Incredible explanation of waveshaping. I've seen a few videos and read a few articles that amounted to "just experiment and see how it sounds", which is definitely a valid approach, but your explanation helped clear many things up. Thanks!

Wow, distortion, overdrive, rectify, analog warmth, fuzz, buzz are just gradations of saturation! Thank you, I thought what's the difference between saturation and distortion? Turns out it is the same thing! The difference is just how wave transforms, either harder or softer.
@Woochia3 ай бұрын
Yep! Though the difference between different overdrives for example may involve more subtle elements, like emulating the behaviour of some electronic components, the frequency response, ... But broadly speaking, it's all a matter of harder of softer wave transformations.

if you wanna cut peaks over zero very transparent way add waveshaper with 100%wet setting and leave the linear curve untouched. :)

Glad you like it. Check out my sound design playlist, there's kind of a part 2 for this at the end where I focus on "how" to use distortions instead of "what" is a distortion. Maybe you'll find it useful as well.

ty this really cleared things up for me, I've been using waveshaping for a long time and have a good understanding how its sounds but it is nice to really understand how it works and what actually happens

When you get to AM synthesis it dawned on me that a leslie speaker is a cross between AM and FM synthesis, obviously you can modulate the carrier wave much faster than os possible on a Leslie though.
@psionic1112 жыл бұрын
I keep coming back to this video, as I love how you lay out the foundations of waveshaping so clearly. My own explorations into WS are as a synthesis method for creating new timbres from simple sine or triangle inputs, rather than as a distortion tool. Hope you enjoy this crazy experiment I did about a year before your Sound Design Theory #6 was posted: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnu3iGqun6hrhac

1st and foremost - thanks so much for this entire series. Amazing work, and amazing generosity. Much appreciated. Also - I'm looking for an oscilloscope like the one used in this video, to further my learning. Would appreciate links, names, whatever. Again - Thanks!

@Woochia2 жыл бұрын
The one I use in this video is Veggie waveshaper but I don't know if the creator's website is still on. Melda production also have a free waveshaper in their free bundle of effects

Woochia could you please drop a link for the veggie waveshapper it's unavailable now :(

I had a link, it got removed. I'll try to put a new one but checkout malda production's free bundle. There should be a free waveshaper in there that is very similar.

I love the amount of information but the audio is so odd.. It's like it was sped up then pitched down or something.. I'd love if it were your natural voice.. May be easier to listen to
@Woochia Жыл бұрын
Weird as it is actually my voice. Maybe what makes it weird is the way it's edited, with every sentences put together without any breathing in between.
