Mr. J Paul Fennell grew up in Massachusetts, on the Atlantic coast of Boston. His earliest memories of woodworking as a young boy were the smell of wood and playing with scraps of wood in his father's workshop.
After graduating from university, he became an engineer with the Apollo Space Program in California. His first contact with woodturning was through a woodworking course at a local Adult Education program in the 1970s where he was drawn to the lathe.
The video tells us how he became a turner, initially self-taught, then how he learnt from others, how his turning styles have changed, and how he has focused on the expressiveness of hollow forms decorated with Chinese patterns. He is still an active artist, passionate about his art and ready to try new things.
J Paul Fennell is now an international demonstrator and wood artist, living in Scottsdale, USA

Loved this, its a shame it doesn't have more views, I think it could influence and inspire lots of young and not so young woodworkers.

Always admired Fennell's work through books and magazines. Seems like a really down to earth guy whose progression as an artist reminds me of my own experiences. Excellent piece.

I’d love to know how he did some of those goblets with the wood spiraling around the stem. Very intriguing! I’m an artist and I think he’d be a great mentor!
