Hey Ben, just track down a diecast version, they are out there! The snow globe is cool... On a side note, the ice might have worked if it had been placed inside the pressure pot, all the way around the mold, but I doubt it, there is a huge thermal reaction there...
@douglascampbell9809
@douglascampbell9809 4 жыл бұрын
The only way to get around this is using metal. The resin curing is a chemical reaction that creates the heat as it happens so it's point of origin is inside your mold.

I wonder if doing a small pour around just the plastic figure, then encasing this entire thing in a larger pour would be effective. Every time I've tried casting natural things, I get tiny air bubbles around them... support said to coat the object in a dip coat, let it harden, and then do the casting. No bubbles since; this is where my idea came from. IMO, it'd be better than doing multiple staged pours as your seam would be totally encapsulated rather than having the edges exposed. Having the seam encapsulated would probably make it less visible and also less prone to delamination.

Ben, you might feel like it’s a disaster, but to me it’s an artist discovering the best way to refine their process. Remember what the philosopher Ross said: “There are no mistakes, just happy little accidents.” I love the snow globe look and am partial to greens and blues. I wonder if electroplating the plastic model would prevent warping? Can’t wait for the next project!
@mkdrivingzone
@mkdrivingzone 4 жыл бұрын
Some makers who do multiple pours don't use a pressure pot. They use the heat gun to pop the bubbles, wait until the resin is tacky and then do the next pour. A die cast model may help also. But, there's nothing wrong with a unique piece of work like this. What makes it special. Good on you for not giving up on it and also the "pot cam" is a brilliant innovation.

You should have put the ice inside the pressure pot, making a bath for the resin container. Add some salt and water to the ice to increase the heat transmission capacity. It would probably preclude pot-cam, but it should help with your heat warp problems.
@HenkJanBakker
@HenkJanBakker 4 жыл бұрын
The problem with heat is that it needs to get somewhere. Having a cold bucket is nice but if the heat can't travel to it it's pretty much useless. The compressed air is a great insulator. You need the ice on the inside of your pressure vat or a conductor to get the heat out. Maybe even both? It will be hard to film but at least it will be colder in the spot where it matters. The concept with the integrated base is very very nice.

There are still a lot of great things about how this turned out! I love the bit of epoxy on the stand. It looks really cool how the wood and epoxy intersect with the shape. I also love the solar color change! And you freehanded an awesome sphere. Plus, you tried something new with the ice bath, and learned something. If you’d never tried it it would still probably be bugging you. I enjoyed this video!

Hi Ben, love the channel mate and the artistry. I have an idea for your next project. You should make a "lava lamp". My idea would be to shape a lava lamp shape. Make it from all resin and to achieve the "lava" look, use the died resin shavings in the fluro colours. But don't go shy on them, pump them in there. Also add the clear resin shavings. Then, wire it up with a blue light/UV light in the bottom. Based on the previous time you tried with the shavings and you shone it with the UV light, it should look sweet!

One idea could be to model the tie fighter as a crashed under the sea vehicle and that way if the resin warps the parts, it just adds to the overall look of the vehicle's destruction. You could also maybe incorporate some alien sea life around it, glow in the dark jelly fish for e.g. Good luck on the next build Ben!

Long winded - but hear me out. Put the epoxy in the bottom 1/4 of the container - let harden. Next put dark tinted resin in, but tilt the container way back, so it only coats the "back drop" of the display". Then, finally, using clear epoxy and lots of sparkles, fill the rest of the container. Should give it a "in space look" without being dark and murky in front of the tie. Hope that makes sense! Love these projects.

the globe base came out really good looking, that alone looks fantastic. If you ever revisit and you know it'll melt you can add some white/ yellow to to bottom and burn marks to the side, give it the appearance of it burning on its way back into the atmosphere. That still would be difficult to pull off though.

2 things you could do. 1. Get a super slow hardener for your epoxy, it doesn't get as hot. 2. Put the ice in the pressure pot so the ice is in direct contact but I still think the ice will melt before it's effective, unless you put in the pressure pot long enough to remove bubbles then take it out and keep in an ice bath till it goes hard.

I definitely like the globe look, especially since you were able to keep some of the resin in the base. I'm sure you will get a good esult eventually. Just keep at it. Evan and Kaitlyn have a shirt that highlights that. It says "Make Fail Make Fail Make".

Great stuff Ben! Love these figure projects, so many scenes can be created. As for the figures warping would lightly coating the figure in resin before putting it in a large pour protect it? Would love to see a large scale scene in the shape of a dome, so a flat base and domed top. Maybe reds and silvers, something dark and Sith-like.

Not your fault... clearly that craft has passed through some time/space distortion field and warped its very structure! Brilliant turning tho, love the snow globe base too!

A globe. I really like the look of the bubbles while it was in the pot. It looked like the Tie Fighter was flying through fog. I know this probably looked different in person but if there was a way to recreate 'fog' in a globe to make it look as if it is flying in fog. Or flying through a cloud. Like the color changing base too.

I'm sorry it overheated again, but I love your determination and the fact that you'll put your near perfect pieces on air! It is interesting that the wings look uniformly misshapen though. Since you're asking for our opinion, I like this globe look for the next one. I prefer the darker color shifting colors, and think the glitter looks great for space ships and things. Oh, and also I'm a Star Trek fan!!! (If I got to choose one, over the other). Thanks, Ben What about putting ice in the pot?

Personally, I'm a big fan of galaxy-esque nightscape so purples and blues with sparkly resin, but definitely an egg. You do a lot of stuff with the model flying over the landscape, but maybe try standing the burl along the side of the container so it looks like the model is flying past a meteorite? Just a thought, love the work and looking forward to the next one.

Great job, Ben! The fighter's wings look battle damaged... it works. 👍 As a kid in the early eighties I had a small metal C3PO keychain. It had articulated arms and legs, too. Unfortunately, I lost it over the years. I'd love to see you try C3PO and R2D2 in a sandy environment on a light burl, like ash or chestnut. Getting a bit more creative, why not try adding a homemade Tusken Raider sandman, maybe some worn out canvas and tube-like lollipop sticks might work. I'm not sure how well it would keep it's shape in the curing resin. 🤔
