I'm 75 years old and have a cabin up in the mt's of Wyoming county penna. Game lands 57 boarder my property. there is many foodplots in my area and love to see and heard the woodcocks in the spring and fall but in the pass 15 years not seeing many at all like I use too. one thing stop the hunting of them also the grouse is disappearing too.

Been having tons of woodcock around woodward at our CREP farm. Working with Lysle Sherwin often. Y'all might know him. Love to see these unique birds around. Steady increase over the last few years.

I live in northern wi. Last 2 years has seen a huge boom in woodcock populations. Send 40 in the last 2 days

Hunting seasons are not really the issue here. The real issue is the declines we are seeing with all ground nesting birds, quail, pheasant, whipoorwills, grouse etc., that have been heavily impacted by the explosion of predators and furbearers that happened when animal activists attacked trapping and devalued the fur markets, and poor forest management that favors an old growth forest over cutting mature trees to create successional growth.

And I just got one right off the elevator off a plaza into the subway, broken, flat eye, frontal lobe broken, wind broken, bleeding off inside the beak and eye. Seems shocked or without pain, and of course no sizable insects to feed it save perhaps roaches or lanternflies. Hope it will survive the night, I may try a harness to let it feed at the plaza, because released it will be splat by a car no doubt. :/

Most likely Fire ants and coyotes, predators that just arrived here in the south.could be the cause for the decline would need to do a study to find out.

Hi Halfacre! Thanks for watching! Actually, coyotes are generalists when it comes to their diet so it is highly unlikely that they are causing a 1% decline in the woodcock population.

Raccoons are killing turkeys by eating the eggs. Assume maybe same with woodcock? we need more coon hunters to balance? Or accept nature takes its path and thing gone extinct for ever with out human interference....

I COMPLETELY concur with some of the previous comments.....STOP hunting them! This speaks SO clearly of the ridiculous influence hunting groups have over wildlife management. That a bird scarcely larger than a Starling or a Robin is a game bird at all should inform any mind that this is about the thrill of the kill, and not about the eating. And, of course the Coyote is referenced as a major contributor to it's steady decline......though studies have demonstrated repeatedly that Coyotes actually benefit ground nesting birds by reducing Possums, Skunks, Raccoons and other smaller predators. Naturally the first step in slowing their decline should be to place them under protection.

First, skepticism as to the very existence of any studies that might indicate the presence of Coyotes is directly/indirectly of benefit to ground nesting birds, and then an assurance that, if they do, they're "fake science." And so why would I even bother to post links.....it would appear your uninformed mind is already made up.
