I have been playing with my stock Yamaha lig for so many years. Brief history, I’ve had my alto student Yamaha saxophone since 1984. Studied for about a year then stopped. Started again 1.5 years ago. Always played with my stock lig, but just purchased a Vandoren leather ligature and it’s making a huge difference for me. I like how I feel using it and I’ve found the sound to be a little warmer. Perhaps it’s helping my embouchure. I don’t know, but it feels right.

I bought Kadama II's for clarinet, bass clarinet and baritone saxophone a couple of months ago after trying a friend's. No-one seems to have noticed that the wooden plate is asymmetrical and is set up with the wider side higher up on the reed. When you rotate the plate so that the narrow end is upwards, the results are startling. Colleagues have found the same when they have tried it....much more focus and projection plus better articulation, with the same fantastic rich warm colour. I've just ordered them for soprano, alto and tenor.

That final version (leather) did sound good. How does a leather ligature respond to changes in ambient temperature and humidity compared to a metal one? The scientist in me says the natural ligature should be more susceptible. Metal is more predictable.

Original: focused sound, lots of higher harmonics, bright sound picture. Works well on Selmers II and III, which have focused but bright sound. Classic: a bit more spread sound, a bit less higher harmonics and a bit more mids. It would work even better on saxophones like Reference, SBA, Keilwerths, 875 EX, etc. Kodama: more of an earthy quality, immediate presence, sound a bit 'rough' around the edges, but appeals in some music styles. It worked really well in this excerpt from Carmen - Habanera, which gave that Selmer a type of earthiness which the instrument can't usually deliver.

I always see clarinetists getting the original but I wonder how classic Ishimori would play on clarinet. To me this direct tightening screw seems more interesting. Also I think sounded better here on sax.

As for the question whether ligatures make any difference with synthetic reeds? Yes they do. A lot more differences!
