I love the overall sentiment of this video; having fun with photography and playing around with subjects. This is the foundation of creativity; the difference between art and design. Great advice and encouragement on shooting local. Gardens and landscaped areas tend to have a greater proportion and density of "attractive" plants than natural areas, making them highly productive shooting environments. One of my favorite all time photos I shot of the landscaping in the parking lot around my house 20 feet from my front door.

It's definitely not necessary to go far to create landscape photographs. I do it in Paris. And yeah, I sometimes go to the forests in the suburbs but even at the heart of the city, I can find landscape(-ish) photographs to make. Loved your close, almost abstract shots in this video. Thanks for another great watch!

That shot of the gnarly tree branches is my favorite. It reminds my of deer antlers on a hunters wall !! Lol. I have that very same Nikon 16-35 lens and it is by far my favorite. I use it whenever I can. Fantastic video Michael. Can’t wait for the next one..

I've grown to enjoy the unique nature woodlands more and more. While I still love grand vistas, I save those for when the conditions are perfect. Which means that I spend most days inside the woods, living in a rural area means that the forest is my "botanical garden". Like yesterday when I was hiking for 7 hours inside the woods, just looking, being observant of what was around me and I was rewarded with a few good compositions!

I love your videos and your photography Michael. The fact that you get excited about a photo and then when you bring it up in Lightroom you are disappointed is really appreciated. Been there and glad you shared that. I feel stuck in a rut shooting sunset shots because that seems to be what people like but I’m getting bored with it, not that they’re not beautiful, they are, just interested in shooting other things. I do look around me when out but you’ve inspired me to really look and shoot. Thank you and please keep these wonderful videos coming.

You seriously make it too hard to pick a favorite, because your photos are generally all so good. What I really really appreciate is the whole conversation you hold in every video, your style and your curiosity is a winner. I personally have found that short of traveling to shoot in fabulous places, that, as you point out, there is so much to explore beneath your feet, above your head, close up, distant, and that has been my approach for a long time, and have found it infinitely challenging and rewarding. Thanks again Michael, I DO really LOVE your videos.

Love the real close up of the aloe plant with the spikes on the leaves. Your suggestion to look up and down is a good one. Since I don't have the means to travel (even before COVID), I take pictures locally. And because my location isn't exactly what one would necessarily call "photogenic" (in some instances), I tend to focus on macrophotography. That being said, while I absolutely love your close up shots, I am drawn to that foggy shot of the concentric tree limbs. I am a little distracted by the empty space in the lower right corner, but it's still a good shot. I really like the abstract shots of all of the tree branches/limbs you shot.

Wise words regarding landscape photography, sometimes it's good not to have epic sunrise or sunset shots, etc. I believe this helps us to create something minimalistic composition, be more creative and embrace our local community more. Really calm approach to the art form - really nice work Michael. My favourite images are the close up, almost abstract images. I love how you find great images (and sometimes some that are not so great... But you share that process, too!) just walking around your own neighborhood. I live in the City as well, on Russian Hill, and I have taken this same approach to try to capture images close to home. Even in a place less scenic that San Francisco this is possible. It is only necessary to open the mind to different ideas of what makes an interesting photograph. Thanks for sharing your very local photo expeditions.
@MichaelShainblum3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Kevin, really glad you enjoyed the images and the process. Agreed, I think that's the big point I wanted to hit with this video. It certainty can be a little tougher to create interesting images in places that are not "epic or dramatic" but its definitely possible and really rewarding, regardless of where someone lives.

The foggy tree is by far the best, it's really nice ( i think the rest is okay but nothing special). in my opinion foggy days and rainy days in SF are great to get moody pics that are different enough. sometimes you can also get above the clouds to make pretty cool pics, specially when the fog is basically a scattered, low cloud (well i guess thats what fog is anyway right :) I'td be interesting to redo the pic with a subject, to see how that turns out. maybe a 1984 like teenager with a bmx or something, going into the fog. or with an old porta pro set of headphones sitting on the tree.

Great video, thanks for the inspiration Michael. Really made me think to try to shoot more of the local stuff. I live in a rather large city too (Prague), so not easy to find landscape opportunities per se, but anything is possible if you focus on details. @MichaelShainblum3 жыл бұрын
Its tough to be honest. I do not go into the main parts of the city often with my main camera gear, unless I am with more people. I feel a bit safer on the coast to have my all gear out. If I am in the main parts of the city taking photos I will bring as little gear as possible in more of a hiking/day pack instead of a camera bag. Unfortunately SF has been getting a bit sketchy for city photography.

I went to take pictures of the Milky Way last night at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse, but came back thoroughly disappointed. Too foggy and the lighthouse kept flashing the light.
