I love the vase. I will have to say though, that's one vase that should have plenty of frequent flier miles. Seriously, I've watched 37 of your videos the last 2 days & learned something in all of them. Please, keep up the good turning!

I like the vase. You did a good job. What I liked most is the fly overs. It happens to most of us. You are one of the few turners I know who would show this. It lets all us know that things happen. Thanks for the video.

+Terrence Powell Thanks Terrence! I show mistakes and fly overs since, like you stated, they happen, and it's a part of the work process, dealing with the unexpected, understanding why it happened, and making sure to change our methods to try and avoid it in the future, or else it's not a learning experience! :)

Great work my friend. I would normally throw this kind of piece of wood in the fire. Now I will select the next piece like this and give it a try. Scared the crap out of me when it came off twice but amazed that it was able to be rescued. Well done and great challenge.

GiddyUp Hiluxury Thank you sir! It was scary for me too when it did jump off the lathe, twice, and the only reason I wasn't caught by surprise is that in each of the cases I was waiting for it to happen, parting too close to the chuck, I was expecting to cut all the way through, I didn't really think I had space left, and I saw the bad angel I was coming at and was also expecting a catch as I was touching wood. And I am pleased as well at how durable this wood proved to be, it helped this is a fresh cut off, if it was dry it would have exploded, or so I imagine.

And trust me, if you have good hands, and if yoy have a good eye, which you must have to become interested in something like woodturning, then with a little practice you'll get there, I'm by no means special or over talented, just dedicated, love what I do, and practice practice practice! :) Wish you all the best. Brams shed Thanks Brams (or is that your last name, you're Mr. Brams?), the only reason you don't see me jump like a scared mouse when that happened is that I saw where my cut was going, but it was too late to stop my hand, so I went into the cut expecting a catch, and it came to be, and I was all zen about it... ;)

Hi my friend! I always enjoy a lot your videos, it was refreshing seeing the piece fly through your workshop a couple of times, after all, being a three winged vase what did you expect it to do? to crawl? No, seriously, sometimes one is in the middle of a project and something like that happens and you get down, but I admire that you recovered both times quite well, learning from the experiences and all the better for them! Congrats! Also, I can appreciate that your surgical skills keep improving, nice repairs there too! In Spanish we say: Genial! which means, well Genius I guess! Cheers! Daniel PD. As you can see, my absence was not only from uploading but also watching material, it is like missing several chapters of your favorite series and then get them all on the weekend! Enjoying myself my friend! Cheers again! Daniel

Hi Yuval! I enjoyed the final result - it is indeed a beautiful vase, presenting the beauty of the olive wood and the crotch piece. You should try a "baladi" olive sometime... One word of advice, if I may (I'm nut sure what you actually did, but it is good practice generally) - when chucking spindle work, especially greenwood - compression is always preferable to expansion! That is, unless you have plenty of wood for support. Plus, tighten the chuck every now and then - even more often when you turn non-contiguous work such as this. Cheers! Yuval
@yuvallahav9 жыл бұрын
Yuval Eitan Thanks Yuval! My wood pile is pretty much composed from what I can get at my local fire wood vendor (mostly Holm Oak and Eucalyptus) and some other stuff the neighbors drag in (or I do, like with the olive I got from a field in front of my house after a wind storm...), so I don't when I'll have the chance to get some "baladi" olive. Advice is always wanted, and I agree with yours, compression is better, but I didn't want to wrestle the mounting so I could create a mortise, using my drill press with a Forstner bit was much simpler, did I mention I'm lazy? :) I guess that is also why I didn't tighten the chuck every once in a while, didn't want to split my wood in half (good thing I found that excuse, aah?).

Wow, so much to say on this. Firstly if I had seen that blank I would have chopped the wings off and ended up with a small box or something. For that I have to thank you as people like you give us these great ideas to think further. You describe it as a simple vase, yes maybe simple in looks but the work it took you was far from simple. Lastly I think that you must be so pleased on not getting a third throw off the chuck, twice I think you pushed your luck very far with very little damage. A third time could have meant a total write off. You may not be overly happy compared to others you see but at the first time must be so proud of producing the finished item. W|ell done!
@yuvallahav8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Paul!! In fact, this piece flew off the lathe 3 times!! but only 2 happend while I was filming :) And the third one wasn't very impressive anyway :) But I've learned a lot from this piece, both on ways to look for new forms in wood and in how to handle tools better, so I'm very content with this piece for that! :) Yuval.

Be proud of the piece Yuval it is lovely. I must say that a few times I thought to myself oh he's going to lose it and sure enough off it went. It must be that I have a sixth sense now as I have lost a few piece off the chuck also. I have been using a face plate a lot and leaving extra then parting off. Be safe my friend Mark
@yuvallahav9 жыл бұрын
MARK Baid Maybe not sixth sense, but more of a good experience? :) if the piece would have been large enough to use a face plate, I would have, but I don't have one that small... probably get one, shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

Where you showed the spot of bark you fixed is right on the edge of what some call an "oyster" (the wee thin wafer of end grain. What really surprised me about this it that that oyster stayed in place through three uncommanded departures from controlled flight and subsequent hard landings on the floor. The piece, as well as the video, is a thing of beauty. I rarely go for "inny" mounts (expanding jaws). Especially where there's a thinnish wall. against which to expand. One is afraid to tighten the chuck, lest the piece break in half. If I go inside like that, I'll generally make it an inny-outy, so I I can squeeze the jaws. Barring that possibility, some CA dribbled in the recess (this also applies to worm screws - I watched that other video before this one) stiffens the fibers. OR, two-sided tape around the jaws to give more grip, if you insist on expanding into a recess that's too weak for a good crank on the chuck. This, however, might sometimes cause a little lateral movement that I wouldn't worry about with tools that are as sharp as yours. Mine lose their edge without my noticing until I've literally pushed so hard as to push the piece right out of the chuck. I need to sharpen my tools more often. Probably things you already know. But, there it is.
@yuvallahav9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Wilson Yeah Mark, I'm not a huge fan of expending grips, especially like you said, in pieces that are thin, when I do use it, I try to leave as much as I can around the mortise so it won't split apart, always a scary thought, but sometimes, because of miscalculated shape or form, I just have to do it that way, also, I'm trying to think of a unique way of "signing" my work, and I've been thinking of making a segmented tube with my "signature" "Y" in the center of it, that I could size and split a medallion off and put into all those mortises I'm using, for an easy and unique finish to that part of the piece... Thanks for the ideas about how to strengthen the fibers, I never thought about doing anything about it, so thanks for that idea, I just hope I remember it next time I'll be doing something of the sort (it's a working process making a new idea into a habit). You should sharpen your tools more, it's a task, I know, I don't like doing it also, but a sharp tool is a safe tool, for exactly that reason, you use less force with a sharp tool, so less change something will get pushed a way by a doll blade... or so I've heard :) And yeah, that piece survived that turning, flying off and all, just fine, just think of me closing my eyes each time I picked it off the floor, feeling to see if everything is still there... Olive is one tough mother... !

homesy135 I will try and see what I can get next time I'm with the kids in the toy shop, should I have a similar piece again, I will try to shape it like an egg as much as I can, I am a fan after all :)
@homesy1359 жыл бұрын
yuval lahav Before you made the comment that the vase looked like the egg capsule from Alien, I was thinking there should have been a small curve (like a round-over) or a small bevel on the base to lift the vase from the table top. What do you think?
@yuvallahav9 жыл бұрын
I think it's a good idea, and I should have put more into the base and it's design, but since this was a test piece, and I really didn't think it will survive, I made it as simple as possible. I also didn't think about the sanding problem with a shape like this, and so I spent 4 hours sanding this by hand through the grits, good thing I have a TV in my shop...
@yuvallahav9 жыл бұрын
I think that will make it look more like the egg, but it's not a bad notion, I will do something more decorative on my next try with this kind of vase, and should I have a piece that will also have the 'egg' like petals, I'm sure to turn it round to make the alien 'egg' complete :)
