I love the box Jarrod. Might try this one myself. The texturing and the beauty of the wood make this pop. Nice job !!

Great bowl - the overall design, the lid, and especially the texture for that touch of class ! Wet sanding also keeps down the dust a lot.
@Woodturnersjournal5 жыл бұрын
MPart Yeah. I realized I forgot to mention it cuts back on dust along with helping your sandpaper not ware out as fast. I will need to bring it up next video.

Hi Jerrod, Lovely looking lidded box. Why did you glue the Sycamore onto the lid instead of turning it separately as one slip or catch could have ruined the lid. Cheers, Huw
@Woodturnersjournal5 жыл бұрын
Huw Davies If I did the handle separate, I would not of been able to do the under side of the lid with handle poking through. I agree about the catch. I was worried about that. I was really gentle when I turned it.

With wood being hard to get there why did you not use a smaller piece of wood for the finial for the lid ? Also why not use saw dust or fine shavings from the path to lady cracks ? Just curious. Good looking box good job.
@EdTheMole5 жыл бұрын
Dam auto correct. Patch the cracks.

I originally had a different idea for the handle, then changed my mind. It really was a piece of scrap wood though.

Great job Jerrod! How do you ''puree'' the coffee grounds?
@Woodturnersjournal5 жыл бұрын
Jim Daughtridge I take old coffee grounds, which I let dry out. Then I put some of them in a Vitamix. You can use a blender or a coffee grinder that pulses. Don't over fill it or it will cake together and you won't get a good puree.

I enjoy learning from you. I, too, have a Jet lathe. Help Please! I'm new at turning and have a slow learning curve but keep trying. Recently my piece got loose from the face plate. Now I can't unscrew the face plate from the lathe. Any suggestions?
@Woodturnersjournal5 жыл бұрын
rjpeters40 Use acetone. Put something under the piece so it doesn't drip all over lathe and keep applying. It will dissolve the glue but affect your piece. That's what I would do.

Huge piece of wood for a knob
@Woodturnersjournal5 жыл бұрын
I agree. Originally I had a different idea for the knob, but changed my mind. I also needed it big enough to act like a tenon in order to do the underside of the lid.

Jerrod: My name is Joe Hansen and I live in Calif. I would like to know if it is feasable to use a chattering tool on face grain or side grain. Someone told me it can only be used on end grain is this accurate. Thank You and Keep up the great work. Joe in Calif.
@Woodturnersjournal4 жыл бұрын
glor854 Hey Joe. Unfortunately, that is true. You only use a chattering tool in end. Face gain is not rigid enough and you will end up getting really bad tear out. You also want to use close grain woods to get a better result.
@turntbyhi-lo35165 жыл бұрын
Jerrod, I'm not sure that is sycamore. Unless the sycamore trees out west are different from what we have in the mid-west. All of it I've ever seen, the bark is much smoother and lighter in color. Still, a beautiful piece of wood though. Thumbs up.
@Woodturnersjournal5 жыл бұрын
turnt by Hi-Lo Thank you. I am assuming it's sycamore because it was given to me by somebody who told me it was. It's also a common tree out here, so I believed it. You may be right though. Thanks all the same.

Why do you drill all the way the lid for handle? No criticism, just interested, I never drill all the way through.
@Woodturnersjournal5 жыл бұрын
L Parker It was really just a design choice. I've done other lids where I did not, but I actually wanted to see the handle on the under side of the lid. So really just to do something different.

On the bearings or on the actual blade? And what does it do?
@billy194615 жыл бұрын
Woodturners Journal On the bearings. It lubricants the bearing and makes them last longer.
@harrymellor55925 жыл бұрын
Nice looking project but what a waste of wood making that handle. You could have got 4 out of that piece of wood. Sorry.....
@Woodturnersjournal5 жыл бұрын
Harry Mellor I agree, but it actually was a scrap piece I had lying around and I initially was going to design it differently. I changed my mind because it did not fit the piece.
