I couldn't find these in Australia Don, and it's not economical to get them from the US because of the postage. But, I went to the local plumbing suppliers and I got a 3" brass fittings. All I had to do was turn the hexagonal part off them and I had exactly the same as shown here. Cost me around $15 I think.

I just found your channel. This is beautiful and well done. I'm planning on making one for my sister for when it's time for her to go home. I'm really liking the segmented look. What angle are you cutting your pieces? Are there any plans for this or similar? Anything you can tell me helps. This will be my first project. P.S. I subscribed to see more of your work!
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Nicole. I use a software program called WoodturnerPro to help me with angles and to create my "cut list." If you provide me your email, which you can send to danlivingston@comcast.net, I can email to you that cut list, which basically provides the math, angles, etc. Take care.

A gorgeous piece of work. Oddly though, I felt incredibly sad while you were making it. Do you find that your moods reflect what you are making? Has anyone asked you to make a uniquely shaped urn? If it’s ok to ask, that is?
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft5 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynda, thank you. I'm sorry you felt sad. I didn't intend to do that. Yes, I have a relationship with a local funeral home. But, I'm not sure, if I knew the person, if I could make the urn; you know, for a friend or family member. Just not sure about that.
@lyndacarter50905 жыл бұрын
Dan Livingston Makes not to worry, I guess I just keyed into the mortality of it and the ones left behind. Your art moves people, right? So, you were successful! One doesn’t control one’s emotions, but how one acts on them. Again, a very nice piece.

Is it easier to turn and finish a segmented item like this since you are cutting with the grain of the wood rather than against it? I am a wood working novice so please excuse me if this is a dumb question.
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, thanks for watching. That's a good question. Actually, I don't think that I've really ever given it any consideration. I've done hundreds of vessels, both whole-form and segmented, and I've never really noticed one being easier than the other. I have learned, however, that you never really want to use a roughing gouge on segmented turnings. It's just too much to ask from that tool. A well-sharpened 5/8" bowl gouge is far better, in my humble opinion, for roughing segmented.

I would love to try to make things like that but I can't figure out the angles out to make the cuts not smart enough I guess

Ken, you can do this! It's not really difficult. The Woodturner Pro software is very helpful.

Hi Dan,awesome work, I read in another post that this urn is around 200 cu inches,is that true? I have to build one for a 225 lb man and was wondering if this size would work.
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, the funeral home in my area tells me that you need 1 cubic inch for every pound of weight. So, for 225 lbs, you have to go up to 225 cubic inches. Yes, this urn was 200.
