I remember getting my lamp 35 years ago. It really is a profound moment in life.

What created Jane Toppan? Victorian era America discriminated openly against the Irish immigrants. Her parents really never had a chance, and neither did she as an indentured servant. Despite her intelligence and charm, she would always be inferior with very limited opportunities, and that had to breed resentment in her. Nursing school gave her the knowledge of drugs to get even with society. Victorian society also enabled her -- women were sheltered and naïve. The culture did not support women, or any woman making a complaint. There was no word for psychopath back then -- at the asylum where she was incarcerated, the psychiatrists diagnosed a moral disorder. It's interesting to note that her father was a bit of a madman, and one of her her biological sisters wound up in an asylum too.
