How to Make Wooden Drawer Slides.
My favorite drawer slides have been out of stock and back-ordered for weeks. So instead of using lower quality and finicky drawer slides, I have decided to make my own. Wooden drawer slides have been used in furniture for 100s of years. In fact, many of the antique furniture pieces in my own home use wooden drawer slides that still function well after 80, 90 or even 100 years (And those years involve a lot of kids!)
So I'm making the switch from impossible to get imported drawer slides to making my own.

Nice. And there's something enjoyable about the simplicity of it, vs metal slides. But as you said, that requires a very high degree of precision to pull off.

I personally liked the way you explained the process and why you used wooden runners. Good call mate. Good workmanship also. Thanks for taking the time to show everything clearly.

This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble kzbin.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!

Good timing. I built several frameless cabinets 6 ' H x 3 ' W with fully adjustable shelves. I find I have the variable spacing between shelves where I need it but the 18" depth is making it a bit difficult to get to things in the back of the shelf . I have been contemplating making each shelf a slide out drawer to alleviate that problem. Since I have seven to nine shelves in each cabinet the cost of slides is quite high. So I thought of using wood runners to save a bunch of money. You have given me some good ideas in how to make the conversion to wooden runner drawers. Thanks and keep making great videos. P.S. embrace your children. Pick them up, make them part of your video if they are in the shop with you. Nothing wrong with that. She may be one of our next great female woodworking innovators with a little help. A number of makers involve their children in some fashion if they are in the shop during filming. Just part of Life. Love them while you have them. They grow up and start their own lives soon enough.

A lot of wooden runner drawers have extended sides longer than the depth of the actual drawer and a stop mechanism attached to the side. The extended sides are to eliminate or reduce tipping when fully extended. A thought also is to use iron-on melamine to the bottom and sides of the runners or drawer sides. Melamine tape is hard and makes opening and closing drawers easier. Thanks for the video...

Damn, that's a lot of work you just created for yourself. Did you think of just adding a dato cut right down the center sides of the drawer box and sliding Beachwood runners through that cut and be done with it? Just asking for a friend.. 😁

Hi, what I do is cut the sides the same size as the opening end plane them to size when fitting just before glueing. Also a good way of minimising the tipping when the drawer is open is to cut the back between the sides and fix it an inch or so forward of the length of the sides of then to get to the back of the drawer your not pulling it all the way out. The best advice I can give is find some plans from the 40s or 50s and use that as a guide for all your drawers. I only use hardware on fitted kitchens as that's what customers expect but for my furniture it's an unnecessary expense . Take care?

The drawers should not be squared but slightly tapered in the back. In the front 16th" play all around and don't forget to add a kicker, the kicker will help stop the drawer from kicking down.

Let us know if the fit gets tighter after you clearcoat the cabinet and the drawers. Also if you built the back of the drawer higher than the opening by little, when that stop the drive from coming out and you can still tilt it a little bit to put the drawer in? Just a thought.
@DaileyWoodworks
@DaileyWoodworks 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they did get slightly tighter. I have since switched to solid wood drawers with dominos. I now intentionally build them snug then use a hand plane to find tune the fit, and then use Rubio Monocoat finish as it’s an oil that doesn’t build up like a varnish

If I achieved the piston fit of craftsmen Of old that would be an issue. But there is enough play for that to be a non-issue with the 1/16 gap on all four sides

"The egregious mismanagement of the federal government" has...what? Conspired to deprive all of us of...cabinet hardware? Really? Maybe if private companies payed their workers more, and did not rely on "on-time" supply-side economics...Oh, I'm sorry, too much of economic theory, let's stick to cabinet making, shall we?

@ mak4374 Globalist oligarchs have made puppets of our govts and have deliberately sabotaged American manufacturing and our economy. But let's keep to making cabinets.
@mak4374
@mak4374 2 жыл бұрын
@@wholegrain27 I would say that "globalism", as in "global economies", has always been beneficial to humanity, propagating peaceful transactions, stable governments, etc. The problem of course has been the inverse goals between the locally-attained-power of the politicians/kings, the ever-expanding global markets/routes and their need for stability, and the need of vulture capitalism to dominate both of the above. And not to mention, those politicians who do want to do something to mitigate the excesses of the above players, and to resolve the dichotomy of the systems involved, are always hampered by being too late to catch up, and by their own constituents who elect them on hope, but bring them down on fear instilled by the powerful and the rich. Once upon a time I hoped social media who expand our minds. And in many ways of course it has - realizing the beauty and artistry of...let's say, Japanese woodworkers, instills another level of respect and admiration in me of their culture, and as such pushes me not to fear that my own culture will be lost, but enriched by "globalism". But politically and economically uniting nations, I do not fear that, because it is intrinsically good. It is just that social media has been used by oligarchs to convince so many of us that...woodworkers "there" are responsible for the degradation of the woodworkers "here". I know, seems like a silly example, but...think about it...
