In this video I had some fun turning a passive speaker from a lump of cypress that was lying around.
I tested myself as I don't have a steady rest so this was on the limits that I felt comfortable turning but I am happy with the result. As always a nice learning curve to be had - what are your thoughts?
The finished used was once again Collombatti Naturals Linseed and Bees wax polish. Please note that I am not associated, endorsed or know them personally but just like the product!

Hi Stefan, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. This was a bit of cypress that was over 100yrs old and came down during a storm we had a couple of years back.

I've been thinking about turning a wooden horn, like a bugle, and putting a trombone mouthpiece on it. I know Vikings would make horns out of wood if they couldn't find an actual horn. The mouthpiece will ensure that it will at least sound decent. That's just what I've been thinking of, and this is halfway there, just turn another section that fits together to make it twice as long.

@@surfcoastwoodcraft Thanks. If you try it, a trombone mouthpiece is easier to use if you aren't a horn player. Compared to a trumpet. Oh, and I like the shape of your speaker. 👍

@surfcoastwoodcraft
@surfcoastwoodcraft Жыл бұрын
Hey Brad, thanks for the comment. Yeah I’m sure with some fine tuning it could be better…..I’m guessing changing the wall thickness and depth of the hole would change the sound somewhat…. 🤔 Maybe it’s time to re-visit it and see what I can do! 😀
@bradk7462
@bradk7462 Жыл бұрын
@@surfcoastwoodcraft Defo time! Of all the ones I've seen on KZbin, your one looks the best and sounds the best (from what I can tell!). Hadn't thought of wall thickness, but what about hardness of wood? There was a Japanese video that picked up on using super hard wood to reflect sound better, and the science is there in guitar making. So that might improve things. Depth of hole for sure! I'd guess there's an optimal point in depth, before it gets too large. And maybe whether the back is open or closed too. Just some ideas!
