I used to balance rotors, which is sort of similar to using a wood lathe. How do you get the log onto the lathe so the weight is balanced when you start? Does it have to be very precise, or the machine will hold the log well enough until the wood has been rough-cut into a cylinder?

You missed the 4th red wood, the Western Red Cedar. They are very similar to the Giant Redwood in colour as well as size, construction properties and insect repelling nature.
