Well done, a very nice bowl and a great work. It is very interesting, as you hold the gauge at the back end, because you must save your Hands to the flying, dangerous wings of your bowl. I imagine it to be very difficult, to hold the control about the gauge. It looks like a little bit of a japanese woodturning, only that this woodturners the tool placed very far back. Thank you for showing, and excuse my bad englisch. Many Greatings from northern Germany, please stay care and healthy.
@MartinWoodhead4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it! 😊 All the control is in the right hand, the left hand only adds weight to the tool.

That grain is fantastic. On a side note, I see the bed of your lathe appears to be above your waste, is that a comfort thing? Mine was much lower so I mounted blocks on the legs to raise it a bit but its still lower than yours. Can one get a more accurate cut from having the lathe raised higher?
@MartinWoodhead4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! 😊 The general rule of thumb is that the spindle centre should be at your elbow height!

Per usual, fluid and smart workflow with an outstanding result! All ready for Valentine's day. A question: Your left hand well back from the tool rest, the way you learned or do you find it advantageous and if the latter, how so?
@MartinWoodhead4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! 😊 The left hand only adds weight to the tool. All the control is with the right hand.

Would it be possible to counter that initial holding jig with tyre weights or something similar to equalize the balance?

Yes, of course, you can use whatever you like to add balance! 😊

Question, I'm a retired engineering centre lathe turner, why do all you woodturners feel the need to grip the Jacobs chuck when you're drilling a hole..?? Are the morse tapers in the tailstocks substandard on a wood lathe..?? I've pushed 3 inch diameter drills through steel from the tailstock and wouldn't dare grip the drill for fear of losing my fingers, just asking... superb job by the way...
@MartinWoodhead4 жыл бұрын
That's a very good question Allen. I can't speak for anyone else but if I don't hold the chuck it will spin. Maybe we should be asking the lathe manufacturers why! Thanks for watching! 😊
