We went in 2005 while on our honeymoon in Cancun. The 3 hour bus ride had beer & water on board & stopped off for an authentic taco lunch. We had maybe 1 1/2 ours to explore. What was great back then was that we got to climb to the top of the pyramid… which was a major highlight to do.

I went about 18 years ago, staying in Playa del Carmen. Got up really early and it took several hours to get there, but we did stop and see other sights along the way. We had several hours to spend there. At that time there was one good side that you could climb to the top. I would say worth the trip if you don’t have time constraints. Especially if you have to make it back to a ship.

We’ve been twice to Chichen Itza; however, we were staying at an all inclusive hotel in Cancun. That’s a huge difference! We got to stop in Merida and another tourist place to eat and see sites. We were still limited on time at the Pyramids but not as bad of an experience as y’all had. It’s definitely an amazing site!

Our private van (for 4, though we had to pay for 6) and tour guide made our time from Cancun more than worth the price. Learning about this amazing piece of historic architecture and its culture was the highlight of our trip. But even from Cancun, it was a LONG day. I wouldn’t consider doing it from Cozumel (where we now spend winters), especially if you are on a cruise! Thanks for this honest reporting on the excursion.

Extremely helpful info!! I have been contemplating taking the excursion to the ruins and you mentioned everything that’s been stopping me from booking it! If you have any other suggestions for Cozumel, I’d greatly appreciate!

It is extremely important that I visit this site on this trip, even if it is for only 30-45 minutes. To me, just being able to be there made it worth it for me to book it.

We have been to Cozumel many times and passed on this excursion for all of those reasons.

We took a ferry Seven years ago on our cruise and it was awful! Everyone was getting sick and we did take Dramamine and still felt awful. I will never do an excursion that involves a ferry every again.

I could not believe you were doing Chichen Itza from Cozumel due to the logistics. I have been, but while staying in Playa Del Carmen in the 1990s. In the past you could actually climb the pyramid to the top! Amazing Views from the top. This whole area was overgrown with vegetation and the area had been forgotten. The pyramid is really only reconstructed on 2 sides as they used what ever they could find to recreate the 2 good sides.

About 8 years ago, we stayed near Puerto Morelos. We opted to go to the Tulum ruins, which was about 90 minutes away, probably 1 hour from Playa del Carmen. It probably would’ve been a better choice, giving you more time at the site.

Totally agree that it's not worth it. You can stay at a resort in town and take an early tour to beat the crowds. Plus the resorts and flights to Cancun are not expensive, and there are some aging beaches on the island.

We honeymooned in Porto Morales and did this as a bus tour with and a few other stops. It was fun to do but we were not able to climb to the top. We also felt like the area around it was a cheap flea market

We had honeymoon cruise in the 90's; skipped Chichen Itza because it was 3 hours each way on bus. Coast at Playa del Carmen was pretty, and has smaller Mayan buildings. Cruises involve soooo much time on ship, not enough time at ports, in my opinion.

I went quite some years ago, but we were staying at Hotel Xcaret in Playa del Carmen. Still, it was a 3 hour (if I remember correctly) tour bus trip to get out to Chichén itza. I think we got a decent amount of time there with our tour. And back then we were allowed to climb the main pyramid and walk around the top. I’m so glad we were able to go when we did since climbing is no longer permitted.
