I thoroughly enjoy your work. This piece is outstanding. I've long been a fan of box elder. The spalting is such a nice bonus. I would love to find some flame box elder burl. Think about that for a minute. Also, I have to comment on your kiln. The fact that you up cycled an old refrigerator is awesome! I have built a couple of food dehydrators the same way. I also built a seed sprouting box(not from a refrigerator) to start all my garden vegetable seed each year. It works great. I call it The Contraption. Let's face it, equipment and such is just too expensive. All it takes is a little thought and ingenuity. Okay, I'm done rambling on. Please keep up the fine work and take care

4th like, Todd. I love that bowl. You mentioned ‘flame’. I’ve just used a stain called flame on the outside of a bowl. At least my granddaughter liked it 🌞

Rule #1 dry your wood before turning it. That way you don't have to worry about it cracking after you turn it. Rule #2 remove all the bark so it doesn't rot off later.
@perrys59543 ай бұрын
I am still learning so take my comment for what it's worth. It's been my experience (limited as it may be) that turning green wood is much more of a pleasant experience than dry wood (easier to cut.. less dust...) Also, isn't a 'twice-turned' bowl much faster overall since removing all that material will really speed up the drying time and make the drying more even since end-grain area dries faster than cross-grain and thick stuff much much slower... I can't recall the statistic but something like natural drying is 1" per year or something. So a rough turned bowl drying in a kiln in like a week or two is a greatly sped up process :p I recently excitedly got a hold of what looks to be flame box elder and am daunted at the possibility of having to wait many months/years to dry it.. just my humble thoughts/reaction to your comment but genuinely please feel free to correct me where I am wrong! :)

Gorgeous! I don't think I've ever seen this wood grain before, and was really surprised at how colorful it was. I really enjoyed watching those colors being revealed as you applied the finishes. I also like that you leave a little "touch" of the outer tree layer in the piece - that adds interest, and I'm glad you mentioned it.

What part of the country did this log come from ? I have access to western US Box Elder but I've never seen this type. Stunning !
@outinthesticks1035 Жыл бұрын
I think it's not so much the part of the country, as it is the growing conditions. The red is a fungus infection, the black lines are same but a different fungus . Red is in living wood, black is on the edge of dead wood where it's starting to decompose. I think it's much more common in damp locations. I have cut trees on stream banks that all had the red pattern and trees from field shelter belts that had none . The red will turn grey with time , I've seen comments from people who have tried lots of ways to keep it but nothing worked . I have found that one side of the black lines will be very soft and tear out and uneven sanding is a problem. I have a lot cut and stored , just waiting till I can afford a vacuum stabilizing system
