Thank you for this interview, SyFy Wire! It's a shame that your videos about Wonder Woman are being overlooked amidst all the buzz about the Wonder Woman movie. George Perez is one of my favorite comic artists, and he as well has been overlooked in the media about the movie. Perez is probably the most important Wonder Woman artist/writer living today. His 1987 reboot of the character was great and helped put Wonder Woman back on the map. I will say that it's a little awkward to include Perez' response on you saying his name right in every video you did of him. A little repetitive. :P

The interviews on this channel are fantastic. Loved George Perez artwork when I was collecting comics as a kid. I won an original drawing of the Thing breaking a couple Roman style columns at a comic book convention auction once and when Perez was at a convention at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim once (early 80's), he signed as many of his comics as we gave him. Super nice guy.

I think that the Wonder Woman revamp by Perez was one of the best things to ever happen to the character because it made comic books fans take her seriously. However, the two things that really BOTHERED me about the reboot in 1986 was: 1. Perez ignoring Donna Troy during the reboot. 2. Diana's so-called "1st appearance" during the 1986 Legends series. It would have made perfect since if George Perez decided that, the first six issues of Wonder Woman in late 86/early 1987 take place during the beginning of the Post Crisis silver age. To have Diana just "show up" in modern day 1987 didn't make sense to me. Especially, when there was a similar character in the New Teen Titans flying around with the same powers??? To have Donna Troy make her debut in the Post Crisis before Diana was totally wrong. If it wasn't for Wonder Woman, there wouldn't be a Wonder Girl or a Donna Troy in the first place. To me, I always felt that was a slap in the face to William Marston. I read years later that, Perez claimed he total forget about Donna Troy when he was doing the WW reboot....yeah ok! He had just finished writing the Titans before he took on the Wonder Woman title. Furthermore, when he left WW and went back to the New Teen Titans, he severed Donna' s ties to the Amazons. Although her Titans of Myth origin was unique, Perez never explained how Donna received her "lasso of truth" or her bracelets??? In my opinion, it would've made perfect sense to just start the DC universe over in 1986 and make Diana appear around the same time that Clark and Bruce did. In addition , during the "reboot" she was no longer a founding member of the JLA. To have the Black Canary be the first female to join the league bothered me as well. It would take DC comics 20 years later to realize that ,Diana deserved to be a charter member again and the first Amazon to make her debut into man's world as Wonder Woman (thanks to Ifinite Crisis and Dan Didio). Don't get me wrong, I loved Perez's artwork and development of the characters during the reboot (i.e. Diana, Cheetah, Dr. Psycho and Etta Candy). However, ignoring the adoptive sister part and having Diana come along several years after the Justice League of America formation wasn't so smart on Perez's part.

To be honest, I didn't think anyone in DC thought that through. The reboots they were doing were unprecedented and they didn't have a foundation or a similar situation happen before like the reboot of the new 52 or even Infinite Crisis. They just wanted a fresh start especially after streamlining the timelines. I think if they had done it today, they would've made it imperative to have Wonder Woman as a founding JL member and do her justice as they did, as you said, in Infinite Crisis. I think DC was just looking for fresh ideas especially. at that time, especially Wonder Woman title had been stale since practically Marston.

I liked Perez's work with the character, but I hate that he made Steve Trevor and Etta Candy older and less important.
@terryjenkins18892 жыл бұрын
I, 100% totally agree with you. I always feel the exact same way, about Diana's later introduction, into the "Post-Crisis" DC Continuity. And that, "Donna Troy/Wonder Girl", was given a "totally" different origin, no longer connected to "Diana", or the "Amazon's". Plus, I also disliked that "Steve Trevor", was no longer a romantic interest, for "Wonder Woman". Overall though, I still did greatly enjoy " Mr. Perez's run on the book.
