Hey Derek, Amen on the food. Priding myself on going as long as neede without food, at the end of the day when you lay down, if that stomach is rumbling even some jerky and water is much appreciated. I was fortunate enough to learn practical skills from my great grandfather and I see that practicality in the things you teach now. Thank you for your time and all that you do my friend.

I like how you don't just follow the status quo on priorities, etc. Your knowledge, experience, and use of common sense allows you to do this. My staple skills include getting the staples out of my back from last week's surgery, unfortunately forcing me to take it easy for the next 2 months. Just when the weather up here is getting nice. Great to see another video from you Derek and look forward to many others!

Good to see you back on camera, I made my first order from your store, turn around was excellent for snail mail. Yes I still use the Post Office, more we use the internet, more we add to the unemployment. Sorry, enough about that, I'm a big fan of your videos and now a big fan of your store.

Sarge, many years ago, before the "survival" craze started, we were taught that a good hunter will eat good some of the time, but a good trapper will eat good all of the time. I was raised around the east Texas woods, and I believe that what I was taught was fact. Trapping also extends to the water also. I have come home many times without catching a fish on a hook, but am always able to trap all of the minnows and crawdads I could use or eat on that same fishing outing.

Good discussion ! One thing I noticed from Dave's advanced classes is that you have to think and do all tasks seemingly at the same time. Fire, water, shelter, food. Or how one task is dependent on another. Can't boil your water without fire..... primitive skills are a great thing to know

Hey Sarge Love the vids Brother been doing Survival for a long time and base my school on the rule of 3's and 6 survival priorities the thing your missing on the 3 minutes without air is when someone has drowned a lot of schools I give start out in a canoe and from watching Your vids and vids with Dave I think you do some canoe stuff as well. If something happened then you have taught everyone the critical 3 minutes to get air to your brain! Thanks Brother Sarge God Bless and Keep On Keep'in On!

Well said and I feel Mr. Ron Hood would have approved. When I watched Mr. hoods Video when he explained the rule of threes I took away from that is to look for what dangers are imminent and what are not. Me personally I get like one of those snicker commercials when my hunger rolls around. One thing I took away from Ron Hood was how to make a figure 4 dead fall. Plus I love my ATAX and Buck Hoodlum both are designed by the late great Ron Hood. I am going to enjoy these staple skill videos. Even though as I am practicing them , as I work to perfect my food procurement practice in the distance I shall hear. " Honey ; clean up dinners almost ready!" so I will have to take my leave of my backyard adventure to procure some edibles in my dining room.

I was taught there are 4 survival skills and list them in order of importance: 1. Shelter 2. Water 3. Fire 4. Food. Under each of these categories everything else can be listed and will make your life more "comfortable and keep you healthy". I do like your videos and I do find you fun to learn from. Seems the more I learn, the more I WANT to know. Thanks for being here on you tube and for your hard work in making these videos.

Good one Sarge. I look at survival like a bank account. The more you take out without putting back, the faster you start bouncing checks :) Excellent points on how your situation dictates the order of your priorities. Nothing will deteriorate your morale or mental state like a lack of food. When people are nervous, they want to eat more so then that problem compounds itself. To prevent that, the ability to identify plants and forage may be just enough to buy you time to get other priorities set

...it goes a long way in teaching one what they can and/or cannot do and they'll never know until they've been through it. Your body will acclimate itself to whatever situation you're in IF you take stock in your situational awareness and set your mind on a POA. Once you do that and begin to execute that plan, you're good...

I agree totally Sarge, Those 6 points are what keeps you alive during a survival situation. Food can be high up on that list due too your moral in a survival situation, You may have everything at your disposal, water, shelter, fire, but if your psycholgical goes down, and you get thinking man are they going to find me? that right there can and will put you in a world of hurt. Food can help you not to think like that. I try to carry a bit of food with me in my kit just to keep moral up. Good vid.

I believe that "AIR" is included in the rule of 3's because you forget or disregard it at your own peril, example: we had 3 snowboarders lost in a white-out between Mt. Thredo and Mt. Kosciusko, they built a snow cave/shelter to escape the weather, they forgot or disregarded the rule of 3's relating to "AIR" and their bodies were discovered about 2 1/2 months later when the snow started to thaw, they had all suffocated because no one kept the air/ventilation-hole open!

Breath is simply a panic vs. calm state. If you are in a stress/fear inducing situation one of the first things you loose is your ability to control your breathing (ie hyperventalation or breath holding). In the military we use a term coined combat breathing in these situations. Combat breathing is nothing original it is the same technique used in anxiety attacks. Slow, deep, controlled breaths will bring back mental focus, lower heart rate, and bring breathing back under control.

I agree 100% with everything you said bro, but I group hunting and traping together and make my 3rd foraging. so my list gos #1 foraging/herbalism (because you can do it well doing everything else anywhere you are) #2 (depends on where you are and what you have with you but normaly) hunting/traping because traps are easy to make no matter what gear you have with you and are aways working for you. #3 Fishing(can be #2 if you have gear and area to fish) it can cross over into trapping with no gear

Great video bro The thing that gets me about food,.. it can be SO cheap and light weight to carry. There are lots of things out there that will provide a meal.. even just tossing in 5-6 packs of ramen and a bag of jerky. You won't be eating like a king..but it's better than going to sleep hungry. I'll never understand the poor attitude about eating in the woods. Thanks for the video

I agree importance depends on the situation, most folks I see tend to be in cooler climates up north. Shelter is important if the weather is going to kill you, but where I am located days get to 105 or so, nights are in the 80's and you can easily sleep in the open, only rain can get you cold here.. Around here water tends to pop to #1 when it's 105 with humidity and you are sweating buckets. I don't think I could last 3 days here without water with any kind of exertion. Food is next for me here. Then I can think about hygiene/first aid and shelter etc. I have been without food for about three weeks, it isn't something you want to endure, it put me down for the count and took quite a while to recover from.

Situation always dictates level of importance, but it's equally important to have all these skills. No one survives weeks without water. No one functions for three weeks without food. You can live three weeks without food, but you won't be able to actually function nearly that long. You're a very unusual person if you can function after four to five days without food. It may fall under hunting, but gathering is often the easiest way to find food. Nuts contain a tremendous amount of calories per pound, and chances are there are edible plants all around you at every time of year, if you just know what they are.

Having food in a desperate/dangerous/new situation is a big advantage. not necessarily for those who can mentally process the idea that food might not be available for a couple of days. But if you're stuck somewhere accompanied by a small child, and/or animals, their behavior becomes impredictable. Dogs will wonder for days in search of mice or other small game and they will not sit around you if they're hungry unless you imobilize them. just my 2 cents from own experiences. good vid.

What some people fail to realize when it comes to being able to live for about 3 weeks without food is that after about 7 days you'll be so weak that your ability to get food will be a lot harder. After 2 weeks you'll be so weak you'll be sleeping most of the day without any strength or mental ability to do much of anything else. That's why finding food the 1st week is important so you can at least maintain a functional survival activity level.

If you think about it, the first rule of three is important. When ever you wear a life vest or insist that your son wears one you are respecting the three minute without oxygen rule. Now that high altitude passenger flight is common you should plan for cabin decompression and remember to put the oxygen mask over your face FIRST before assisting your wife or child. Having a member of your party trapped in an avalanche would be another instance. Securing gates around a pool is another good example.

Foraging is also very SEASONAL, and may not be plentiful in an area for everyone. NOT to mention it takes a lot of practice and research to become VERY CONFIDENT to identify proper edible plants. Thats why i left it out of this video.....will be doing a seperate video on the topic...but it is surely important to know

Excellent! I agree, most people including myself would be hard pressed to go more than a day without food or some type of food, as far as the rule of 3's, breathing is a no brainer. But as for 3wks without food, maybe, but if your not used to it, your body is going to start shutting down looong before that...especially if your not in tip top shape, sadly, again, including myself, how many of us truely are? Especially if thrown unexpectedly into a survival situation.

I think the first skills in any situation should be planning (locations , weather and time appreciation), navigation (routes in and out , base camp), kit lists (preparation, maintenance, packing order and location), supplies (list, preparation, requirements) transport, permission for land use, restrictions (fire regs, water sources, fishing and hunting) advise friends and relatives of location and timings (ETD home ETA transport drop off, ETA Basecamp) and you haven't even left home. 80% Prep.

Having gone through the "no food" for days and "no water" for days and having to trek for miles and miles without the proper nutrition while E&Eing from 2 legged predators and sleeping in 20 degree nights with nothing but the clother on my back, I went through the gamut of emotions and had my mental state stretched to it's reasoning capacity. But, the human body can conform to limited food intake IF (I repeat "IF") the mind is conditioned ahead of time. Everyone should experience that....
