Love this interview. My brother, at 64, just got a job as a intern plumber. He has never been happier. He will be a certified plumber in 3 years. After making well over 6 figures every year working in the salt (diamond) mines in northern Canada, he just got divorced, he didn't want to retire. So I call my best friend from high school, who has a plumbing company, and he says if your brother wants a job I am in. Turns out my old brother is the best employee he has ever had. Age is relative. As is acting.

Awesome story...thanks for sharing! I've worked in the Atlantic City casino industry for over forty years and I've never understood how older people can sit in front of a slot machine for hours on end every week and just mindlessly tapping the screen. My first thought is they need to find a hobby or simply start learning something new to keep their mind engaged. Your older brother has taken the correct path.

Pretty hard to interrupt when Tom talks without taking a breath. I counted: only seven breaths taken the entire interview! Tom's a great actor, but I assume it's perhaps the innate narcissism within him that convinces him he's the most important person in the room.

@@karenherrera3961 Hanks is the target of completely made-up right wing conspiracy theories related to the kooky QAnon fad. A couple of mentally ill people went all over social media accusing him of fake crimes and the conspiracy theories kooks ran with it. It’s baseless internet gossip garbage. When I first arrived in Hollywood, I was blessed to work as assistant to Larry Brezner. Larry was a partner in the management company of Rollins, Joffe and Morra. At that time, RJMB was the most respected and revered management company for comedians.Their list of talent included Woody Allen, Robert Klein, Dick Cavett, David Letterman , Michael Richards and a young comedian named Robin Williams. Larry Brezner discovered Robin Williams. They were a wonderful group of people . The 3 years I worked there were incredible . ( Fear not, I’m getting to the Tom Hanks story…) Eventually, I was promoted to associate producer and spent 20 yrs working on network sitcoms , hour long series and MOWs. Tom Hanks was doing Bosom Buddies at Paramount where we had offices for a while. Larry was dying to speak with Tom so a meeting was set and he came over during a break in shooting. Tom Hanks was just getting a name for himself and, truthfully, some of the office staff didn’t know who he was. What Larry really wanted was to manage Tom . When the meeting ended, Tom ( A very gracious and respectful young man ) left and, Larry was crestfallen. Hanks had a manager and felt he should be loyal to him, even though RJMB could have taken this barely known actor on a not so hot at the time, sitcom and probably make him a big name. Larry still respected his loyalty even if he lost a client . What I will never forget is what he said after Tom left. “ There goes a guy who is going to be one of the biggest stars this business has ever known. He can do anything. That is an actor who can and will play anything. Comedy, Drama. You name it. He’ll probably be a producer , director as well. He can do it all !! I guess this is more of a tribute to Larry than Tom ( Larry died a few years ago ) . Larry hated losing Tom Hanks as a client but, he sure did recognize talent … and ethics and loyalty, in a town that is often short on both. Here’s to Tom Hanks and his wealth of talent and his sense of loyalty and ethics that , from what I hear are still very much in tact. And, to Larry Brezner who predicted the future career of Tom Hanks in 1980. God bless them both.

But what’s with Weinstein association. This guy would have pushed Tom into any kind of luid act for the ability to get a movie done. I see his woke buddies and all I see is another woke man without ethics who’s acting all the time. Who is he? Just another phoney actor in Hollywood. No place for Hanks. He’s an embarrassment!

Amazing interview - thoroughly enjoyed it. Like many others I've seen practically every one of Tom's movies over the years...and my favorite one was Nothing In Common (Jackie Gleasons's last movie). Tom's character in that was energy personified - great comedic writing and timing. It was hilarious for the first half...then shifted gears and got very serious in the second half. It really showcased Tom's versatility. There were so many great one-liners that have stuck in my head after watching it half a dozen times that I often use them even today. Tom Hanks is just one of those rare actors that when you see his name attached to a film you're compelled to check it out no matter what. But what really fascinated me about this interview was when he talked about his upbringing and constantly moving. Likewise, I went to 13 different schools over the years...my parents constantly moved all over the country. So I really identified with him when he described what the experience was like constantly being the 'new kid' and how the slate was cleared each time he moved and started fresh.

This message was right on target. After 54 years of accepting less than loving behavior from a man who at various times was a lover and a friend, I'm going to follow your advice. Many thanks ❤

Thank you very much for this interview of Tom Hanks. He is my favourite US actor (next to Clint Eastwood) and I love his early movies and his tv show (Splash, Bachelor's Party, The Man with the red shoe, Big, Bosom Buddies) and of course Sony and Madison.

I don't know if Mr. Hanks will ever see this comment, but I appreciate more than anything his remarks on equipoise. I've thought for years that stage acting is most comparable to sports. That is to say that one has to be there in that moment or it is lost forever - to the player as much as to the viewer. And "being there" is all the rest of what he's said about knowing the text, bringing something new and particular to each moment, getting over self-consciousness, and loving the work. Thank you both for a wonderful insightful interview.

This was a great interview! Tom Hanks isn’t just a “pretty face” and with 40 years under his belt he’s fully cognizant of his craft and his role in it! My favorite scene of his is in Forest Gump when he learns about having a son. I would love to know how he decided to play that scene! Watching his eyes in that scene is truly amazing as Forest realizes the truth, it’s truly remarkable the emotions he portrayed with his just his eyes. Tom is playing his part really well for his book tour now!
