is just another stupid superhero film for kids which is no better than the rest. I didn;t even find it entertaining, it was very boring actually. And the sad part is that everyone is pretending, that it is this incredible female achievement! It is ridiculous! Women can make good films and should be given strong, interesting female characters to play. Like in "Arrival" or "Lady bird" or "I, Tonya" or "Incendies". Even more disturbing imo is the fact, that James Cameron is called "sexist" because of the things he said about "WW". The people who say this are blind and stupid. Cameron has a strong, interesting female character in almost every one of his films. Rose, Neytiri, Sarah Conor, Ripley.. he should be considered feminist.

Loved the first 4/5. Absolutely hated the last CG laced fight with the real Ares. It should have ended with her realization that there's both evil and good in humans, Ares or not. If they had focused on that, the movie could have easily have gone well beyond the philosophy of the Dark Knight, but DC decided to dumb it down by wrapping it up with busy explosion scenes. The movie contradicts itself by first saying there's evil in humans, and Ares is just giving a little nudge, then showing humans becoming good after the real Ares dies. Shame on you, DC. Stand your ground instead of pandering to the audience. You are downgrading a great movie into a "good" movie. I still think linking feminism with Wonder Woman is a long stretch. Still, I would gladly embrace this kind of "feminism", if they are this fair in presenting themselves as true equals, instead of acting like spoiled brats picking illogical fights in everything, and demanding special treatments.

I hated Wonder Woman as a character in this film, the titular character pissed me off immensely. As a teenage girl, I felt nothing but resentment towards Diana as opposed to the empowerment I was supposed to feel. She is way too overpowered and way too at ease with her powers, powers that she had discovered for the first time in her life and learned to deal with them in an instant with no struggle whatsoever. I can't see what's so empowering about Diana and her strength when there was virtually no struggle in coping with these powers. Her combat prowess I understand, that shit was the result of years of training. Her ability to jump incredible lengths and destroy buildings though? That shit probably took like five minutes or so and it was just so uninteresting. IMO Captain America: The First Avenger did this concept way better.

I think something people are forgetting is that girls can be inspired by a female hero who's not the titular character or by a male character. Even though Scarlet Witch had barely any screen time, she's my freaking hero. For the next year after age of ultron came out, I legit wanted to be her. Her name wasn't in the title and she wasn't the main focus of the film, but she was still a total boss. Also, who's to say that male character's can't be role models for girls? It's about the quality of the person regardless of their gender. If a little girl went to see a Captain America movie, and noticed how, idk, selfless, he was, she can want to be like him in regards to his character traits even though they are not the same gender

What makes Wonder Woman feminist is that it isn't feminist. It's not trying to define the character by her womanhood. It's not separating her from other characters for being a woman. She's just allowed to be a regular movie character like every man has gotten to be for the past forever. Do men watch Captain America and think "Yeah! I'm so proud to be a man after watching that!" No. Because Captain America is a character first, and a male character second. That's how it's always been for male characters. Finally we see that here where we haven't very often before. Diana is a character first, and a female character second. As a woman, all I've ever wanted is to see that it's just normal for women to be on equal footing. It's not something to point out or gawk at. It's just a person doing great things, man or woman. Is it good to acknowledge the accomplishments of women that we uniquely bring as women? Yes. But it's not necessary when that accomplishment has nothing to do with our gender. And this movie is proof that women can be accepted and beloved like normal characters without it being such an operation and ordeal. And that is ten times more empowering than any in your face girl power message could ever be.

The bad guy also tried to do the cliche “join me, I’m doing the right thing, they aren’t worth it” cliche, AND the villain told the hero that they had the power to kill him. I don't think the movie is promoting equality for women. It's promoting the unity of women. Commonality between women is having been silenced by nondisclosure agreements after resigning from jobs because they spoke up about being sexually assaulted. The common thread is women moving from tolerating the progression of being sexualized to being sexually assaulted. Women can be empowered by the Princess Diana character because of the choices she makes. When they see Diana overwhelmed by witnessing pain and suffering to the point she is compelled to act to save the people on the other side of No Man's Land, she reveals her belief in herself. That can inspire women to believe in their worth and unify into one voice speaking out about one issue; women can and must reclaim their voice.

I do like Wonder Woman and I am glad we got the female-led superhero film that deserves praise. The thing is, it should've been filmed while Marvel sets up their universe. When ignoring on a female lead aspect, it still feels like a generic superhero blockbuster film, it's fine, like Marvel Phase 1-fine. It's kind of why people compare it to Captain America: The First Avengers and the first Thor being combined. It does make the competition in the business even harder for DC because Marvel has a massive lead.

The forced diversity thing was a fantastic point. Me and my friends went to see the remake of The Magnificent Seven and the whole way through I couldn't help but think about how they were forcing diversity in where it frankly didn't fit whatsoever. I know the original westerns were incredibly white and the addition of Denzel Washington was great and made some sense, much the way The Hateful Eight did. But then they bring in a female character? Which would have been okay if she did anything important, but she wasn't even included in the 'seven'. Then they had a Korean guy, and a Native American character, and it just looked so obvious they were trying to appeal to as many races as possible on purpose. Being the same race as a character doesn't or at least it shouldn't make them automatically relatable. Idk that's just how I felt after seeing it

What really rubs me the wrong way in the hype surrounding Wonder Woman is that I can see the marketing strings behind all of it. First of all, it seems like, in some people's eyes, WW is an absolute revolution because this is a blockbuster, directed by a woman and with a female main character. But I feel like its stealing the spotlight from other good films directed by women or with female leads, only because its a blockbuster. Of course it's a very good thing that studios are finally letting women take the control (in front or behind the camera) of tent poles movies. But we need quality, we need more women directing more films of quality, with more female leads. The amount of money doesn't matter, the change must come on every scale of the industry. And giving WW so much credit for this "revolution" feels like it's undermining other awesome projects directed or performed by women. But don't get me wrong. The movie is good, the directing is solid as well as the performances, and its definitely the best DC movie adaptation of the DCCU. But to say that WW is a revolution is really infuriating when you consider the film with feminism in mind. WW was and still is a sex symbol ! She is still designed to appeal to male audiences (like, she needs a shield to protect herself from bullets but she doesn't wear a full-body armor, because "thiiiighs!"). It feels wrong to transform a sex symbol designed for males into a inspiring role model for little girls for marketing purposes. Please she wins at the end of the movie because of the power of love ffs. Cliché much ? The project around WW is indeed a really good thing for the industry, but don't let marketing teams convince you that it's thanks to them that those films exists ("Look at us we are so progressive, now consume our products"). It's only thanks to us, the audiences, male and female, by paying to see good movies directed or starring, women, but also people of colors, LGBT, that the shift towards equality and greatness will happen. Because if we only move to theaters to watch blockbusters directed by women, then we are virtually killing chances for projects with medium or small budgets. The studio will say something like: "oh you know films directed by women only sell when they direct blockbusters, so we won't invest in your 10M dollars project". Don't let the producers dictate your tastes, please. Peace. PS: And are the people saying that "if you didn't like the movie then you're sexist" fucking serious ? Please calm the fuck down and stop bringing stupidity in the equation. By being retarded you're not helping the cause. At all.

Just gonna leave this here. 1. The problem with the term 'feminism' is that the vocal minority of the movement - and it's the majority of the ones being active - is very different to how most feminists think of themselves and feminism. But you have to remember that chances are those really extreme feminists probably believe they're doing good things for equality. 2. Feminism doesn't hold a monopoly on gender equality. Yes the definition (however separated from the movement it may be) is about gender equality, but that doesn't mean you have to be a feminist to believe in equality. I would never call myself a feminist because the ideology is inherently limited. It's purely about equality between sexes, and says nothing about race/sexual orientation/age/disabilities/whatever. Egalitarianism covers all of that.

CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY PEOPLE THINK WONDER WOMAN REPRESENTS WOMEN?? Here's the fact: 1. She's born as a god, not even human, let along woman. 2. I completely understand the criticisms of people putting this movie on a pedestal, the third act was kinda disappointing to me compared to the hype I felt leading up to the release and through the first part of the movie. I also really appreciate the fact you brought up what this movie could mean to people via representation. Tbh when I first saw it in theaters, the No Man Land scene almost made me cry. I had never seen a big screen mainstream movie put a woman in such a bad ass and defining scene. I think it's a good first step to introducing more types of heroes in big name movies.

I just really hate how people keep saying how great of a feminist movie it was when really they don't give Diana any motivation other than being the chosen one and no personality either so she's left a mary sue, and they try telling her backstory like "zeus created the amazons to basically seduce men into not fighting each other anymore" when in actual Greek mythology the amazons were created because a housewife decided "hey I don't want to be an abused housewife I'm going to take any woman who wants to follow me and start my own society and free enslaved women" and they legit didn't hate men either like the Amazon queen literally worshipped and banged Ares on the regular and had 2 daughters, one of which was Diana's mom so like why is it considered a feminist masterpiece when in the movie they treat women like things to be used for war or sex or admiration instead of actual people with personalities and feelings

I don't think the movie is feminist. I think that the comic book was feminist, because it portrayed a female lead character as strong, at a time, when only men were supposed to be superheroes. But this movie just regurgitates old ideas, like the idea that women can do a "men's-job" better than men (like go to war and win the battle etc.). But it doesn't rethink gender. It still shows men as strong and women as weak, except one very particular woman who's stronger than the others. Also: I doubt that wonder woman will resonate with women or young girls, because the only thing she has in common with them is her gender. That's it. Put that aside and you have a ridiculously beautiful, tall, lovely, strong-willed, powerfull person played by an actress who used to fight in the Israeli army... sure... we're so alike. And one last point: she still wears an outfit that portrays her as sexy... reminds me very much of Lara Croft... So maybe the movie isn't anti-feminist, but it's definately not as revolutionary as the advertisement claims.

The thing is most people who make "anti-feminist" videos, like Sargon etc have views that some people would call feminist, particularly if it's the idea of discriminating. The problem is when people invent things like the wage gap and use it for a political agenda. Sargon doesn't want women paid less because they're women, but he doesn't think people are going out of their way to do this. He also doesn't think women should be kitchen dwellers like in the early 20th century, there's very few people who actually agree with that and yet less than 10% of people like to identify as "feminists".

I have nothing against diversity whether it be social or cultural. I just hate now that everything comes in labels. Even liking or hating something can label you. It's been happening in the society like FOREVER but the difference of it from then to now is that we have more words and adjectives to put a person in a labeled box. Like honestly that wasn't the point of diversity and equality at all. I always pictured it as going out on the street and seeing all sorts of different people and not seeing anything different- just people like me going about there everyday life.

Wonder woman is what a true feminist should be. She is not only strong and brave and fierce: she is gentle and loyal and loving. Unfortunately today's feminists seem to have forgotten those last three traits. They have lost their femininity entirely. I believe that a woman can not properly achieve the first three without the last. Sorry if this triggers you but it is simply my experience and opinion. But if it helps you to accept this reality I also believe that true masculinity requires much the same balance.

I think Wonder Woman is the best DC has to offer. To me, the fact it's an okay movie and the fact that it took a woman led superhero film for dc to finally be considered fresh again is not a good thing. Dc should be fresh because of a perfect superman or Batman film. Not a superhero film that isn't like other ones. And the only way it isn't like other ones is the fact it is a women led film

To all these people thinking that this is a film that is supposed to revolutionize gender equality, saying that this movie is meant *only* to empower women only due to the fact that it had a female heroine lead is ironically sexism in itself. Maybe the purpose of the movie is to give a moral about humanity and how it can be both positive and negative, and how there is good in everyone, you know, since that's what the whole movie was about. And maybe the main character happens to be a woman because it has been a long time since Wonder Woman was ever featured in film (just specifically her, not female heroines in general). Just because you happen to have many strong female characters in a plot doesn't change the moral. Yes there were parts of the movie where I suppose her strength and intelligence were under estimated, but that's not the entire purpose of it all. If you only focus on one part, you'll expect more from it and you're not able to enjoy the damn movie. Of course she's going to be strong and intelligent, she's freaking immortal! And can we just for once forget that they're women and enjoy the movie? Can a film ever have female characters without automatically assuming that it's only meant for that in order to show girl power and how "woman can be strong too"? Can we all just enjoy the plot?

Thank you for your thoughts. I have to say that I don't like Wonder Woman as a superhero in general. For some of the reasons that were emphasized in this movie - 'love' as motivation. Punctuated that she managed to 'awaken her power' only after her lover died. Batman is more my type. Was dragged to the movie by my friend who was hyped up because of all the great feedback - in the end we agreed It was an OK movie. . I guess in comparison to Catwoman and Electra from over a decade 'OK and nice to look at' is a giddy relief to some. Best for me was the beach battle. A little bit tainted by unnecessary check-boxing of the Death of a Beloved Mentor trope.
