The round disks that are left over from using the hole saw or wing cutter are called round tuits. They are very valuable. When you have a friend who needs to do something, they'll say something along the lines of "I'll do that when I get a round tuit." So you can give them one of your round tuits, and they can get the job done.

Thanks for the informative video. I just bought a new drill press today and I am still assembling it. I am building an end table and I am using dowels. This machine will make the holes perfectly.

I learned about the drill press 60 years ago in wood shop. I had forgotten many of the setups here, so it was a nice refresher. I would only add that he needs safety glasses as some wood throws splinters and a mask would help not breathing in the wood dust. In creating the video I understand why he did not have those as it would be difficult to talk and show the setups.

I have watched it for the 2nd time in one month's time. And learnt few things. I have a task to cut a 2" hole on a board and was wondering how I would do it. I got excellent ideas here. Thanks.

The wing cutter might be exactly what I need. What size wing cutter did you use? I need something to replace the 2” forester bit. I’m making circles but not holes in the wood.

I have read, recently, that using a hand drill as mini drum sander is unkind to the bearings because of the lateral pressure. makes sense to me. As a fan of bandsaws and mid power drill presses, do you have any comment about using presses as a substitute for a drum saw..especially one which oscillates in operation.

This press has worked like a charm for my projects kzbin.infoUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

Hi. Do you think that a 1/4 hp drill press is strong enough to cutting 4 inches circles with a hole saw on a 1/2 inch board. Thanks in advance.
@neville132bbk
@neville132bbk 3 жыл бұрын
1hp==746W....so a 250w machine might, I Think, be pushing it a bit. 4inches is 100mm.....and I've never tried using holes saws that wide---I'd set a wing cutter at 50mm from the centre so it cuts 100mm diameter. And I'm used to machines of over 500W, so that's 2/3 hp.

Is a drill press even really necessary? between a plunge router and cordless drill which most woodworkers already own you should be able to do anything a drill press can and then some. what am I missing here?

Hard for me to believe that you could get the same trueness with a corded drill, I think the drill press excels at getting perfectly vertical holes. They aren't a huge investment, either, under $300 dollars, space in the shop might be an issue though.

Five years ago I bought the cheapest one Wen makes - I think it was $59 - and used it to make all the holes with a 35 mm forstner bit for the euro cup hinges when I built new shaker style cabinet doors for my kitchen. I tried freehanding the first one but there was no way I could hold the drill steady enough to drill the nice neat cups for the hidden hinges. With the drill press it was a piece of cake.
