A Man who loves some special sounds that will last for eternity . Superb ! .. Its so easy to overlook that , " That sound " was not just the brilliance and passion of the young HM + early years VOX + F Strat + tape echo - and so on . It was then artistically tweaked by expert studio tecs with state of the art effects ! . Excellent - thank you .
@highpitwilma5 жыл бұрын
Aye,Neil,as far as the only effects they had in those days,were massive Plate reverbs,and Springs,a bit of Compression,everything valve-driven,every group member and orchestra,screened off,to prevent bleed-through,and everyone playing simultaneously to get a take...one bum note....another take...sometimes a fluffed note would be allowed to pass,if it meant time and budget prevented more takes...as in "Man of Mystery"...and others![Purist players of my days,would even play the fluffed notes as on the record,for perfection!].Yes,they could E.Q.the tracks,but everything was recorded in Mono on simple two-track machines[I mean,in the real early days!] I have been in Abbey road,and they have kept Studio 2 as it was,in the 'sixties,and the "later" 24-track ,2"wide tape,machines,present an awesome sight to Visitors!..as do the steam-driven..gear levers...time machine mixing desk..which is on the rear of the sleeve cover of the Shads first Album.So all this gear WAS "State of the Art" ....at the time! Wish I had a sound like Kurt,but the best I have achieved,is with the Catalinbread Binson Echorec,straight from Squire Strat to Vox AC1 [1990's original straight amp..no modelling effects!] The Squire Strat,plays and sounds better than my 1978 Custom Los Angeles Strat and 1978-ISH original Vox AC 30 TBR!..[ which is great but completely unreliable!..as was the reason Hank and Bruce changed to Mesa Boogies..in the 70's]The modern Vox's don't sound the same but are a lot more reliable!

@@highpitwilma Thank you for your great response - extremely interesting ! . I have kind of plateaued with my sound for my sanity's sake ! . Professionally Vox valvetronics 50w , Halls patches , eq and yes I agree some Squires trump actual fender ( particularly with Ironstone pickups ) I street play with a Vox mini5 - which is just superb and thoroughly recommended. Best wishes , Neil .

@@neilmatthews2527 Hi Neil!..have you tried the wee Vox Amplugs for bedroom practicing?,they are great!..I have the AC30 models,and for such a wee thing,you,could hide it in a closed hand,the sound is amazing!..delay,reverb,flanger,Gain overdrive....if you are into that...which I am not!,but plug your delay pedal into it and your MP3 payer for BT's,[I use my Sony Minidisc player],and you have a micro-studio!! Kind regards,and many thanks for your response..nice to talk to another passionate Muso! My Son is a record producer,in London,and he uses Abbey Road Studios regularly,and he has taken me in with him,[with permission from the Chiefs!]..it's an amazing place! Cheers,Bill.

Hi Neil!...me again,I have the original first series Vox Mini DA5 Modelling amp..it is a fantastic wee amp..there's no end to the sounds you can get..also with tap tempo...it doesn't have built -in rhythms ,which the newer Mini DA4 [...OR IS IT AC4?!],has,if I am correct in my thinking..they are moving so fast that it is hard to keep up with Vox products! One thing I must say,I stand by my original comments ,respectfully ,with regards to Kurt's deviation from the original tracks,but wisely,on reflection,I honestly think that if he had played it perfect note for note,then,because he has the exact sound,we would have the so-called "experts" suggesting that he was "Miming" [or as they say nowadays.."Syncing"!],to the record! When I switched on this afternoon,and Wonderful Land started,I honestly thought that I had clicked on a Shads clip on the sidebar!!..by mistake..Kurt,and Phil McGarrick [ random275] are the closest playing,and sounding,to Hank,that we will ever get! On one of the Shadows tours,at Newcastle City Hall,UK,[ Bruce and Hank's home town],Hank played a bum note,and just smiled at Bruce,pushing his glasses up comically,as he always does. Some latecomers came in right down to the front row..and Hank zoomed onto them..[part of the show?],saying "Hello,you've missed the show,we are about to go off now..."..so he says to Bruce,tell you wat,we'll give you a taste of what you missed...then they proceeded to go through three tracks at hyperspeed..[just a few bars each track..]..then Hank,pushing his glasses up again,says to the latecomers...."Actually,I played a wrong note in that last one"....which raised the roof with an ovation and cheering! Then,as it went quiet,Hank added,"I always like to do that now and again.....[long pause..smiling..]...it just lets you know that I am Human"....!!!..the crowd went wild again..only Hank could get away with that banter..but I am sure it was all rehearsed,and funny as hell nevertheless!! So maybe Kurt saw that tour!![but Kurt didnt play any Bum notes!!] Cheers Pal! oh!..and a big thanks to Kurt for sharing this excellent playing with us!
