Woodturning - Ash Log to Bowl

During covid, I found myself with lots of free time and decided to pursue a form of wood working that I was always interested in; woodturning. After about a year or so I've created well over 50 pieces and have started to develop an aesthetic in my work. I intend to make more videos of my woodturning with time, and I look forward to sharing them!

Hi Shane. Love this. I'm hoping to get back to my lathe in the next month or so, and I also turn mostly Ash. It always frustrates me when I don't know what finish KZbinrs use. What did you use for this bowl?

Hey pal - that’s great! Ha ha, I’ll make sure to start putting this info in future video! I mainly use Tried and True finish. It’s a mixture of linseed oil and beeswax. Hope that helps!

I have been given several pieces of white ash approximately 9" in diameter. I tried to turn a bowl after about 6 month of drying and all I got for my effort was a cracked bowl. How long did the log dry before emptying to turn this bow?

Hey Bob! Perhaps try going a little thinner on the thickness of the bowl next time and let it dry in a cooler place. This piece was from a dead standing Green Ash tree so it's hard to gauge how dry it actually was. That said, I work mainly with green wood and its defiantly worth letting it dry out slowly once its turned. Hope that helps!
