I'm getting the impression that he's subconsciously making a death trap out of his factory. He seems confused at how the kids all seem the same, meaning he doesn't quite get what's happening, but he doesn't do much to help the kids despite objecting to their actions. In the end, he seems to either realize the awful things he's been doing, finds that he enjoys the slaughter, or simply dissociates so the cycle can continue.
