THE CHUCK PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED, MY THANKS TO EVERYONE FROM THE US WHO OFFERED.
A returning client with another Art Deco request, this time a pair of Art Deco candlesticks to go along with the Art Deco bowl I turned for him a few years ago. This video is prototyping the candlesticks

Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Your safety is your responsibility as is the safety in your workshop. Enjoy the videos, hopefully something inspires you or helps you along the way. Irish woodturning is a craft that is dying out and should be preserved so that the tradition of Wood turning in Ireland stays alive and well.
Shay.

I generally like the stand. I agree with you about the base of the tapered stem. It needs to be a good bit narrower. I’m also thinking that the base could have been left at full diameter. Finally, the “beads” at the top look in the picture to be slightly tampered as you go down the 4. I think Art Deco is one of the hardest styles to turn. It is simplistic in design, but so difficult to get proportions correct so that the piece is aesthetically pleasing. Hope you’ll show the final product.

I agree totally Doug, something else I noticed is that the taper continues to the top under the embellishments, this is why we prototype, so things like this can be spotted before it gets into the clients hands. Shay.

I think you're right about the base, but also I wonder if the stem should be slightly thinner especially toward the base, more tapered is the phrase I'm looking for and maybe slightly longer. I think your'e brave turning it in that orientation. I do like it, might have a go myself - but not cross grained.

I have been looking at it all day and I think it is two things Mick. As you say the base is too thick which makes it look dumpy and the thing that was bugging me that I couldn't put my finger on is that the taper continues on under the embellishments at the top where I made it straight. Shay

Shay you have the look but I think it needs to be 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch thinner the whole length of the piece

Looks like the base is not wide enough for stability the bottom of the stem needs to be a lot thinner and the top decco bit is smaller than the base closer to the size of the candle .as you done it this piece will be top heavy only been turning for 2 yrs myself hope my oppion is helpful
@BBTurning

Some very valid points Christopher . I have tested the stability and it is grand. It can tilt almost 30 degrees before it goes. I turn a lot of lamps so how to calculate tilt is almost second nature to me at this stage lol. I think I have figured out what was bugging me other than the bottom being too wide. The taper continues to the top between the embellishments and I had it cut straight. Thanks for the input and for only turning two years you seem to have the right mindset of thinking outside the box, nicely done. Shay

Did you ever get the part?

I did David thank you. I contacted Teknatool and said that the pinion was not on their Aliexpress page (which is how they sell parts to the public) for Europe, they apologised and put it on within an hour of me sending the email so the pinions are now available in Europe. Shay

I would think narrower over all on the stem would work. For me the stem looks bulky and the base looks too thick. I would make it more delicate in appearance. Shay this is just my opinion
@BBTurning

And not a bod opinion at all Alan, I think the taper is too thick as well, when i get it correct I will be able to gauge the sizes of the other elements better. Shay

I think your issue is that the picture is showing a stick that is overall thinner than your piece. The top is likely much smaller
@BBTurning
@BBTurning 8 ай бұрын
I agree the taper is thinner Jon, and i think the problem with the top is that the taper follows all the way up under the embellishments and I made it straight which as you say makes it look too big. This is the reason I like to prototype stuff before I do the actual turning, you catch little details that you may miss looking at a photo. Shay

In my humble and I do mean humble opinion the whole stem and square bead embellishment is just too wide. If you look at your phot you have a very slender candle stick. Yours appears much more chunky. Hope that helps

I came to the same conclusion Ron, when I am turning the ones for the client they will be on the more slender side. Shay

Too chunky. Look at the 1927 movie Metropolis, focusing on where the bad guy uses electricity on the heroine. You will see "rings" of electricity that the candle stand can mimic.
@BBTurning
@BBTurning Ай бұрын
That what I came up with as well David, when i did the set for the client I halved the width of the rings and tapered the entire thing more. Shay
