As a person who writes based on observations I can see that mingyu and wonwoo loved a girl who were their friend. They imagined their hangouts with the girl as dates. When they finally decided to confess to her, we can see from the lyric "eyes meeting but hearts apart so sweet and so bitter" that the girl see's them as her friend and likes their friendship and nothing else. This obviously breaks their heart. As in the last scene we can see that they moved on from her and happy with each other. Most of the people think that rain indicates sadness, its actually used to represent the last step of clearing your mind from something that hurt/bothered you or your life. (I was rewatching this mv almost 18 times to write this) Edit: i think..I'm wrong but everyone has their own point of view

just a theory: wonwoo is in a relationship with the girl, later he got to know that mingyu is in love with her too. it’s hard for both of them to pretend that it’s okay when it’s not. slowly, the girl felt that wonwoo isn’t that interested in her anymore. but pretended that everything is fine around her too. this is the point where the sweetness turned into bitterness among the three of them, either it’s love or love. wonwoo thought of breaking up with the girl for mingyu because he deserves the best, but mingyu is never fine with it (the cap exchanging scene). at the end of the night, they were chasing the girl from the start and they stopped at the point which is bitter-sweet. that’s when they realised they have to let go few things to move on.

my theory (for minwon fans) : In Korea, gay isn't really accepted in the society. The theory is basically a love triangle but it has many sides. Most common ones from fans; Mingyu loves wonwoo and wonwoo loves mingyu, since korea isn't that open for gays, wonwoo uses the girl to reject his same sex relationship. However, Mingyu says otherwise. In another view, the girl and wonwoo could be shown as the relationship society agrees too. The scene where they're running, Wonwoo is after the girl, and Mingyu beside him. It could be Gyu going after Wonwoo, trying to tell that the others opinion about them doesn't matter. Then, In the scene where they dance in the restaurant, in the behind the scenes, you can find only minwon dancing. Also, Mingyu mostly looks at Wonwoo and not the girl. The rain symbolises unhappiness, rebirth, foreboding, determination, etc. Perhaps the rain shows that they're ready to start again, w/o the girl. The end the girl isn't there anymore, just minwon. They march forward to the rain without an umbrella showing they're ready for rebirth of their relationship as same sex. p.s: Most fans theory is basically telling that they're gay. It makes sense but it could also be them choosing friendship over a girl.

My interpreation is that Mingyu is someone who's fighting a losing battle for love. He's always second no matter how fast he runs. The girl is always shown together in one frame with Wonwoo but never with Mingyu. The rain signifies that he's still hiding his tears - taking his moment before he turns to Wonwoo - accepting defeat. The bittersweet moment of choosing other people's happiness over your own. Edit: I didn't expect this to gain that attention. I commented this after watching Mingyu and Wonwoo invite everyone to write their own interpretations. It's art. All other interpretations are valid 🙂

my analysis: the running scene means they are having crush on her. but see, mingyu is always behind. till they stop, wonwoo and the girl smile but mingyu not. if u notice too, gyu's scene is almost in the dark and his stares are always painful. it means that mingyu has (felt) lost at all. the scene in bar, i think, it shows the conflict of this friendship. i saw someone put out a theory that maybe the girl isn't supposed to be real, she's a personified as their love, or their blossoming love. they're never seen really touching her, and half way through the mv, she's just gone. and that by the end, both mingyu and wonwoo play their little back and forth, but they ultimately are too scared so they both back out and stay friends. they never tell the other they were in love, so they can remain friends. and i think this makes so much sense because we see mingyu look at wonwoo throughout the mv. and we see so many shots with him and wonwoo. theres only one time we see him with the girl and it was her seemingly telling him where wonwoo was. and maybe why wonwoo was with her was him exploring his crush on mingyu. and maybe he was even about to confess. and maybe the hat was symbolizing him telling mingyu that "you'll always be my best friend i love you" and mingyu giving it back would mean that its mutual. but i dont think they both knew that the i love yous weren't platonic. which would play into that sad sequence of them in the rain covering their tears. that now the girl isnt there, its a symbol that they pretend they don't have this blossoming love. they were willing to give up their feelings to remain friends. and this would play into what the weverse notification sent when this release that this MV was the story of friendship vs blossoming love in adults. they were both in love but both didnt want to possibly lose their friendship, so they didn't talk it out and they instead pretend that the blossoming love they have isn't there. and i think thats why its so bittersweet. because as the audience we're just observing them and see that they have a mutual crush so they should confess already. and while its sweet they chose friendship, it feels bitter because if they just confessed honestly, they could date and be open with each other. they were so close, yet so far.

So here's my theory: Wonwoo and Mingyu are best friends. At 0:24 we see, Mingyu comes to see the girl with his eyes filled with love and at 1:02 Wonwoo looking at the girl with all love which shows both of them were in love with the girl. Mingyu has started realising that its not only him but also Wonwoo who likes the girl. A scene comes where Wonwoo puts a hat on Mingyu's head and seconds later Mingyu takes off the hat and puts it on Wonwoo's head which is in my opinion Mingyu's first step backward. And the next running scene after they all stop Mingyu looking at them realising he should finally cut the thread(meaning stop liking the girl). And the last rain scene, Mingyu coming out into the rain and looking back at Wonwoo and gesturing him to come out is like him saying "Common man, you're my best friend. I'll always choose you over any girl". BUT It's not only Mingyu. Wonwoo giving that hat to Mingyu, Wonwoo coming out into the rain shows He chose friendship as well. In my opinion, this MV is like a backstory of Wonwoo and Mingyu's love story but in the end and even throughout the video we see both of them taking a step backward for each other for love which is also a step forward for their friendship. This is my theory: (Edit: The girl is not LeeHi! Thank you for correcting me.) We know it's about the bittersweetness of choosing between friendship and romance. Mingyu, Wonwoo, and the girl are all friends, but Wonwoo is interested in the girl romantically (although it's not clear whether she feels the same). What looks like the girl's hat from 0:47 is seen on Wonwoo at 1:40, which he gives to Mingyu, who then gives the hat back to Wonwoo. That hat might represent their "interest," or at least the focus of their attention. The girl seems to be expressing that she likes Wonwoo with the hat tilt, but the reoccurring shot of him looking conflicted in the bar seems to be him thinking about whether he wants to risk or even sacrifice his cherished friends to pursue the girl. 1:52 brings us a shot of them running, where it looks like Wonwoo is chasing after the girl, but Mingyu is chasing Wonwoo. What's interesting is the shot at 2:09 shows Wonwoo and the girl visually separated by a street pole, with Mingyu on Wonwoo's side, further developing Mingyu's desire to stay with Wonwoo (and perhaps him starting to see the girl as an opponent or an enemy). In the end, the raining scene that starts at 2:17 seems like one big metaphor. Mingyu steps out, taking a risk, silently asking Wonwoo to join him. And Wonwoo chooses Mingyu.

My theory is that wonwoo and mingyu were friends from the start. The girl came into their lives later down the road. They both develop feelings for her. Judging by the scene where wonwoo can be seen with the girl in the cafe, while mingyu is out in the rain, its safe to say that wonwoo got to her first. This causes things to be tense between the two as wonwoo later comes to realise that mingyu likes her too. Things feel strained as they both didn't know where their priorities lay. The scene where wonwoo puts the girls hat on mingyu's head only for mingyu to give it back indicates the point where they both realise their friendship outweighs the feelings they harbor towards the girl. They both are ready to move on from their feelings and let her go, to keep their friendship alive. It hurts them to take that big leap, but they know they have to . The ending is bittersweet- they are happy they didnt let their friendship go down the drain, but sad nonetheless,knowing it isn''t something they can just get over quick,as there will be regrets. Despite all of that,at the end of the day, they understand each other, value their friendship , and know that however bitter the past might be, they will be just fine since their friendship is strong. So,they decide to work on getting past their broken feelings ,and start their friendship anew.

ok i know there’s a lot of theories but i have one i really wanna share. so bascially, the three of them are long time friends. however, wonwoo and mingyu start contemplating whether or not they should cross the line between friendship and love, as they both don’t just like the girl as a friend, but actually might love her as more. along with stepping over that boundary, wonwoo and mingyu know that it would make the friendship between each other complicated. therefore the many lines of the song that describe their hearts getting farther apart with each step towards the girl and their hearts getting filled with emptiness shows how bittersweet the relationship is between the two of them and the girl. they know can’t get closer for the sake of friendship (that is between mingyu and wonwoo) so on the outside they act like nothing is going on. in the m/v, we see wonwoo getting closer to the girl than mingyu is with the hallway scene and running scene. in the hat scene, wonwoo comes out alone with her hat, hinting that him and the girl were alone together. in the running scene, wonwoo was the one to catch up to the girl first while was mingyu left panting behind them. mingyu notices this relationship between wonwoo and the girl begin to bloom, but pretends not to notice. in the end, he “smiles standing in the rain again” (you can say the rain is symbolic to his solemn feelings) because he feels bittersweet. on the outside, he smiles and doesn’t show the bitterness of seeing them get closer while he falls short behind. edit- also wanted to add that in the final scene, wonwoo stands there for a moment watching mingyu stand in the rain. i think wonwoo knows what he’s doing to mingyu and is thinking about it, but in the end, he decides that maybe things are better left unsaid and goes into the rain with him. in shorter terms, mingyu is the second lead :(

As Wonwoo sings in the first lines: "One you (the girl) and two moons (the boys)", there are three friends: two males and a girl. At a certain point the two guys starts falling in love with her. But she prefers Wonwoo over Mingyu, and you can tell by the fact that she gave his hat to Wonwoo (there is no scene where she gives her hat to him but, after 0:48 you see at 1:43 the hat is the same), and also by comparing the way she stares at Wonwoo (smiling and 'flirting') at 0:48 and the way she stares at Mingyu (quite coldly) at 0:32. Meanwhile, the boys are afraid to hurt each other feelings despite the love they both have for the girl. In particular, Wonwoo is the closest to the female and he knows that she feels something for him too. He initially sings: "I can't get closer, I'm sorry I'm like this", expressing he'd like to be more than just friends with her but he knows that Mingyu would suffer from this. Later, he cites a "Touch of a season passed-by", because in his heart he knows he wants to choose the girl (at 1:10 it seems like he's almost ready to confess to her while listening the same music) and he's thinking that his friendships would be a season passed-by if he picks the girl over Mingyu. It would be a season passed-by both referred to the relationship with Mingyu in a sad way (because they wouldn't be friends anymore) and to the relationship with the girl in a good way (because after the end of their friendship they'd become lovers). Then Wonwoo says: "I stand still before you (Mingyu), bеfore me", concluding "I'm okay, not okay" because, after imagining how things would change if he picks her, he still can't decide between friendship and relationship. Also the girl is hesitant: when she sings "Eyes meeting (hers and those of Wonwoo) but hearts apart" you can really get the feeling of having someone you like but not being possible to show it because someone (Mingyu) could suffer from this. She and Wonwoo share in this sense the same situation: their hearts are both apart, divided between each other and Mingyu. In all this, Mingyu has already given up: he seems more like a second lead indeed, also his figure and his scenes being blurred or obscured suggest this. Moreover, his surrendering eyes at the beginning (0:26) while looking at the girl express this. He knows very well that the girl likes Wonwoo instead of him, and by saying "Hiding the truth, pretending I'm fine" he wants to express the fact that he's willing to sacrifice his love to see his friends happy (since they both like each other). And when he sings: "I want an answer that I don't think I can find" he's probably thinking about the future: if Wonwoo (and also the girl) will stay friends with him even after becoming a couple. Of course this scenario hurts him and by telling: "I want the next thing", he's screaming that he's tired of all this and wants to move on. He repeats to himself that demanding the girl's love, that he cannot have ("If I give my hand and expect your heart"), would be too selfish of him and would only raise the distance between the three of them. He's trying not to think about them but it's hard, he says "Ruinous imagination consumes me" indeed ('ruinous imagination' is about him both dreaming of being the girl's boyfriend and thinking about Wonwoo and the woman becoming a couple). All of this makes him "Dream sweeter dreams", since he wants to focus his mind on something else. In the meantime Wonwoo is still stuck in his decision: "I close my eyes but thoughts of you (Mingyu) bring turmoil to night, to you (the girl) and me, real and dreamy". He knows that the feelings he and the girl have for each other are real but dreamy at the same time since they're not fully expressed, because there's Mingyu between them. The turning point of the story is when Wonwoo make up his mind after hesitating so much (1:32): right when we thought he would choose the girl, he gives his hat (that the girl gave him) to Mingyu, as if he wants to tell him: "Although it hurts, I'll choose our friendship". But Mingyu returns the hat to Wonwoo, meaning he's willing to step aside. After this part, there is a scene where the three of them run together. But you can see at 1:50 that the only happy people are Wonwoo and the girl, because they can finally be together. That's why they both look at Mingyu with that gaze of gratitude at 2:02, even if soon after their eyes become bitter (for the girl because she knows that she can't be friends with Mingyu anymore; for Wonwoo because he has to decide what to do with Mingyu). This is probably the last time Mingyu will see the girl due to unrequited feelings. Although Mingyu knows he's taken the best decision, it's bittersweet (his eyes at 2:15 really give this vibe). He's happy to make his friend (and the girl) happy but his dying inside. His choice was very difficult and at 2:06 you can see his look full of mixed emotions: sadness because he won't be with the girl but also because he'll loose two precious friends (Wonwoo and the woman), tiredness of always pretending to be fine and hiding his real emotions, defeat (he has lost to Wonwoo) and sense of loss (he doesn't know what it will be after this). His eyes seems to say "Goodbye" to the girl and maybe also to his friend. At the end of the song he questions himself: "Will our eyes ever meet each other?" (thinking of Wonwoo). But then in the last part he sings: "Don't want to let go so I let go", which sounds more like "i've already lost the girl, I don't want to loose you too". Here, he's referring to the fact that he won't ever confess his love to the girl (he lets go); as for the thing he doesn't want to let go, he's talking about the friendship between him and Wonwoo (which is the only thing that can be saved, but it all depends on Wonwoo). The last scene is the scene where Wonwoo has to decide. The possibilities are two: Wonwoo decides to stay friends with Mingyu, so you can see the final reunion of them as a way for Wonwoo to thank him for letting him stay with the girl, and to say "Even after this, nothing will change", or Wonwoo decides not to see Mingyu again (because he knows that he'd suffer from seeing him with the girl), and so you can see the last scene as a way to thank each other for everything and to say goodbye for the last time. The choice is up to you! Last but not the least, I'd like you to focus on the last scene, at the moment 2:35 where Mingyu is out in the rain looking at Wonwoo. At first his expression seems like he's going to cry, in fact at the beginning of the song he says: "I'm hiding in the rain always smiling" (so it's just rain on his face or also tears?). But you can see that after looking at Wonwoo he smiles again. And this smile is very different from the others, it's not fake, here Mingyu's smile is real, genuine because he has finally accepted his destiny and because he has seen how happy Wonwoo is with the girl. So, whether you think their friendship won't last or their friendship will continue even after this, the ending of the mv remains bittersweet: if you think they will stay friends, Mingyu won't totally be ok seeing the girl he loves with his best friend (and also the friendship with Wonwoo won't be the same as before); if you believe they won't be friends anymore, this is so bitter even if it's sweet at the same time because Mingyu and Wonwoo were both willing to choose their friendship over the girl (it's just Mingyu that decides for Wonwoo in the end, by returning the girl's hat back to him). No matter what final you prefer, there is no victory in choosing between friendship or love: the three of them will suffer anyway somehow. In any case I like to think that, in my interpretation, the friendship between Mingyu and Wonwoo is a great friendship. In the mv the feelings are so well shown: throughout the video you can see that Mingyu hardly smiles and when he does, he's just pretending. Wonwoo never smiles at the beginning but the more he stays with the girl, the more he starts smiling and laughing. Even though this is bittersweet, the mv end up with the both of them smiling genuinely and hugging each other. In the last scene, in fact, you can tell that they really love each other and, no matter how their story will end, they wont' hold a grudge towards each other. They both were willing to even suppress their feelings for the girl not to hurt each other.

My interpretation of the mv is both Mingyu and Wonwoo liked the girl and they both knew it. It shows in the mv how Wonwoo gave the hat that the girl wearing to Mingyu, as an indication that he'll give up his feelings for the sake of their friendship. But on the other hand, Mingyu was wearing the earbuds both Wonwoo and the girl wearing at the convenience store, as an indication that he'll do the same because their friendship is more important for them. My interpretation of the mv was: Mingyu likes the girl but the girl likes Wonu. But i think the hat was a metaphor of the girl's heart. When wonu gave the hat to gyu, it was like wonwoo saying that he's keeping his friendship w/ gyu and gyu can have his way with the girl w/o wonu interfering their relationship. But Mingyu, maybe he knows that it might complicate their friendship so they both let go of the girl that's why she's nowhere to found in the ending.

The woman and Mingyu were never together in one frame. Thus, she really did pick Wonwoo. Yet, Wonwoo tried to let her go symbolized by the hat. Mingyu was ready to let go giving back the hat. In the end, the colors red and blue are gone. A little hint of yellow or orange was left symbolizing their friendship. To answer Wonwoo, love becomes love when you're ready to give up what you cherish to make someone else happy.

My theory: The girl likes Mingyu and Mingyu likes her too. However, Wonwoo likes the girl too and Mingyu knows that. To Mingyu, his friendship with Wonwoo is more important than having the girl that's why he let him have her. The girl is Wonwoo's girlfriend only because she is trying to see if Mingyu is gonna confess if she was taken away by others. I think that's why when Wonwoo and the girl was in the convenience store, the girl looked sad and awkward and why when she was alone in the convenience store and Mingyu came in front, she smiled happily. I think that even though he didn't want to risk it, Mingyu was still hopeful that the girl will show her affection to him too even as a friend that's why he sticks around. However, in the end, I think Mingyu decided to let the girl go forever and Wonwoo did the same thing.

i have never come back to any music video this much before and i have been a carat for a long time but this particular song just does something to me, also, since every one is sharing their interpretation, i also want to do the same, for me it mostly feels like, they all have been friends for a really long time and the first line, "when did love become love", is like when did platonic love become romantic love and that line is so genius, and then it seems like, wonwoo is in love with the girl as he is shown running after her but thye girl is a free spirit and doesnt want a relationship but clearly has feeling for mingyu, who on the other hand seems to be running after wonwoo means he likes him and throughout the mv it seems like wonwoo is somewhat aware of mingyus feelings. in the end, when the raining scene happens it kiund of reminded me of spam france scene where one character goes out in rain and asks the other one to follow him and then they enter into a relationship and i loved that.

one of mingyu's line says "I'm hiding in the rain always smiling" that means he's hiding his tears by smiling under the rain. And in the last scene, Mingyu invites Wonwoo to stay with him under the rain. Wonwoo gladly accepts. So in the end it means, although they made up to save their friendship, they're both still hurt from the decision they made of letting of the girl. Which makes this story bittersweet indeed.

it's so beautiful that this mv can be interpreted in so many different ways and yet the ending still remains bittersweet! i know i'm late to this. didn't even get to read other theories. but i hope someone is still interested. would love to hear how did everyone else interpret it? *THEORY NO. 1* all of it is mingyu's pov the first chasing scene is symbolic. mingyu was chasing after wonwoo but then the girl came from nowhere and wonwoo started chasing after her. wonwooo was already out of mingyu's reach but after the girl came into picture, he seemed more far away. the girl wasn't interested in either of them romantically. she loved them both as friends. mingyu kept on smiling and pretending to enjoy in front of them even though he was hurting inside. then he distanced himself from both. wonwoo was so much infatuated with the girl that even though he missed mingyu and was worried about him, he still didn't actively go looking out for him, choosing to spend all his time with the girl instead. the girl must have missed all of them hanging out together and she must have felt that mingyu and wonwoo are drifting apart. the scene where mingyu is outside the bar. felt like she's urging mingyu to come inside to talk to wonwoo like 'go to talk to him. he's waiting' she is the one who returned wonwoo's hat because she didn't want to hurt mingyu after knowing about his feelings for wonwoo. or she didn't know about his feelings only had a hunch. or she ends up dying. wonwoo came back beside mingyu's side after the girl dies/turns him down. But it's bittersweet. for wonwoo because the girl isn't there anymore but atleast he still got his friend. and even more for mingyu because he gets wonwoo back but it's still bitter because he got him only as a friend and he knows that his feelings won't ever be reciprocated. but atleast it's still better than not having him at all. *THEORY NO. 2* both mingyu and wonwoo liked the girl, their common friend. *mingyu* either 1)felt like he doesn't stand a chance 2) purposely forfeited so wonwoo could be with her. he thought he'd be okay with it but it hurts to see them together so he distanced himself. pretends to be okay when they're all together when actually he's hurting. *wonwoo* either 1) knows that mingyu was interested in the girl as well and so initially he's in a dilemma but then he ends up being selfish and chose love over friendship 2) had no idea that gyu also liked the girl. is constantly wondering what happened to them. why gyu has stopped hanging out with them. misses him, is worried about him. but also doesn't actively do anything about it because he's busy being with the girl. *the girl* loved them both equally and only as friends. she either 1) ends up dying 2) rejects wonwoo when he confesses 3) leaves with another guy. the hat could either be 1) mingyu/wonwoo's hat that one of them might have gifted to the girl/or the girl could have taken it playfully 2) the girl's own hat *the alternate endings* could either be 1) the girl dies. they both decided to move on with their lives while cherishing memories of their time together and memories of her, the person they both loved as a friend and even more than a friend (indicated by both of them keeping her hat) bittersweet as they miss her but still have fond memories of her. 2) the girl rejects wonwoo. returns the hat given by wonwoo. wonwoo is heartbroken but atleast he still got his friend back. it's bittersweet because mingyu had given up his love so his friend could have it instead. but he didn't get it either. both of them didnt get the girl but they still have their bestfriend. 3) wonwoo couldn't remain selfish for long. he leaves the girl because he misses his best friend. friendship over love. still bittersweet.
