The shooting board is a great tool for working on small thin stock. it is commonly used for moldings and other detailed designs.

I just made my first sticking board a few months ago. Never really thought I needed one, but boy was I wrong. I use it for so much more than moldings. Any joinery down long boards, or cutting grooves for drawer bottoms. It works for so much!

After drilling the fence piece and before gluing in the dowels, the fence piece could be used as a template to locate the holes in the base. Line it up parallel to the edge of the base, clamp in place and insert the auger through the fence to drill the base. This should assure that all the base holes line up perfectly with the dowels in the fence.

This was a sticky subject to cover but you did it very well. Thanks for sharing this.

A tip for anyone making this or something similar. You can use the fence as a giant doweling jig for drilling the holes in the base before you clue the dowels to the fence

I'd not heard of sticking boards before, but it is exactly what I need for those little parts. I'll be making one of these very soon for sure. As always, thanks for the information and guidance. Best wishes. :)

I think chisel usage especially for carving out grooves and such is the only place in life where it is appropriate to tell someone to practice their stabbing motion.

I kinda like it too! First time seeing something like this, and seeing the benefits already. Very cool and thanks for sharing.

I have needed one of these for some time now -- small and fairly thin pieces of scrub oak that need to be flattened and are all but impossible to clamp!

I'd worry about hitting the metal end stops with the plane iron, but maybe I'm just to careless. My sticking board just uses 1"x1" wood blocks that jam into some holes for end stops and I have hit the wooden end stops on several occasions.

If you set The height correctly. You'll never have a problem with it. However, if you don't set the height you may hit it with a plan. But in that case it's really not an issue as it's aluminum. I've actually planned aluminum and brass a few times before.

I would love to have a couple of hollows and rounds to cut my own profiles. Theyre not available here so I'd have to buy them from England, sight unseen........ I am weary of buyin a wooden plane without bein able to inspect it first. The last woody rebate plane I bought arrived bowed ...... I could have nearly cut around a corner with it 😂🤣 My wagon vise is fairly close to the edge of my bench, so I havent yet found a part that I cant bead or groove...... but I'm sure il find that part someday 😂 then I will make a sticking board, I might jus use screws as forward stops tho 🤙 Thanks James 😁

Nice work! Simple and slick, extremely useful. I will have to give up the crude temporary hacks I have been using and make me a proper sticking board. (but what do I do with the case of double sided tape I thought I'd need...)

Great project, thanks. I am thinking of using a raise-able hardwood fence instead of the stops. Don't like having the metal stops digging into end grain of workpiece. WDYT?

I'm not a fan of hand tools due to the damage I have done to myself over the years trying to use many of them. The only ones I can use with any proficiency are a hammer and surprisingly, chisels. I am better with power tools. However, I still very much enjoy watching your videos and look forward to the next. Greetings from Guyana, South America.

So you wanted to make one of these for a while but never got around to making a sticking board? What would you say was the sticking point for why you didn't get to it until now?

Hi James, how sticky thin can you make the fence? For planing delicate pieces 1/4 or 1/8 ?
@WoodByWrightHowTo

you can make it as thin as you want. I have a planning stop that is just over 1/8

I was watching this video this morning and was inspired to write you a brief suggestion that I think would enhance/improve your video production quality. Having watched your videos on KZbin for a couple of years has really been very key to acquiring and improving my existing hand tool woodworking skills. I’m certain many people could make the same assertion, you are an accomplished craftsman and educator; you do not need to entice your viewers by hiding the exhibition, final product, or method until the end of the video. Its a mistake I have observed many if not most people making on KZbin. I’m suggesting you incorporate a video synopsis at the beginning of you video showing what you are making looks lie or how you are using equipment to perform an action. While some “craftsman” probably do need to keep viewers in the dark about the final questionable product or service until the end of the video in order to get full viewing, using a synopsis, in your case, would most likely increase viewership. If people have an idea of what you are working towards, it would probably pique their interest more, not less. Its rather annoying to observe you making something, not know what it is, only to have the video end without any idea of what you are actually doing; I personally really need that preview to maintain any interest in finishing the video. Additionally, the introduction of a video synopsis would relieve you of having to generate a gratuitous and or sometimes awkward introduction to the program. To be sure I am not singling you out for this problem, I see it all the time. Its just that in your case I like watching your program; just think this suggestion might help improve your process. Keep up the good work, I enjoy watching you create; sense that I’m learning important and valuable lessons as I watch. I even appreciate the “parent” humor you lavish us with.

I used to do that but I got a lot of hate for it as people just want me to get into the project. Though that was back before I split into two different videos for easy watching and teaching. It might be worth looking to add it back into the teaching video.

Nice job! Note that those are planing stops. A planing stop limits the horizontal movement of a board, while a depth stop limits the downward movement of a cutter..

The best sticking board I've seen, and the one I modelled mine after, has a 45 degree edge as well as a 90 degree. This is very nice when using your hollows and rounds. You can see this board in action here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5u4daWFqK2Ka5Y

those are great for a lot of moldings but not as useful for grooves and rabbits. and that is the more common use. but it would be good to have one of each. always good to have more tools!

No a rhasp file tears out material, and plane cuts it, not the same at all. Making the rail holes before the slotted holes they fit inside... not as good as making them in reverse, becuase you can over cut the dowel holes, fit the board into them, and shim the dowels into place and glue them using saw dust and wood glue to fill the gap for a perfect fit. Making a jig for perfect three holes so you can repeat the operation perfectly more than once is best- I make short work of that on my radial arm saw, and my router and my drill press, but then, I don't need a "sticking board" because I have a radial arm saw, router and drill press?
