Woodturning an Oak Burl and Epoxy Resin Candle Holder

Woodturning an oak burl and epoxy resin candle holder was my third epoxy resin project. I'm still not sold on woodturning with epoxy resin. The jury is still out on selling wood turned epoxy resin art. I'm wondering why wood turners watch woodturning with epoxy resin videos. I'm going to have to explore more artistic woodturning embellishment with epoxy resin. This was an easy epoxy resin woodturning project.

what do you thin the mylands with? DNA?

@Paul Gargulak Mylands is a lacquer base finish so I use Klean-Strip Lacquer Thinner. Works great.

Held my breath when you put the sanding arm inside the piece. I would have used a sanding stick (sandpaper around paint stick) for safer smoothing. But it did not break, so ....... Good job!

Yea me too. It was scary, but I just bought it and wanted to try it out. That's usually how I screw things up.

Roger Dale Scott had one for years, but bought the one from Woodturner Wonders. Theirs has adjustable angle and reaches deeper. Not cheap, but well made and more functional. No more breath holding on skinny vases, etc.

Very nice! Curious, acetone is nasty stuff. Why not denatured alcohol?

@dtork47 I use DA when cleaning all my stuff before putting on Dewaxed shellac as a sanding sealer (which is made with DA). Using DA after this will melt the shellac sanding sealer, a little, and make it tacky till it dries again. So... I use Acetone which does not melt the shellac and dries very quickly. Does a great job of cleaning off the resin sanding dust and residue.

@@rogerdalescott Interesting using the acetone for cleaning after the shellac/DA for a sealer has been knocked down. I am just getting ready to make my own shellac sealer with DA and was going with 1lb cut. Does this make sense to you? I might have to try the acetone as a follow up to the shellac, thanks and stay safe.

@@dicktorkildson9752 I mix my first shellac flakes with DA at a 1lb cut. Then I cut that solution 33% 1lb cut with 66% DA as my sanding sealer. I like it to soak in fast and dry fast. I only use this if I am going to finish with something other than several coats of a 1lb cut of shellac. Examples: oils, lacquer, waxes and polishes. Everything sticks to dewaxed shellac and it sticks to anything.
