This song holds a personal meaning to me. The lyrics talk about how you're in a bad situation, a situation you're trapped in and desperately trying to escape, and that your only option is to keep running. One day you'll get out, one day you'll breathe fresh air without fear, and you'll leave whatever's chasing you behind. But for now, you just run. For now, you just have to survive. As someone who has experienced trauma, this song hits hard in that perspective. You'll make it, for now all you have to do is survive.

The subversion of the idea of the monsters being the one chasing the boy, to them actually being the ones to help him along the way, is one of my favorite things ever. I keep coming back to this video to watch that moment where the first "monster" picks the boy up off the ground and carries him to keep the boy going on his path. It's SUCH an epic shot! Not to mention the other monsters arming the boy with a sword and helmet to protect himself along the way makes me kind of emotional as well. I always thought this video was about how in our lives, the things that may initially seem like obstacles or things that are holding us back, are actually the aspects of our lives that shape us and make us who we are. Those are the things that got us to where we are now, keep us pushing forward, and will remain with us wherever we want to go.

To add to this: This song was featured on an extremely popular world-wide documentary film called Kony 2012. It sparked a worldwide manhunt for Joseph Kony, and ending the practice of child soldiers. Kony was a warlord in the nation of Uganda. Uganda managed to send a team to the Little League World Series as the very first team from Africa in 2015. (I'm from Williamsport, PA. This was one of my favorite moments I've very witnessed.) When those Uganda kids took the field for the very first time (they didn't even own shoes, and played all summer long in bare feet, they were so poor!) Everyone. All 50,000 people attending that game, including the opposing side (Dominican Republic players and fans alike) were all on their feet. Lamade Stadium can be a loud place. Latin American and Caribbeam teams are typically the loudest and most rambunctious fans. When those dirt poor Uganda kids who managed to escape the worst violence in a poor and violent country, decked out in brand new clothes (and shoes!) for the first time thanks to worldwide donations.....that entire place was ROCKIN'! The only thing missing, would have been if this song was playing over the loud speakers at the time. Also, there is a movie with the same name; Run Boy Run; about a Jewish boy who managed to escape a Nazi concentration camp and hid out for 3 years in Poland. S0 yeah. This video is POWERFUL!

I once read that the lead singer said that he wants everyone who listens to his music to feel like a hero. This song perfectly encapsulates that feeling for me. It makes me feel like I could run through hell itself without getting burned!
It's a damn crime that this video did not win a Grammy. It's beautifully shot and can have more than one interpretation. I always saw this video as the boy trying to run to a better place, and the beasts that you at first think are there to harm him actually help the kid. They seem to show that help from others will come from the most unexpected group of people.

Jumping over the mountains, running along powerlines, rising from the ground, flipping over lakes and rivers like they're nothing. Thank you Woodkid for portraying the childhood transition of a fantasy world boy to the adult urban world in such an imaginative, wonderful and emotionally precise way! The ones of us guys who do not realise the importance of ruling our own 'monsters' are ruled by them for the rest of a miserable life! I have seen this videoclip a dozen times and it is always meaningful!
@nerdkartoffl90193 ай бұрын
How can you missinterpret it SO bad?! Thats such an superficial observation. It's a journey, where the boy flees from the adult urban world, gets help from "nature/earth spirits" (i guess metaphor for likeminded people) to fight the broken system and world. He gathers more forces and power and raises his sword against the urban world in the end. We all are "the boy" and we are either "staying in society" or runing. But this will not change anything. Unless we raise our "swords" or we will pay a price. Whatever it will be. PS: He literally sings, "Break out from society" and "disappear in the trees".
@wbonfa3 ай бұрын
