I go through the process of turning a Staved or Segmented Goblet, using Amazique, Purple Heart and Acacia. Inspired by Bob Pritchard of Woodgoblets.com.

Hi Mike After watching this video I tried to turn a Staved Goblet..........and was successful to a degree. I call it a 'Stubblet'!! The original was taller but I had a catch and the 'cup' at the top went flying across the shed !! So I changed plans and made a smaller one. I need to improve my glueing up and finishing but I am really enjoying this new found hobby. Next is an Eccentric Goblet, pass the hard hat please!! Thanks for these videos Mike, they are very much appreciated. Reagards Ken

Beautiful Goblet! Great video and your shop was glowing like a jewel under power. Sanding is always required to blend on segmented works because of varriances in wood structure and texture. Fantastic video! I really liked your use of wax and burnishing at high speed and will have to try that myself. I have used a heat gun to dry the coats of OB friction polish, which seems to work well. I wear leather gloves so I can't scratch the wood with my nails, and the leather helps in burnishing too. I do make my goblets with a little different pattern, with a gradually thinning stem from the base up, and then narrowed near the top third of the stem, which gives a nice pattern from the outer wood pieces embedded into the stem and looking like inlay. When gluing the pieces together, I have been adding a small amount of black "non-sanded" grout to the wood glue, which turns the joints black, and which I think adds a lot of character to the goblet. Also, I started putting a very small amount of clear epoxy with micro iridescent sprinkles into the base of the cup, which lets the pattern show through but adds a twinkling effect. Some of the goblets I rotate to spread the epoxy all along the inside edges; others I have placed bits of bee's wax inside the cup to melt using a heat gun, and once melted, slowly turn the goblet at around 250 rpm on the lathe (with heat source removed) until it dries as a thin clear inside layer. Finally, I like to print out a small "Handmade By" octagon on paper, with the date completed and types of wood used, then epoxy it (with a THIN layer of clear epoxy) to the concave bottom of the goblet after staining. The normally white printing paper turns nearly clear in the epoxy, with the printed words appearing to be floating, and the underlying wood pattern shows up nicely as the background.

Well, what can I say? Mike's video inspired me to give it a go. I'm fairly new to turning but had some scrap wood and a band saw. The result? Not bad but not good enough!! What did i learn? It'll be obvious to most of you. The accuracy with which I made the staves and glued up just wasn't good enough. The turning was the relatively easy bit! So I called that a prototype, learnt from my mistakes and made another. Couldn't get the band saw quite accurate enough so did some old fashioned planing to make sure all the staves were equally square. The result? Happy bunny! Thanks Mike for showing the way.

Hi Ray, I am so pleased that this video inspired you to turn your own staved goblet. They are great fun to turn, and they are also a good skill builder. Take care, and thanks for your support too. Cheers Mike

Good to see you back again Mike. Nice project to think about what woods I can use as we are not able to source the ones you mentioned, here in Thailand. I know that any contrasting wood will work but the purple heart really sets it off. Thanks, Chris
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you Chris, as you say, any contrasting species will give the desired effect. Just try to get their density similar, as if on is much softer it will be difficult to maintain uniformity, especially when sanding, as the softer wood will tend to reduce quicker. Hope I explained that part OK :) Take care Mike

I wouldn't have lost that bet Mike! The Goblet King is back! - Not the also kind of famous Goblin King, David Bowie, I said Goblet. Your first project with the new power supply had to be nothing else than a goblet! I love the idea of stacking up the wood to get thicker blanks and with your choice of wood this piece turned into a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing this experiment with us. I think the electricians did run an extra cable to you, seems like you gained power as well. Greetings from Good Old Germany Peter
