In this video I am turning a Lidded Box with some thread chasing
The Lid is threaded into the Box.
I use Birch for the body of the Box. The Lid is Walnut, and the Handle (knob) is Sycamore.
The Walnut is stabilised with Cactus Juice.
The finish used:
Hampshire Sheen High Gloss Wax.
The total hight of the Box is 11 cm and diameter is 9.5 cm.
I hope you like this video.

What is the process to stabilize the walnut?

Any experience where you learn shouldn't be considered a fail in my way of thinking. It's still a great box and I feel like I might try thread chasing some time as well. I do also agree that a tooth brush is a valuable tool in the Turners toolbox!

You are right. Experience should always be valued. The failure is maybe more in that I did not succeed in finishing the piece properly. Thanks for watching. Appreciated.

Hi. I have Thread Chasers from Hamlet Crafttools, England. Size of thread 18 tpi. (tooth pr. Inch) and from Carter and Son Toolworks, USA. Size, 16 tpi. 16 tpi are easier to use since the teeth are bigger. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching.

Yes, it can be frustrating to loose a piece when almost finished but that is one of the exciting things about turning wood. You never know what you get in the end.

I wouldn't call it a failure. I'd call it experience. It's a very pretty box -- well done.

It failed in the sense that I was not able to finish the piece as I planned but one always learns something from failures. Thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciated.

Great work Sigurdur, the cracks are just character emphasising spots 🤪 I am unsure, but, did anyone see the angry octopus (side of the pice) at 12:10? Keep on turning. Cheers, Bluey 👍

Hi Bluey. Thanks. You are right. The cracks just add character. You are to kind. Hopefully, I can take some learning experience from this. But you know. Next time different wood, different problems. I do now see the evil eye of the octopus. Well spotted. Thank you for watching. Appreciated.

Did you glue the walnut insert into the box for the looks or were you afraid that the threads wouldn't take in the birch?
@SAr-Woodturning
@SAr-Woodturning 3 жыл бұрын
Before I started this, I tried if I was able to thread the Birch. Without success. The threads just crumbled. That is why I used stabilised Walnut. It is not ideal but takes a decent thread. Second benefit is the nice contrast to the light coloured Birch.

I've got Sorby chasing tools - I've never been able to thread anything. Nice job!

Hi David. The speed of the laith is important. Should preferably be 300-350 rpm. The material is also important. Some woods do not take threads well. For ex. the Birch in this box. The threads just crumbled. I have chasing tools with 20 tpi and 16 tpi. I don’t have much experience with this but my feeling is that the finer the tooth the better wood (to take threads) you need to thread successfully. Thank you for watching. Appreciated.
