Wonderful Classic Ferrari Trio 😍: 250 GTO, 250 GT "Breadvan" & 250 GTO/64, V12 Sound at Goodwood FOS

Personally, this trio of classic 60s Ferraris was the best, looking at the 2023 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed (FOS). Frankly, when you think about it, when do you happen to see, in the same place, Nick Mason's 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, the one-of-a-kind Ferrari 250 GT SWB "Breadvan" made by Drogo and a very rare 250 GTO/64? Despite the inclement weather, with heavy rain, the cars honoured their presence by still going up Goodwood Hill to the delight of the wet enthusiasts crowded along the road. The 250 GTO was purchased by Mason in 1978 and is a model belonging to the Ecurie Francorchamps, which obtained second place in its class at Le Mans in 1968, driven by "Beurlys" & "Elde". 1963 it continued to run, winning many races driven by Guy Hansez and in 1964 by Peter Clarke. The Ferrari "Breadvan", car S/N 2819GT is based on the 250 GT SWB model from which it derives and is commissioned by Count Giovanni Volpi to compete against the 250 GTOs; aerodynamically developed in this form by Piero Drogo. She participated in the 1961 edition of the Tour de France with the French crew Olivier Gendebien and Lucien Bianchi, where she finished second. The Breadvan, or "Camionette", as it was initially dubbed, is lower than the 250 GTO, and Kamm's aerodynamic theory inspires its shooting-brake style. Finally, the Ferrari 250 GTO/64 has a unique and successful past in competitions with Mike Parkes, Jack Sears, Ludovico Scarfiotti & Graham Hill calibre drivers. Rebodied by Scaglietti as series II at the end of 1963, it obtained third place in class at the 24h of Le Mans in 1963, third place overall (and first in class) at the 12 Hours of Reims and first place at the 500km of Spa in 1964. But the winning results and the excellent placings are many from 1963 to 1965.

Personalmente questo trio di Ferrari classiche anni 60 è stato il più bello all'edizione 2023 del Goodwood Festival of Speed (FOS). Francamente, a pensarci bene, quando capita di vedere, nello stesso posto, la Ferrari 250 GTO del 1962 di Nick Mason, l'esemplare unico di Ferrari 250 GT SWB "Breadvan" realizzata da Drogo ed un rarissimo esemplare di 250 GTO/64? Nonostante il tempo inclemente, con forte pioggia, le auto hanno onorato la loro presenza percorrendo comunque la salita di Goodwood per la gioia dei bagnati appassionati assiepati lungo la strada. La 250 GTO è stata acquistata da Mason nel 1978 ed è un modello appartenente alla Ecurie Francorchamps che ottenne un secondo posto di classe a Le Mans nel 1968 pilotata da "Beurlys" & "Elde". Nel 1963 continuò a correre vincendo molte gare pilotata da Guy Hansez e nel 1964 da Peter Clarke. La Ferrari "Breadvan", vettura S/N 2819GT è basata sul modello 250 GT SWB da cui deriva e fu commissionata dal conte Giovanni Volpi per competere contro le 250 GTO; sviluppata aerodinamicamente in questa forma da Piero Drogo. Partecipò all'edizione 1961 del Tour de France con l'equipaggio francese Olivier Gendebien and Lucien Bianchi dove si piazzò seconda. La Breadvan o "Camionette" come venne originariamente soprannominata è più bassa della 250 GTO ed il suo style da shooting-brake si ispira alla teoria aerodinamica di Kamm. Infine la Ferrari 250 GTO/64 possiede uno strepitoso e vincente passato nelle competizioni con piloti del calibro di Mike Parkes, Jack Sears, Ludovico Scarfiotti & Graham Hill. Ricarrozzata da Scaglietti come II serie alla fine del 1963, ha ottenuto il terzo posto di classe alla 24h di Le Mans nel 1963, il terzo posto assoluto (e primo di classe) alla 12 Hours of Reims ed il primo posto alla 500km di Spa nel 1964. Ma i risultanti vincenti e gli ottimi piazzamenti sono davvero tanti dal 1963 al 1965. These cars are perfectly maintained mechanically and in the exhaust system so I'm not surprised at all that they sound exactly as they should and as they did in the 60s 😉👍

It looks like atrocious weather to film in, but at least you had those glorious Ferrari sounds to keep you warm. Nice to see the Breadvan looking fantastic again after its accident.

You're right, at certain moments I was thinking if it made sense to continue filming, then the quality of the cars at Goodwood makes you want to stay and when you see these marvels you understand that it was worth it 👍

The 62 250 GTO has got to be the sexiest of all time! The Breadvan sounds like it is higher compression with bigger cams and a lighter flywheel. Not very pretty but also really cool.

Quando ho visto la breadvan picchiata alla le mans classic 22 mi è dispiaciuto un sacco.per fortuna è di nuovo in forma

Anche a me, oltretutto è stata una bella botta. Devo dire che è tornata in splendida forma, poi senti come suona 😍 Magari non è bellissima in senso assoluto, ma come si fa a non amare un "furgoncino del fornaio" come questo 😄

This is a tricky one... For me, it's either the Breadvan or the GTO/64... The Breadvan being "the car that set out to beat the GTO" While the GTO/64 is a much improved GTO... So, in my head, they are practically of the same level...

Your consideration is very interesting. But I add that the original 1962 GTO has a beautiful shape, so personally it is 3 times difficult to choose 😅

@@Italiansupercarvideo I prefer the /64 car for some other reasons... I would agree that the '62 body is indeed beautiful, but underneath it had problems with its aerodynamics, that's why there's that small spoiler at the back, that's not there for downforce, well, not the kind that we now knew. I mean, it's not really there to press the rear wheels further into the ground, it's there more to press the rear bodywork back in place and stop it from lifting... Before that was fitted, the prototype GTO suffered from rear end lift, which compromised stability and top speed. That's not a good thing, especially because the reason why the GTO came about in the first place is because the 250 SWB also had bad aerodynamics and rather low top speed... The 1964 body is a dual purpose thing. It is to smooth out the transition from the GTO to the new 250 LM that Enzo is hoping to homologate, that's why the '64 body looks a lot like the LM's. But, compared to the '62 cars, the GTO/64's bodies were lower, shorter, and yet more aerodynamic.

@@Italiansupercarvideo that's why for me, the GTO/64 is better, because it's basically going to be the faster GTO. Still, there's at least one '62 GTO that would earn my yes... In 1964, privateer David Piper modified his '63 model GTO by lowering the roofline, putting wider wheels and tires, and tweaking the engine. The car is known as the "chop top 250 GTO", and it looks the business and goes like one... I mean, even Lorenzo Bandini once took Mauro Forghieri to see the "chop top" GTO and declared it to be the "world's fastest 250 GTO!" Sadly, the modifications had been removed in the 1980s when that particular car was restored...

I like the look, and the sound of GTOs, beautiful cars. But if I owned one, I would sell it and somehow get the California sage green AM DB4 GT, and the azure (blue) 275gtb competizione #18011, or that one in Verde pino, glorious. Neither are for sale but hey one can dream. Or, heck, I can save money and buy a quality model from exoto or CMC 😂. That's as close as I'll get to ownership of one of these. Still I'm blessed enough to own a healthy 996.1 coupe 6spd manual. Hard work pays off, just not as much for some as for others. Oh to be born into money... If you owned a Ferrari 250, you would have no problem buying the Aston Martin and the other Ferrari you named. Personally, I would also add a splendid 250 Spyder California 😅 Congrats on your Porsche, manual transmission, what a fun car it must be to drive 👍 The video of the 1/5 scale model was very nice, that guy did a crazy job, he has great manual skills with metal. The only thing that jars him are the wheel rims, he should adopt the spoked ones like the original. That would be perfect 👍
